TROPIC THUNDER (2008) Reaction

Comments

The reason RDJ did not get flack for this. Was because it is a comedy. Comedy's soul is pushing the boundaries of what is acceptable in society, so truly, there are no limits to what can be considered comedy. The only thing it's how many people laugh at it. That's it. And funny enough, the black community in general loved his character from every reaction and interview i've seen. And the simple jack bit was a comedic, jab, and all of the actors that have play the roles of someone with a mental disability... And the full retard scene was exposing how the better someone is at portraying the real thing, the less acclaimed they are as an actor sean penn played a mentally handicapped father in I am sam and it was probably one of the most accurate portrayals of someone with his condition ever caught on film and he didn't win a single award, even though it's also a great film, so he was explaining to him, you never go Full retard. You have to hold back to get the award.

Michael Shelton

Thanks for the recommendation, ill check it out. And i completely forgot about him in mandalorian. that character was great.

Jens B

Yeh I say the same about my gen z sister😂JK's sorry if I offended you,I might be getting to comfy here🤐

⚠️ October's spoiler ahead if you haven't seen "the madolorian" or "warrior" don't read this comment please don't wanna spoil anything,Jens you Should watch the movie "warrior" it's a MMA movie(I understand may not be your type) but has a deep bunch of family drama behind scenes it can be very impactful and quiet a sad story I do watch it for that(MMA) but without the other half.. the family issues behind closed doors I wouldn't be watching it as it would be like every other MMA movie (not a fan)but this one stands out,Nick Nolte was in that aswell as a main/side character and I really enjoy his performance not to mention the voice is very iconic he was also in madolorian and Nick Nolte is just a underappreciated actor (imo)btw Tom Hardy is in it aswell one of the first movies I watched with him and sparked my interest in him as a actor and yeh the hulk was my first time seeing him aswell in "warrior"he plays a father with 2 sons and it's basically a family issue related drama type (dunno) if it's just me,but I watch this movie for the family drama I feel I can relate in a sort of way and the acting is amazing from the 3 main characters also I found a sad but really nice song to chill to and think/reflect through this movie,🙏🏾❤️"the national-about today"yes it's sad sounding but nice and reassuring in a way

If yall liked Danny Mcbride (the pyrotech guy) you should check out Pineapple Express, This is the End, Land of The Lost, 30 Minutes or Less, or The Heartbreak Kid (this one has Ben Stiller too) & a super funny show with him in it is The Righteous Gemstones (it's so fuckin good)

ShittyShittyGameGang

"Chaplin" got him his only best lead actor Oscar nomination, too.

Love this movie and loved your reaction to it! If done correctly, satire is timeless. Has anyone mentioned the works of Mel Brooks? Check out “Blazing Saddles” it was released in 1974, so some of the references are dated, but it’s still a work of comedic genius in its writing and execution, imo anyway.

CheshireKat528

YES! RDJ back in the day! Great suggestion! I’m all about the drama “Less Than Zero” & “Chaplin” are a couple of my favorite RDJ performances.

CheshireKat528

Then calmly says, “Find out who that was.” 😂😂😂 Loved T.C.’s performance in this!

CheshireKat528

Yeah that's the thing with this movie in particular is it's actually making fun of method acting by doing something as ridiculous as actually doing a blackface character, which yes, is played completely satirical, which is why he isn't canceled for it. There might have been some people then and still now who don't get Satire, but that's their own ignorance to deal with. I wouldn't worry about giving a natural reaction to anything, if I personally don't like it, I'll probably keep it to myself, because I know you're just fallible humans like me, and if people do make a fuss on something, you can ignore, or just take it as an opportunity to learn something. There's no need imo to try and appease anyone in particular by being fake or avoidant, and if you make a mistake and someone points it out, ignore it, or just apologize and life will go on. This movie did a good job imo of representing actors, acting, and movie production stereotypes, while also delivering on a good script in itself, so for that it holds up.

Charissa Kay

Me, too.

JIM SCHMITZ

OMG I love heart and soul

asia roberson

Remarkably multi-leveled humor, great cast and dialogue. If you want to see R. Downey, Jr demonstrate even more acting range in a comedy with heart: "Heart and Souls". After seeing this reaction, I know you'll love the "Deadpool"s. Oh, btw, R D, Jr landed an Oscar supporting actor nomination for this.

