V2.4.0’s Final Trinkets | Patreon Weekly #257

Hey Patrons, in this weekly I’m going to share some details on the trinkets I plan to add this week before v2.4.0 launches! Sorry for the day delay this week, I was busy with some other stuff yesterday and over the weekend.

My decisions on what to add here are largely based on the results of last month’s Patreon Poll. The top four choices are all being addressed in some way:

The Mimic Tooth is another risk v. reward trinket, increasing danger from mimics in exchange for more frequent mimic bonus loot. Mimics will be notably harder to detect with this trinket, even at +0, but as you level it up mimics will become more common, and there’ll be an increasing chance to encounter a new mimic type. Keep your eyes peeled for ebony mimics, seriously, or you’ll walk right into one.

The Wondrous Resin changes up how wand curses work, making them much more potentially beneficial. The higher level the trinket, the more likely it will be that cursed wand effects are neutral or positive. I haven’t decided fully yet, but higher level resin will also make wands more likely to be cursed, or cause non-cursed wands to sometimes also cast a curse effect. I may also add a few new cursed wands effects here to improve variety a bit, possibly including effects that only trigger if you have the resin.

The Eye of Newt lets you trade regular vision for special vision. Each upgrade reduces your regular vision range by enough to lose 1 more tile of range from the normal 8, but also grants you another tile of short-range mind vision! There are all sorts of interesting strategies you can use here to see enemies through walls, or depend less on an already-reduced vision range, but seeing everything else, or seeing enemies at range, will be tricky.

Unfortunately, I’m probably going to postpone the plant-based trinket for now. Having plants randomly sprout is an interesting concept that’s great for strategy variety, but I worry about having another trinket that heavily synergizes with the huntress/warden on the first release. I will keep the idea ready for possible addition in a future wave of trinkets, perhaps with a similar strategy-altering effect but a different theme.

We’ll see how things go, but I’d like to have all the trinket additions locked in during this week. Look forward to these trinkets appearing in the beta over the next few days.

Joking on the Exotic Crystals trinket: Most noticeable effects - inventory space unmanageable and Unstable Spellbook impossible to complete (Idea - alchemy recipes to downgrade exotic to normal still costing some energy - 2 to 3 sounds fair)... However that "more plant levels trinket" on a Warden was way OP. Overall - surprisingly excellent addition.

Resin should add the chance for non-cursed ones to cast a curse in addition to its cast. Will make for much more interesting (chaotic) outcomes especially with certain combos being fun to see (wand of frost cast with toxic gas curse effect for example). More cursed wands would definitely be a big drawback to reign in its power (if it is decided it is indeed overpowered).
