Mrs. October's (Brooke) Dad told us this one is his favorite so we decided to check it out.
It's safe to say we trust his movie opinions now!
Shout out to all the dads including Mr. Ron and Mr October <3
Let us know what you think about this one!
I know I'm late to the party, but I love this movie and have watched it over 20x at least. Just wanted to add that the actor Oliver Reed who played Proximo passed away before the movie was completed so a couple of his later scenes are clipped from older scenes and relighted to look different. You can tell which ones based off repeated viewings, (The line: "Shadows and dust" for example) but he was an important character in the story and I'm glad they figured out a way to make it work. Another thing I noticed upon this viewing after watching shows such as GOT is how Joaquin Phoenix is lighted in some of the scenes. Such as light from above to darken his eyes to the point you can't see them, or only from one side of his face to make him look more troubled or evil. And of course the costumes were amazing.

One of my all time favorite movies!
Bonus info: It won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and Best Male Actor for Russell Crowe as Maximus! Hans Zimmers perfect score (music) was also so great and memorable. It also received a nomination. Same goes for Joaquin Phoenix who was nominated, for Best Supporting Actor, for his role as Emperor Commodus!
This is a real movie gem, and a certified classic!
So happy you liked it! Mr.Octobers immediate reaction when the movie ended was so great!

In the books, Joffreys daddy issues are more apparent so it does track. Ruthless, resentful cowards.

Spain was part of the Roman empire and that is where Maximus was from, so yes, he was a Spainiard. Also, fun fact: In the early 60's in Houston, Judge Roy Hofienend went to Rome and saw the colossium and had a vision to build a stadium in Houston to top that. What he created was the Astrodome. The world's first domed stadium. The Astrodome is no longer in use but is still here and is now an officially protected Texas historical building. (proud Texan talking here). Never had gladiator battles there but just about everything else from baseball, football, basketball, monster truck , rodeos...you name it. LOL.

That's why studios make refurbished sequels of superhero movies that are cheap and where main character's personality and arch lies within his/hers superpowers and nothing else. Anime have the same recipe. Boring and fatal for the art of filmmaking..

Movies like this will unfortunately never be made again since they cost studios too much money and cannot be squeezed out for sequels to make additional revenue.

Fun fact guys! The actor who played Joffrey in GOT said that his caracter was based on Joaquin Phoenix' portrayal of Commodus in Gladiator.

All time great movie, just a classic in storytelling and incredible acting. I said it somewhere else before but if you love this movie I'm telling you The Last Samurai is another all time great movie very similar to Gladiator.
Also side note the comparison to game of thrones is definitley there but that made me think about the other HBO show called Rome. It heavily influenced how HBO went about creating game of thrones, even shared multiple actors. Loved that show as well.

Respect to Jack Gleeson. In multiple scenes and episodes when I initially binged GoT, he reminded me of Joaquin as Commodus. Different characters with different vices, but the delivery of being a deranged monarch is so believable that it makes them truly hatable and appreciated.

So did I. I went with friends that knew about it but I had no idea, hadn’t seen a trailer or even heard about it. Walked out of the theater blown away by what I’d just seen.

The ultimate business card / introduction. "My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions and loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son. Husband to a murdered wife. And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next."

Strenght and Honor! One of my favorite movies. I have watched this many times even not historically very accurate but very well done. Music, fight scenes and Russell Crowe is The Gladiator! Dad has spoken :)
