Trychydts messaged me asking about the King's Memory in Dark Souls 2. As you may recall, you warp to it from Vendrick's armor at the end of the Undead Crypt. It provides a brief interaction with a non-hollowed Vendrick, and kicks you out the moment you ascend the staircase (from which you can catch a brief glimpse of Velstadt, still alive in the past).
He was wondering how it was done; Is it the same location with different settings, or a duplicate of some kind?
I hadn't thought to check this out because I mistakenly assumed it was just the same location. But if I was more observant, I would've noticed that Velstadt's room is very much lacking in detail compared to the actual boss room. It turns out, it is an alternate & simplified duplicate of this area of the Undead Crypt. There's not much to it, but it's fun seeing the empty versions of Velstadt's room and the preceding hallway.
The very end of the video shows both maps loaded simultaneously, revealing the spatial difference between the two actual locations in-game.
One of the poll options that lost to Dark Souls 3's world layout was a follow-up out-of-bounds episode for Dark Souls 2. I have some other content on the way before I'll be revisiting it, but I will get back to it eventually and I'm looking forward to it. I'm glad this was brought to my attention because I got to learn something new, which I will now be sure to include in that future episode.
