Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003) * FULL LENGTH REACTION

Dead Poets Society is on my list since Dr. James Wilson (Robert Sean Leonard) is in it!! It seems I'll be doing actor themed polls a lot this year, there are so many of them! I'll have to look for "making of/behind the scenes" for Master and Commander, the movie looks absolutely stunning, so a very good job to all involved in creating it.

Thanks for the reaction to this; definitely a favourite of mine! The director Peter Weir (who also made the movies “Witness”, “Dead Poets Society”, and “The Truman Show”, amongst others) really wanted to capture the setting as accurately as possible, even though the story is fictional. There were some really cool “making of/behind the scenes” featurettes on the physical releases. As far as Russell Crowe movies go, my favourites are probably the 4 movies in a row he did starting with “Gladiator”, “A Beautiful Mind”, “Master and Commander”, and “Cinderella Man”. Funnily enough, all of them are either based on true stories or fictional stories in real historical settings.

The weevil joke is perfect!! I was not expecting so much fun from this movie, I thought it was a super serious movie at first lol

For this reaction I always live for the set up and the delivery of the weevil joke! Knowing me I likely laughed way too much in the theater when I saw this. I do remember that it was opening day that I went. I love periodic pieces like this. I could easily go on about each and every scene that I love but I'll just say how this is one of my favorites. I'm so very happy you watched and enjoyed this.

If we had those channels, they weren't ones that my family watched lol Plus we didn't really watch movies so it's all a recipe to be skipped in my house growing up 🤣

I don't know about in Canada, but in the US the "Hornblower" movies were shown on the A&E cable channel, and the "Sharpe's" series was shown on PBS broadcast channels. For "Hornblower", the BBC built a full-size, working, replica 44-gun sailing razee frigate for Captain Pellew's HMS Indefatigable in addition to a couple prop/stunt ships to shoot up (Pellew was a real British ship captain who was well known in his time, and HMS Indefatigable a real ship). It became a tourist attraction in Sydney after they finished filming. Weber's "Honor Harrington" (published by Baen) is the best selling English-language sci-fi book series ever, and was quite a bit ahead of it's time when he first started writing them in the early 1990's, touching on issues that only made it to the mainstream media in the 2000's and 2010's. It is a serial, not episodic, so while each book tells a complete story, they also form an over-all larger story arc. It also proved that a sci-fi action series could be successful (at least with book readers) with a woman main character and women supporting characters.

I haven't heard of any of those books or tv series before, but it makes sense since it's BBC

I'm glad!! It was not at all what I could have anticipated, it was much better!!

I saw this in the theater when it first released. It's one of my favs. Really enjoyed your reaction to it!

All 3 were originally book series. Hornblower is also naval, while Sharpe is about infantry soldiers. All 3 are set during the Napoleonic wars of the 1790's-1810's. The Hornblower books are the oldest, written between 1937 and 1967. Cornwall wrote the "Sharpe's" books between 1981 and 2007 David Weber took a lot of influence from "Horatio Hornblower" for his "Honor Harrington" series of sci-fi books The BBC did a series of 8 made-for-TV (90 min) Horatio Hornblower movies starring Ioan Gruffudd between 1998 and 2003, starting with "Horatio Hornblower: The Duel" in 1998. The first 4 are based on the book "Mr. Midshipman Hornblower", the next two on "Lieutenant Hornblower", and the final 2 on "Hornblower and the Hotspur". The BBC did a series of 17 made-for TV (90 min) Sharpe's movies starring Sean Bean (Boromir from LotR) between 1993 and 2008, starting with "Sharpe's Rifles" in 1993.

Book series? TV series?

Verowak

Based on a series of books by Patrick O'Brian. I would recommend C. S. Forester's classic "Horatio Hornblower" series and Bernard Cornwall's "Sharpe's" series.
