It’s a remake of a story called No Longer Human originally by Osamu Dazai. Of course there’s a lot of horror elements that you can only expect from Ito, but the underlying factor is that this is an autobiography telling the tragic life and suicidal thoughts of the original author. After this book was published, Dazai killed himself.
