Hair Steps
Added 2016-03-01 17:19:00 +0000 UTCHere is a step by step presentation to Elly's and Max's hair from A Tiny Secret Page 16. Not necessarily in order. The 4 parts are all on different layers, always use as many layers as possible, it will make correction way easier in the end, even if it's hard to find things when you have 30 layers, it'll benefit you more in the end.
1: Begin with the basic color of the hair of the character
2: Based on this color get a darker and lighter shade and highlight the hair, this will give the illusion that the head is round and will help your lighting, it also makes the hair appear more soft.
3 and 4 are interchangeable.
Get an even more dark and an even more light shade of the hair. On seperate layers use the lighter shade to highligt some parts of the hair.
Then use the darker shade to frame these highlights to create the illusion of 3d. Here you can make sure it's clear where the light is coming from.
There would be a step 5 usually with even more, lighter highligts more to the top of the hair, but in a close up like this, these highlights would be on the top of the image close to the white frame wich didn't look right and threw the center of the image off balance so I decided to abandon that.
