One More Thing: Acerbak

Greetings Adventurers,

We've moved away from our Drudgework creations to start exploring other realms of problems the Dwarves of Bharzul may face and let me tell you, this one is a little terror in its own right. We wanted to put together a creature that felt like a truly horrible thing to face in the depths and I think we nailed it with the Acerbak. Between their acidic spit and fast movements, your players are going to have a terrible time trying to deal with these beasts.

Design notes from Matthew:

Deep below the surface is a setting that presents a lot of opportunity for us to explore things that get a little terrifying. I had an initial idea for something that tunnels with acid and that's really where the idea took off from. Fernando knew immediately that he wanted it to be a bit more lizardlike and that made for the perfect combination of something that moves quickly, ambushes, and vanishes. It's a difficult and scary thing to tackle, but I was so excited to make it.

For our 5E crowd, one of the standout features is that these can really destroy armor in a short order if people aren't paying attention. I know for many, rust creatures are one of the worst things to fight due to their ability to destroy armor and it always saddened me that the mechanic didn't get more representation throughout the game in other places. It was nice being able to bring that to more creatures and put our own spin on it with acid instead of rust.

Pathfinder on the other hand has well established mechanics for damaging items, so here I tried to focus more on interesting combinations like the tail sweep into acid spew. I think there's a good chance that these could cause a lot of pain for would be adventurers out there especially if they come across them in a pack.

While we are continuing to explore more of the Dwarven theme with this release, it's nice to get into something other than constructs for a bit. We already have an idea for next month's creature that is going to probably be a bit more of a monstrosity. We can't wait to share it with you.
