Greetings adventurers!
There are those that are so devout in their faith that they take to pinning the scripture to their very garb to remind themselves of what they consider necessary to remember. It’s an odd practice, but then again, I craft magical items for a living so perhaps I can’t be so quick to judge. What I will say is that when one of these robes landed in my shop, I was confused as to what properties it may have, but it seems that I was even more wrong for being so quick to judge the practice. The means of quickly casting a predetermined spell? Well that’s something interesting all itself.
Our patrons get early access to all of these items as well as additional formats that are easily usable in both physical and online play for D&D and Pathfinder 2E. Additionally they get high-res art exports, easy to use text exports, behind the scenes updates, and a lot more.
If that strikes your fancy, consider becoming a Patron
Design notes from Matthew:
When designing things that modify the magical systems and the action economy of other 5E or PF2E you have to be pretty careful in the way that you go about it. Action economy is basically the core balance point for D20 based games. Certainly damage and movement are important in their own ways, but all of that centers around what you have to spend in order to actually do those things when it comes to your turn, thus why skills like Haste are considered powerful.
For the 5E version, the biggest point I had to contend with was figuring out how many spells this robe could store and then how to properly word the fact that it casts without using an action. There is no concept of free actions in 5E (something many people are surprised to learn) so in order to get the point across, I basically had to reinvent free actions by stating that this casts instantaneously, does not consume an action, but does count as your action for a turn. All of those were needed to keep this from ebing insanely powerful.
In the PF2E version, well by not specifying cast times, I instantly knew that this needed to be limited to one spell a day, otherwise this would rise in power quite quickly. PF2E is intentionally reserved in the power it offers at times and while some see that as restrictive, I think that’s just the cost of doing business in a system like that. There’s still plenty of ways to be powerful, but it’s a sum of all parts rather than individual pieces.
This is it, the final magic item of the year 2024. Our next one will release on January 1st, 2025 so this wraps up another year of creating for AbyssalBrews. It’s been a great experience so far and coming into the new year, we’re planning to keep bringing you things you can use and love for your games. Thank you all for a wonderful year of support and kindness. Here’s to a great 2025.
We highly encourage you to join our Discord server where you’ll get access to exclusive channels that have sneak peeks, behind the scenes chatter, and more.
