Region Splashes in v2.5! | Patreon Weekly #271

Hey Patrons, in this weekly I’m going to share a look at once visual improvement that’s coming in v2.5: new region splashes!

There’s also a new Patreon Poll this week, covering potential additions to rare cursed wand effects!

Region Splashes!

As a quick recap, I’ve been working with Aleks for a while now on new splash arts for each of the game’s regions! I last shared them with all patrons a bit over a year ago! Aleks was busy for a while, but we’ve recently gotten back to it and now have all the region splashes finished!

Firstly, here’s the splash for each region:

These splashes will show up in the loading screens that previously just had some scrolling wall tiles, here’s a little GIF showing how that looks:

For portrait users, I'm also experimenting with giving each splash three different areas that the camera can focus on, as opposed to the hero splashes which obviously only focus on the center. A different focus point is picked for each splash every run. Here are some images that demonstrate how those areas will look for the thinnest phones currently widely used:

The implementation here was mostly as simple as just sticking the images in the game and adjusting the UI to compensate, but there’s one major thing left to do. Obviously players wouldn’t appreciate loading screens being slower, but there also need to be some time to appreciate these new splashes! To address this I’m doing to move the usual region lore texts into the loading screen; and they’ll appear each time you initially descent to each region.

The text will have a darkened background instead of the usual opaque window background, and will persist until the player presses a ‘continue’ button. There’s also be a minimize button that’ll let you view the whole splash art unobstructed.

Now that I’ve got the 10th anniversary blog out of the way, I’m hoping to get an alpha for v2.5 ready soon, hopefully more on that next week.

Afraid I'm not planning to revert this change in any cases, although I have added a text shake effect when falling to try and preserve a bit of that visual feel.

The splash art is pretty breathtaking especially demon halls, it's like doom concept art. If I can ask a question, though? The effect when falling is one that I realized I missed and it feels jarring to see the splash art for the region instead of the falling effect, what's the possibility of reinserting that interstitial blank black screen with motion lines for falling?
