Forrest Gump (1994) Reaction!

Comments

And then the ending part, not quite the same, but I met my daughter for the first time when she was 15 and a week after she went home she was sent to live with me. I was not prepared for that at all. Springing he has a kid on him like that was really shit, I at least knew. But she'd sorted herself out and still hadn't let him know until she knew she was sick. I have a lot of empathy for both of them really, but more for Gump because he doesn't really realise how badly he's been treated. And I've never been called by name or dad. Just never named. I get why, but it doesn't stop it hurting

The running part, I always felt it was implied that he didn't quite understand the reason he did it. Sometimes you can do things for emotional reasons you've not yet dealt with or accepted. It's very clear he was running away from missing Jenny, not to mention the trainers (sneakers/running shoes she'd given him). So it was a way of escapism but also remaining attached, just in a more simplistic manner than most people try to escape. Like her for example, her sleeping a lot when she first arrived, that's a very clear allusion to heroin withdrawal I would assume, but he didn't realise that. It really is a testament to the fact you can be good to people without understanding though.

Too much of this film reminds me of my past and people I've known. The bridge scene reminded me of a 16 year old neighbour I knew when I was 12 (I'd known her several years at that point). The whole throw back to them praying, her father was a very strict religious man. She overdosed and drowned herself in a lagoon when she was 16, after giving away quite a few of her things. I always felt I should've seen it coming.

That era sadly isn't behind us either. Might not always manifest in the same behaviours these days, but I've seen no less dysfunctional behaviour from people with traumatic pasts in my lifetime. Only have to look at myself for that matter.

I agree with you Duron, I was also first mad at Jenny but just like you said she did have terrible things happen to her when she was young and all she knew to do when she did see the same behavior is to runaway and who can blame her, but she did always love Forrest.

Josip Buretić

No matter how many times I have watch Forrest Gump it hits me every time. I love this movie so much and your reaction was everything I wanted it to be.

Josip Buretic

It wasn't until I was older that I understood Jenny. There are a lot of people that hate the character Jenny. I believe she's misunderstood... She had traumatic things done to her at such a young age, with no way to process it but run away and self medicated, in an era where therapy was deemed for people deemed "Crazy". Stuff like that didn't affect me when I was younger, but life has a way of opening your eyes and heart. She acknowledged it in a way towards the end of the movie...

Duron Ball

Captain Phillips is good too.

Victatchewan

that was such a good one!

A little easter egg in this movie is when Lt Dan says if Gump is a captain then hes an astronaut and then tells him about his legs made from the space shuttle metal, those lines are there because Tom Hanks and the Lt Dan actor Gary sinise were in the movie Apollo 13 that released like the year after this movie, another great one to check out maybe. Also the feather is a representation of the line at the end by forest saying maybe destiny is accidental like being caught in a breeze.

Christian

Along with this one, "Philadelphia" is the other best actor Oscar win for Tom Hanks, and he earned high praise for "Cast Away' and "The Green Mile". I also loved him in "Apollo 13". You guys made soooo many great points today. And I have to say, Tony has the most perfect voice for this. Who else agrees with me?

Jim Schmitz

Heck, just hearing the opening melody with the feather gets me going.

Jim Schmitz

Agreed, she was definitely self aware even throughout all the drugs and psychological pain. She killed that role.

I remember when I first saw this in the theater, I was annoyed with Jenny (like I see a lot of new reactors also), but on subsequent viewings, I understood her more and just felt very sad about her story. She really loved Forrest, but her whole life felt there was something wrong with her and that she would put that taint on him and that she wasn't deserving of real love which is why she jumped from abusive guys and situations 'cause she felt that's all she deserved.

Thadman

I think it was more time and getting herself together, and becoming a mother, was more what got her to that mindspace. I think the illness may have been a part of her mindset (because how could it not), but I feel like she'd been slowly moving to that point where she could really understand herself and not be ruled by the trauma of her childhood.

Thadman

One of the most beautiful movies

Gio Bellisario

I love this movie and Tom Hanks has made so many great films. Big is another one that is high on the list.

DC

Forrest son sees dead people. If you want another real tearjerker. I am Sam is one of the best

Flexorcist

Glad to see you got your 'Gump' up...

I was actually crediting the kid for being the inspiration for the way Hanks chose to play the role. Not taking a thing away from him, but there are lots of good actors who play variations of themselves, consider someone like Stallone. In interviews Tom Hanks said he watched him play his role, which they let him do his way, and Tom crafted the adult version after the kid.

Peter K

My fav Tom Hanks is either Green Mile, Toy Story or Big (although a bit more uncomfy to watch nowadays as an adult).

I'm never going to stop suggesting dial M for murder as a film I'm pretty sure YALL would LOVE. It will probably never be a popular suggestion, because many haven't seen it, but I can almost guarantee that anyone who does absolutely doesn't regret it, so this could include patrons who decide to watch it first with y'all. If you don't want to put it up, at least watch it for yourselves! It's Hitchcock. Most of his are bangers. I like to suggest things that are colloquial as well as cult or niche classics, and this one in particular (I'm pretty sure) would be right up your alley! (And if anything it might bring some others to your YT or Patreon who appreciate reacts to it, who might not find you otherwise). 🙂

Another classic in the books! Thanks! FG gets even better on rewatch, if crying is your thing. Now that you know what happens it’s amazing how much the rest of the movie makes you cry just by knowing what’s ahead.

Jared M

Even if he had the same voice and mannerisms, he was still acting. they gave him lines to say and he acted them out... well! dont take that away from the kid.

Louie Anderson

<3 Since you asked about other Tom Hank movies, i'll suggest one. "The Terminal". Enjoy :-) !

Lifehouse

agreed! so so good

Mr. October

little did i know how far them things were gonna take him!

Mr. October

I think Jenny's thoughts behind her actions were to "save" Forrest from her, because she knew he was so pure. She didn't want to drag him down with her. I just wish that in the end it didn't take a chronic illness for her to settle down.

sOMbr

oh nooo lol

sOMbr

Fun fact, the kid who played young Forrest was not really acting, his voice and mannerisms were how he acted naturally. It was Tom Hanks who told the director that he would mold his performance to mimic the young man. Brilliant move, because it was the way Hanks delivered his performance that made this so special, and it was the kid who actually set the tone for that character.

Peter K

glad i voted for you to watch this. great reaction.

Phil Tilly

Easily one of the best movies ever tom Hanks is the Goat. Will never understand people who say this movie is overrated. I'm in my 30s my mom died from cancer and a good buddy died in the marines. This movie still hits hard for me. An all time classic!

Kevin Matthew

“Why are his shoes so busted?” Me out loud: “these are my runnin shoes”

Katie Thomas

A timeless classic. Gotta be one of the best movies ever made

Melani Hadzic
