And they have been together for 7 years.. and only comes up when guy wants to marry you. She is totally fine with it for 7 years but then will actually agree to marrying you if you get rid of it.. sounds like an extremely superficial relationship. “We would do anything for each other..” and can’t even accept the guy plays with legos. This is textbook relationship problem. Guy likes hot girl and the girl has just stayed with this safe guy that she can obviously control.

I've got my nerdy habits (we're all paytch subscribers, so no judgies lol), but I also know how tacky it'd be for my house to be drowning in collectibles and trinkets, lol... I've got an entertainment room for that, and I happily let my girlfriend be in charge of the decor for the other 95% of the house 😁 I wasn't 100% sure of what his girlfriend's frustrations are, tho. Does she want him to just drop his hobbies entirely, cold turkey? He needs to leave that woman immediately. Taking away something that partially defines you will probably affect any future chemistry anyway, so jump out before things get worse. If the woman just wants the guy to reign it in but is otherwise OK with him, that's a perfectly reasonable gripe to have, and he should get started on it yesterday.

I think people often don't recognize that an interest in something doesn't trump the other person's lack of interest in something. We all have interests, but it is a pretty big expectation that one's interests will be front and center in the decor of one's home when you're living with another person. To be honest, the way that guy spoke about his girlfriend felt like a significant red flag (all he could say about her was that she was hot, had a nice body and was ambitious "for a woman"). It screamed veiled misogyny to me and I am not inclined to have a generous interpretation of the issues he described. : /

I’ve been in a relationship with a big nerd for over a decade. The caller situation felt so familiar to me, so I really wanted to flag some things. He really needs to flesh out the specific problem. There is a HUGE difference between a partner asking someone to tone down home decor and the public presentation of their hobbies, versus actually wanting them to give them up entirely. This, at certain levels, could be abusive. I'm also curious if he is spending too much time on his hobbies and neglecting everyday responsibilities or quality time with the girlfriend. When my guy and I moved in together, we had some tough convos about how I didn’t want cartoonish art that he purchased at comicon on the walls or manga with busty creatures laying around the common places of our apartment. Maybe it was pretentious, but I wanted to feel like adults and not have to answer questions from friends and family. Now that we’re in a different, even more adult home with frequent visitors, he totally agrees. As you boys said, this is exactly what the man cave is for. However, I have zero problem with him having these interests and hobbies. I don’t get some of them, but he likes what he likes and it’s part of what makes him who he is. Those interests relax and motivate him. At times he has self-consciously apologized for the time he spends playing video games; probably due to nerd and relationship stereotypes. This made me sad, I told him he had nothing to apologize for. He doesn’t choose those games over plans with me. He’s a highly successful individual, doesn’t neglect his responsibilities. I love that he has games that engage his mind after a long day. Conversely, I’d be out the door if he told me I needed to grow up and stop watching Summer House or practicing eyeshadow looks when I have nowhere to go. Now, is the caller going days without showering while painting his warhammers, or wearing anime t-shirts to nice family events? That’s a problem. But to ask someone to give up their beloved hobbies because they are perceived as juvenile is absurd. If that’s the case, I’m with Eldis. She’s looking for an out OR is massively controlling and going along with her demands could lead to a bored, frustrated and painful life.
