Predator (1987) * FULL LENGTH REACTION

This movie reaction is brought to you by one of our Producers!!

GET TO THE CHOPPER!! 🤩🤩

Reading the IMDB trivia actually made me like this movie more lol  Just the camera tricks used and what the original script was supposed to be like.  I'm glad it was changed lol

I still maintain that it would have been better if we hadn't see the first scene of the spaceship

For this style of reaction, you need your own copy to watch the movie.  Also know there is an extension that allows you to do Picture-in-Picture in case you are interested: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/picture-in-picture-extens/hkgfoiooedgoejojocmhlaklaeopbecg?hl=en

Predator (1987) * FULL LENGTH REACTION

Comments

I much prefer the unstoppable menace to be sci-fi instead of supernatural lol

some other recommendations to add to your Arnold list: "True Lies" (1994) directed by James Cameron "Last Action Hero" (1993) has a lot of references to other movies that I don't know if you have seen. AC/DC wrote the song "Big Gun" specifically for the soundtrack, and Arnold is in their music video dressed as his character from the movie. "Total Recall" (1990) "The 6th Day" (2000) "The Running Man" (1987) based on a book by Stephen King. Also more Jesse Ventura. "Raw Deal" (1986) "The Last Stand" (2013) "Commando" (1985) pure 1980's action. Suspension of disbelief required, but a fun popcorn movie. he's also in the ensemble "The Expendables" movies

"Total Recall" is based on a book by well known sci-fi author Phillip K. Dick. There is also a remake from 2012 which is not well liked by fans of the original.

"Predator" (as well as "The Terminator" and several other movies I won't name unless you ask or until you watch them) can be classed as "sci-fi horror", where they follow the horror movie story pattern, but the unstoppable menace is sci-fi rather than supernatural.

JAKH

"Predator 2" also stars Danny Glover, Gary Busey, Bill Paxton, and Adam Baldwin (Jayne from "Firefly"). It adds to the Predator lore and should be watched before you watch the crossovers or the other sequels ("Predators" and "The Predator").

You might also like Carl Weathers' movie "Action Jackson" (1988)

Conan the Barbarian is based on a series of short stories and books by Robert E Howard from the 1930's. There have been a couple additional movies made in the 2000's with actors other than Arnold. His are the 1980's ones, and he also played Conan in the movie "Red Sonja" with Bridgette Nielsen as Sonja. His estate has commissioned a few writers over the years to write more novels. Some of these authors turned out to be quite successful in their own later works, including Robert Jordan and Harry Turtledove. The music for both of those Conan movies was composed by Basil Poledouris. He wrote a full opera score and then pulled parts of it for the movie soundtrack. he also did the music for "Red Dawn", "The Hunt For Red October", "Robocop", and "Starship Troopers". His daughter Zoe Poledouris is also in the music business.

I'm glad your first time, you unknowingly made the movie better by missing the first few minutes! lol

I haven't watched the reaction yet, but I definitely agree about the spaceship not adding anything. I feel even more strongly that they shouldn't have had the opening shot of the spaceship in "The Thing."

WastedPo

oh, watch some vintage stuff man!

Scott Howard

Definitely would have been better without showing the spaceship. When I first watched this movie, back in the day, I missed the first few minutes and it was a better movie for me because of that.

Scott Howard

I had no idea what he looked like, I just knew the name lol He was before my WWF watching lol

You probably recognise Jessie Ventura because was also a pro wrestler, governor of Minnesota (and was an actual Navy SEAL. in Vietnam).

The guerilla camp scene seemed very over the top yeah, the rest of the movie was just great. I love surprises, so not knowing there was an alien would have been nice. The heat vision could be just the technology of the time, that's what I would have attributed it to. Then seeing the alien hands would have been a huge surprise lol I think the opening scene does help with setting the scene and building up anticipation since it's an alien. Then again, I know a lot of people look at movie posters, and it says that "nothing like it has ever been on Earth before", so the alien thing would not have been a surprise. He's SO charming, either as a terminator or part of the rescue squad lol I really look forward to seeing him in other roles.

I really like this movie, for me the suspense works well, as does the chopping between movement music and predator vision. I don’t care for the over the top guerrilla camp scene, but I do absolutely love the jungle shredding scene. It also makes me smile seeing the different between “critic” and audience rating on IMDB. I saw it for the first time over 25 years ago and honestly can’t remember how I felt about the opening spaceship scene back then. Now, I can see people’s dislike of it but feels relatively inconsequential to me. You still had the anticipation building up and seemed excited to get to the reveal. I kind of see the opening as redundant, how much different would it be once you get to the heat vision/alien sounds/clawed hand bit? So perhaps it shouldn’t be there. Practical effects hold up so much better than early CGI and I too love seeing people’s creativity showcased. I’d say this is bread and butter Arnold, which I’m happy with as I find his action man portrayals filled with charm. My guess is the mud would work for a few seconds at most before heating to skin temperature, but doesn’t bother me. Action movies killing the hero? Really?! The audience wouldn’t stand for that crazy talk 😁

James Hadden

I would have loved to have gone into the movie thinking it's action/war, then suddenly there's sci-fi?! That would have been so neat!

Vero: "I still maintain that it would have been better if we hadn't see the first scene of the spaceship." I couldn't agree more! This seems like a choice that a studio executive might have made over the protest of the director so that we poor, dumb viewers might not have to suffer a few minutes of confusion while coming to grips with the fact that this was more than just a war movie... 😠
