LMDE - A Distro For Show

Back in 2014, Canonical was still trying to find a place for Ubuntu and Mark Shuttlesworth was in the spotlight saying (then) radical things.

Canonical had made some bold decisions regarding Ubuntu and it freaked a lot of people out. Community members found reasons to hate Canonical, such as their decision to create Upstart, and then replace Upstart with systemd, and then Unity 7, and Ubuntu Mobile, the list goes on.

Linux Mint Debian Edition started sometime in 2014 seemingly as a proof of concept to see if Mint could exist without Ubuntu, ostensibly if Ubuntu somehow vanished or changed the policy around unofficial Ubuntu flavors.

For a long time, I actually thought Mint was based on Debian since they make almost no effort to show on their website that Mint is based on Ubuntu.

My opinion of Linux Mint vs Linux Mint Debian Edition is that having both distributions side-by-side is silly and an artifact of FOSS politics at the time. Just choose one or the other; Ubuntu or Debian.
