Inventory Management | Patreon Poll #54

Hey Patrons! In this poll I’m asking you about inventory management

Since the addition of trinkets, I’ve gotten some feedback about inventory congestion, which I’m aware is an ongoing problem. While I do want players to feel pressured to use their items instead of hoarding everything, I also appreciate that it’s not fun to feel constant inventory pressure. It’s not something that I’m specifically targeting in v2.5, but I am interested in seeing what can be done about it regardless. Part of that is understanding the problem better though, including what strategies players often employ to mitigate it.

In particular I’m aware that lots of players regularly throw items and equipment they know they won’t immediately use into chasms, so they can find those items later on the next floor. That’s not a strategy which I’m thrilled about, but I also don’t want to nerf it while it’s helping to mitigate other issues. So, I wanted to ask you guys how inventory management currently feels, and about what strategies you employ to help with it.

You’re also welcome to comment here or on the discord if you have any more detailed thoughts!

The results of this poll will help me get a better idea of the current state of inventory management and will influence changes that I may I make to it in v2.5.

I tend to hoard non-consumables just in case I find the rose later in the game. It's frustrating to have no lower-tier weapons or armours left to equip the ghost.

If a run is going well and I have extra food/health (or increased speed or something) once I reach a shop I will go back to the previous shop and pick up every item between them that I can to sell/use. I'll also buy as much as I need/want from that previous shop with the cheaper prices (like health pots and stackable items). I wonder how common that is

I usually drop equipment near next floor stairs (preferably before boss level) so I dont need to run around whole floor to find them. Usually beacause I want to sell useless equipment to the shop or keep better one for later. I also leave eqipment near the troll because either needing space for gold or just knowing I will reforge the equipment later when I find another pair.

Typically only chasm drop on pre-boss floors since they will all land in the entrance room nice and "organized"

I always end up with like 6 different weapons and armors which I will promptly either sell if it's too low a teir or find a secure room to drop them in. I don't like chasm drops myself since if I am getting chased around I typically forget about them

- Use-identify things in situations where they might be potentially beneficial - Run back to a store to sell non-consumables - Do a chasm drop, ideally into a boss level so the items all cluster around the stairs and I don't have to go looking for them I look at it as another of the game's many resource management challenges

This is hilarious, I never thought about other people doing this as well. I absolutely do throw stuff down chasms. Sometimes multiple times.

This comes up frequently for me between about level 4 and level 15. Strategies:

> what strategies you employ to help with it If I forget to ensure scrolls have a majority leaving the Goo level - immediately discard and start over. And chasm drop - only with potions. Jokes aside, the move of feather fall really has an impact threatening to nudge the pressure from "annoying but accepted game feature" to just on the other side of the fine line... My main method is to drop everything in front of every alchemy pot and set a beacon to come back later - dying from hunger.

I’d argue the issue is on earlier floors. Not knowing what the potions and scrolls are disincentivses their usage and causes hoarding. More ways to identify in the early game would mitigate this, in some capacity. Also, at least for me, I simply like hoarding a bunch of stuff. Walking up to Yog with stacks upon stacks of unused scrolls and potions makes me feel good at the game.