JIM SCHMITZ

Great movie! Great review! What a cast

Michael Taylor

Also the watch😂

Tayshawn Williams

Flaming dragons expression to being told to step back and f**K his own face was my gaming profile for a few years 😅now my gaming profile is simplejack with the simplejack profile picture I love that whole rant " I will massacre you,I WILL FUCK YOU UP!!!"(👀...😐)

Brycey

Shouldn't you be on set giving hugh Jackman a tuff time? Mr "Ryan Reynolds"🙂

Brycey

Btw if ya can bring the doggo in for a quick guest appearance would be awesome obviously if she/he was wanting to be there for cuddles haha I enjoyed seeing him or her/...Leo (Mr video) has done the same thing, everyone would love it☺️

Brycey

I was so happy watching tropic thunder with you two I had no clue about it either when I first watched,I had a similar reaction "wtf am I watching?"but you slowly catch on to the idea/story but it's one of my favourites and the funny thing is no one had a issue with it at the time it was Only around 2 give or take years ago where certain snowflakes tried making a issue about it,?the world's insane these days.. honestly if you have a issue with it then it's your issue take some notes from Aussies and learn to not take everything so seriously haha then maybe you won't be so "depressed/traumatized or have PTSD"it gets thrown around that much it means nothing anymore and it undermines what the true meaning is back in the day it was just know as being upset or unhappy now it's depression and that's a excuse that Trump's everything sorry bout the rant life's good if you focus on yourself and stop worrying about others and trying to be the centre of attention I'm on patreon and YouTube that's it,even YouTube is becoming more chaotic and drama much like social media I hope you can remember cos I do a while back you put up a post about the Squidward looking dude from Avengers Infinity war and said name this guy wrong answers only or something to that effect I said "Les Grossman" hahah now watching this I hope you get the reference I made btw you already know but you 2 are awesome and I support you two all the way there's only 3 patreon channels I know I'll be staying with always and that's mr.video,3 katanas(I think they just rebranded they're name for a reason)and Mr/Mrs video (the October's)wish all the best and I hope one day to see kengan ashura here or love, death, robots 🇦🇺🤝❤️

Brycey

love Mrs October's laugh.

YoureMrLebowski

My recommendation for Ben Stiller comedies: There’s Something About Mary, Dodgeball & Meet the Parents. There is an odd one that’s really good too like… The Royal Tenenbaums, but it’s definitely not for everyone.

Ray H

You guys should check out This is the End since you liked Tropic Thunder so much

Ryan Reynolds

Spent years not knowing that was RDJ. It blew my mind when I finally found out. Also, he does stay in character for the special features and DVD commentary. It's on YT and it's fucking hilarious, all off-script improvising. It's legendary.

Kyle Clemons

"The more inappropriate the better", huh? Oh boy, are ya'll gonna LOVE Deadpool when you get to him! LMAO!!!

DarrellWaller

“THIS IS FALMMING DRAGON” will forever be funny asf😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 I use to rewind that part 100 times😭

Tayshawn Williams

I can’t believe y’all haven’t watched this back then😂 this was HILARIOUS 😭 what’s crazy is when I was younger I thought those movie trailers were real and I would actually try to find those movies😂😂😂😂😂. Robert playing a black dude was so fucking funny😂

Tayshawn Williams

The only other thing i've seen Nick Nolte in was Hulk 2003, that might be what you remember him from.

Jens B

Most underrated line and delivery… “Yeah, well…At least you get to choose yours…I’m stuck with mine…” *wistfully stares into middle-nothingness*…😂

Kiera Walker

Believe it or not, but RDJ actually got an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for this movie.

Quinten Shibusawa

Probably the greatest comedy of our generation lol RDJ didn't really get that much backlash he said on Joe rogan podcast that ben stiller as simple jack covered for him lol I'd love more comedy as well, I was thinking the other day I wish you'd do the American Pie franchise if you haven't seen them also the Austin powers movies are classics

Christian

“This is Flaming dragon!” lives rent free in my head 😂

TC24

At the time, when the movie came out, there was some backlash for that part... but it was mostly ignored because the black community understood that it's all SATIRE.

Duron Ball

don't be afraid to go full retard.

YoureMrLebowski

He'll yeah. This is a top 5 comedy imo!! Can't wait to watch.
