You'll probably catch flak for that Dumbledore reference. Just a friendly heads up lol. Gandalf first appeared in The Hobbit, a prequel to LOTR, way back in 1937. JK Rowling herself wasn't born until 1965. It's not just Harry Potter that was inspired by LOTR, it's virtually all fantasy written in the last century. LOTR may seem to be full of tired fantasy tropes (wizards, elves, dwarves etc) but that's because it literally popularized those tropes. Author JRR Tolkien was a professor of ancient languages and even helped compile the Oxford English dictionary. He created multiple fictional languages including Dwarvish, two forms of Elvish, and the Black Speech of Mordor. These were full languages that you could study and translate into real world ones. He decided to build a story around these languages to give them some use and purpose. The amount of world building in LOTR is crazy. In addition to the languages, Tolkien wrote thousands of years of histories and genealogies for all of these kingdoms and peoples. These are found in the Legendarium accompanying the books. In his words, he was setting out to create a mythology for England to rival the pantheons of Greece and Rome. He took elements of Celtic Lore, Anglo-Saxon Legend, Germanic Folklore, and Norse Mythology and synthesized them, before passing them through his own filter. For example, Elves existed in Germanic stories but they were always small, borderline evil, mischievous creatures. Tolkien is the one that made them taller, more angel-like, and proficient at archery. Tolkien didn't invent Elves, but when you think of them, you think of his version of them. Link from Zelda comes straight from Tolkien's description of Elves for example. Orcs on the other hand are something he created entirely on his own. His Catholic faith and experience in WWI also helped shape his writing. It can get lost on new viewers just how deep this world is and how inspirational it has been for so much of our pop culture.

Fun fact: Viggo Mortensen (Aragorn) loved his horse so much while working on these movies he purchased them (not sure if it's a he or her)! He even purchased Arwen's horse and gave them to Arwen's stunt double because she fell in love with her horse!

Love these films, they’re so well done. Beautiful sets, props, score, and of course story (thank you Tolkien). Can’t wait for the next one, this trilogy is amazing.
