He’s actually not, I have my Masters in English, emphasis in poetry, and that written romance was just a ploy to lure women and promise them happiness and love. When in actuality, they were abused. Even philosophers from the antiquity period did this. Those same men are also the ones that redacted the women that were allowed to read and write. Ptolemy’s work was translated by a woman but for centuries men got the credit. You can find this theme in Leander, Chaucer’s work, Etc. This theme carries well into the 1800’s such as John Milton, Donne, Coleridge etc. I have in-depth, cited essays over this too.

Neal’s understanding of historical romance and marriage is so fundamentally wrong just objectively. Just off the top of my head Napoleons letters to Josephine are a great example of romance being more than a “hundred of years old.” Love and romance is probably the most written about subject for 2000 years. Also his understanding of marriage as a chattel type exchange is wrong. That was the case in higher class families but courting as we think of it even today occurred quite often in families that didn’t have any goods to trade. Many people were free to marry who they chose even back in the Middle Ages. Was it the best system no, but it wasn’t all daughters being traded. This was the stupidest most Reddit brained take I’ve ever heard on this show.
