Exotic Potions | Patreon Weekly #118
Added 2021-09-07 16:30:01 +0000 UTCHey Patrons! I’ve been fairly busy this week with moving and a few other obligations, but I still have some news to share!
Firstly, there’s a new poll! Poll #21 covers some options for new alchemy recipes in v1.1.0.
Progress is also continuing with pins, but I’ve got nothing to actually report yet. I will hopefully have things locked in by next week.
Early Exotic Potion Changes
As a part of the v1.1.0 alchemy changes, I’m making various balance and mechanics tweaks to lots of recipes that need them. This week I did some concepting work on improvements to some of the less utilized or less powerful exotic items. Here are some of the exotic potion ideas that I’m pretty happy with:
- Potion of Magical Sight (low winrate, low usage): This one is a simple buff. I like magical sight’s tradeoff of vision range for more information and more duration, but clearly that tradeoff needs to be more generous. I’m buffing the vision range to 12 tiles, from 8.
- Potions of Corrosive Gas and Storm Clouds (mid-low winrate, mid-low usage): Another straightforward buff, I think both of these potions just need a little more oomph. I’m boosting the starting damage on corrosive gas by 1 and having both potions start their AOE out in a 3x3 area, instead of at a single cell.
- Potion of Shrouding Fog (mid-low winrate, v. low usage): This one has very low usage despite not being too bad, so I’m trying to make it easier to work with. The smokescreen will still block vision for enemies, but the hero and allies will be able to see through it. This should be a fairly mild buff overall (smart players could already track enemies in the fog), but it will make the item feel much better.
- Potion of Holy Furor (v. high winrate, v. low usage): Low popularity but really high power means this item needs a total redesign. Rather than just giving a souped-up seed effect, I considered ways this potion could tie into the level up mechanic. I settled on something quite interesting: trading the level up for additional talent points! The potion will get its name changed and will give the player two bonus talent points in any tier instead of a level up!
You might notice the absence of adrenaline surge here. I am planning to make changes to it as well but don’t currently have any solid ideas. I expect I’ll have more concepting done for next week.

Very high usage and a slightly low winrate make me comfortable leaving that one as-is for now, there are bigger priorities. It also has quite strong usage as an ingredient in dragon's blood, which is quite popular and arguably better if you have fireblast.

2021-09-07 19:12:09 +0000 UTCYou don't get the level up, so essentially you're trading the hp, acc, and evasion for an extra talent point. At the very least I will likely limit it to one use per talent tier, will see if more is needed. I didn't want to just give it 1 point though, as then it's directly worse in most cases.

2021-09-07 19:10:07 +0000 UTCi do have one question: what about dragon breath? atm it's just a single-use fireblast, making it completely obsolete if you have the wand

2021-09-07 18:55:08 +0000 UTCpotion of holy furor sounds like a direct upgrade to experience potion now (I can just imagine farming exp potions and then suddenly maxing out my t3 talents)? Or is your max level reduced by 1? Otherwise the changes look good!

2021-09-07 18:50:20 +0000 UTCI'm sad to see Holy Furor go, but I agree it was maybe a bit to strong. More talent points seems awesome though, I frequently feel I could use just a couple more points.
