I think Finn is just wholeheartedly devoted to doing what his mother wants, but I think Kol is there mainly because he didn't want to be swept away into oblivion when the Other Side collapsed. We even saw a scene where Matt was "on holiday" in the Other Side where Kol insisted that Matt had to remember what was happening so he could tell everyone about it. So, somehow his mother offered him the chance to escape by putting his spirit in someone else's body. Not just any body, but the body of a witch so that Kol could regain something he'd loved that he'd lost when he became a vampire. I guess I'm just saying, Finn is a believer whereas Kol is more pragmatic. He's only going to help his mother as much as he absolutely must to stay alive,
