Alien (1979) * FULL LENGTH REACTION

Thank you to our October Marble winner Francis for this one!!

It honestly feels like this movie was made later than 1979. It feels so ahead of its time! It was a pleasure to see Tom Skerritt and I'm glad I recognized him. Sometimes the voice stands out, and it takes a bit to remember where I heard it.

I love how Ash's actions all make sense by the end! He felt like such a failed scientist by ignoring the rules, but it's all for a reason!! 😀

I'm honestly amazed at the speed of growth for the alien. It was tiny, then BAM! it's massive! I feel like it's not fully grown 🤔

I see why so many people love Ripley, she is a great character! She feels very real, too. Sigourney Weaver was amazing, and I'm looking forward to seeing her in more (this is the perfect time to rewatch Galaxy Quest!! 🥰)

For this style of reaction, you need your own copy to watch the movie.  You can set picture in picture by right clicking twice on the video and selecting "Picture in picture". The right clicking twice is a bit tricky, because you have to right click, then move your cursor so it's not on the menu, then right click again

Thank you so much everyone for your support, you are amazing!!

He is! I noticed that :)

Fyi Ash is Bilbo Baggins

Oh wow the people working on this were ahead of their time! I'm glad that Star Wars came along and pushed this one to be made, it's quite amazing how one movie can affect what gets made. It makes sense though, everyone wants to cash in on what's hot at the moment 😅 I'm glad that there is no romance in this movie, it's rare that it happens, but it's refreshing to see. I mean, especially in a situation like this 🤣

Verowak

This movie has an interesting story to its production. It was sitting on a shelf at the studio until this little unimportant movie named Star Wars was released and studios were frantic for any space based movie. This was the result. The Alien was actually portrayed by a really tall guy in a suit. In Aliens, the sequel, it is mentioned on a screen during Ripley’s hearing that Lambert is a trans woman, born male but has changed to female. I saw in an interview that the crew believed that gender and sexuality will be more fluid in the future. In an early draft of the script had Captain Dallas and Ripley hooking up, but this idea was dropped. The very obvious sexual overtones to the design of the Alien plays to the theme of rape that plays an important part of the franchise. They actually had to tone it down and change the design of the Alien Egg which originally had 2 flaps not four flaps and look like a woman parts and the studio said absolutely not and basically forced them to change it. The Alien was designed by artist H.R.Geiger. They have greatly expanded the lore of the Alien franchise with books and comic.

It's so neat seeing how people are connected and worked together. I never think that people have gone to school together, so this is really fascinating, thank you

Verowak

oh!!! I definitely didn't understand that as why she was deactivation the self destruct. It was very confusing knowing where what is in the ship, I could recognize a few hallways but that's it 😅 I honestly blame the cat owners for my dislike of cats. Animals are what they are, but just because all my neighbours have cats doesn't mean I want them in my yard killing birds and rats and leaving them there 😅

Verowak

Thank you!!! It's such a well made film and I love the mood in it throughout!!

Verowak

John Hurt is a name I know but can't put a face to the name. I had to look him up to see which role he played in this one 😅 I love how we can appreciate and notice new things when we rewatch movies, especially the supporting characters. A lot of times they shine in their own way but we miss it when first seeing a movie. I'm glad you enjoyed the reaction 🥰

Verowak

@ButtercupsTrueLove I so wish they would specify which version they have, it's so frustrating not knowing which version it is. When someone specified a version, I look into it to see how I can watch that one, otherwise I watch the version that is available on a streaming service

Verowak

@MrDannySteele Oh I thought the sequel was Ridley Scott, but James Cameron did the sequel?! I can understand why the sequel is also well loved haha

Verowak

Yeah the set design/details and cinematography are so good in this movie. I just love the atmosphere and slow build up of tension. My understanding is that Ripley tried to deactivate the self destruct because the alien was between her and the only way into the shuttle. I don’t think it’s very clear on a first watch. Er, no, it is not acceptable to leave Jones behind. It makes me sad that so few dog people are also cat people 😩

James Hadden

Amazing film and amazing reaction!!! I love Alien so much

Carlo Glingani

The screenplay was written by Dan O'Bannon and Ronald Shusett, although uncredited were David Giler and Walter Hill, who added Ash as an android and refined the dialog. O'Bannon had written Dark Star with John Carpenter when they were USC film students, and the SF comedy had a few scenes with an alien beach ball with swim fins cut into claw-like feet. O'Bannon wanted to remake the alien scenes into a horror movie instead of a comedy.

Cliff Adams

I agree with @MrDannySteele. This is, indeed, the Theatrical Cut. Here are the times from the blu-ray: * Theatrical: 1:56:37 * Director's Cut: 1:55:49

Ron

Thanks for clarifying that, I am just sitting down to watch it myself, so lore dump coming soon

MrDannySteele

I'm watching her reaction now and she's definitely watching the theatrical cut not the director's cut.

Ian Cano

Yes, however the Director’s Cut is actually shorter than the original theatrical version. While a couple of scenes were added, however the rest of the movie was streamlined to achieve this.

MrDannySteele

Thank you, Vero, for your fun reaction. It helps me to remember the first time I watched "Alien"! The franchise is a bit uneven, with some of the films being more well received than others. Some of the more recent ones I like quite a bit although I have more issues with them than I do the first two. After many viewings of "Alien" I've come to appreciate the casting and roles of the supporting characters as much as Sigourney Weaver. Yaphet Kotto (sp?) and Harry Dean Stanton initially come off as a tag team couple of slackers but when things go to shit they buckle down and pull their weight to help get out of the situation. I saw John Hurt in a small support role in Jim Jarmusch's "Only Lovers Left Alive", which may be one of Jarmusch's more conventional indie films. I think Hurt also got some acclaim for his role as "The Elephant Man" opposite Anthony Hopkins, as a man afflicted with a terrible disfigurement from elephantiasis.

ButtercupsTrueLove

I subscribe to Hulu/Disney+ and the slightly shorter version of "Alien" is available to rent/purchase on Amazon Prime Video - neither Hulu nor Prime Video specify whether it is the theatrical or the director's cut, and I wish that these media providers would do so for clarity's sake. Verowak could probably google for the different versions of a film before viewing but then she would run into the issue of spoilers when a website explains the differences between the versions. A content creator is faced with the dilemma of doing research or going into a first-time movie viewing cold, which is the way I prefer.

ButtercupsTrueLove

Ridley Scott has gone on record saying that he prefers the original theatrical release version. Definitely need to watch the sequel because it is by James freakin Cameron.

MrDannySteele

It is the director’s cut.

MrDannySteele

Whatever version is on Disney+ in Canada, it doesn't specify. That's why I always say the length of the movie in my intro

Verowak

Which version is this?
