NEBULA RELEASE – How Flying In Movies Evolved Over 100 years

For all you Nebula subscribers, here's the new one.

This started with me seeing the insane response to that one shot from a TV spot for the new Superman, where people lost their minds over a 3-second shot of Superman flying, and thinking this might be worth talking about and dunking on some nerds. And then the more I thought about it the more the idea expanded untl it covered 100 years of cinema and some way bigger ideas. This was a fun one.

I went through a period in my life (I think my 20s) where whenever I dreamed I was flying it was always in a seated position with my legs straight forward and my arms stuck out like airplane wings. I usually took flight by tripping and falling, with my arms outstretched. At some point this shifted to more of the cartoon Peter Pan position flying - arms out like wings, legs below or behind. I take off by making a running jump. I don't think I've ever dreamed of flying with my arms forward like Superman or swept back like Neo.

Forgive a "why didn't you mention" style comment, but I've been watching The Greatest American Hero, and i laugh every time as Ralph's clumsy terrible flying. Not sure I've seen anything like it anywhere else.
