The Matrix (1999)* FULL LENGTH REACTION

The visuals are just amazing!!

I need to watch more Wachowski movies to see if they're all a visual masterpiece as well 😍

Neo's journey has been great, and I think the Oracle scene is also perfect.  She is fantastic 😁

Trinity is also such an MVP, and I can't get over how much I love the "dodge this" scene/framing.

And of course, Hugo Weaving!!! His expressions are so astounding.  He could no say a single word and I would watch a whole movie of just him being expressive.

A mind boggling yet captivating and so rewarding to follow the story in this movie.  It felt a bit like an anime with some power ups.

The Matrix (1999)* FULL LENGTH REACTION

Comments

The Matrix sequels are definitely among the more interesting blockbusters you’ll ever see, even if you don’t like them. The Wachowskis weren’t interested in a by-the-numbers sequel, so the story goes in some pretty unexpected and divisive directions. Especially in light of today’s Disney IP conveyer belt, it’s easy to appreciate their ambition and bold choices. And also yes, V for Vendetta is the 5th of November one.

I'm super happy to hear that you like the other movies! The majority of the times, I just hear about the first one being amazing, and the rest being horrible. I'm glad to hear that there is love for the other ones. I remember the title "Clous Atlas" and wanting to see it, but I know nothing about it. I will purposely not look anything up so I go in blind when I can watch it. V for Vendetta is the 5th of November one I believe?

I don’t know how I missed this when you posted it, but I’m glad I saw it eventually. The Matrix is not just one of my all time favourite films, but possibly my favourite film series too. The sequels are deeply underrated, but I do understand why they don’t have quite the same broad appeal as the first one. The 4th is my favourite, which I consider a masterpiece on par with the first film, but 2 and 3 are both great films in their own right as well, both essentially telling one larger story. As for the Wachowskis, they are among my favourite filmmakers, and their most visually dazzling film Is easily Speed Racer, which is a kaleidoscopic live action cartoon, and an under-appreciated family friendly classic that was well ahead of its time. Cloud Atlas is another film of theirs that I would put on par with their very best. And if you want to see more Hugo Weaving, besides the Matrix sequels, the Wachowskis also wrote the film adaptation for the graphic novel V for Vendetta, which stars Hugo Weaving in the lead role. They originally were going to direct that film but ended up giving it to their friend James McTeigue, who was the assistant director on the Matrix films, to direct. He’s also in the Wachowskis’ Cloud Atlas which I mentioned before and highly recommend.

Razor Bikini

I definitely did not know this :D

Verowak

Hollywood often seen something perform very well, then decide to overuse it until everyone is so sick of it.

Verowak

OM gosh I forgot how good this movie is. :D

Garren Haskell

Sadly, once the technology was done, let's just say Hollywood overused it. Of course. It made it all the way to Shrek and many others. So, when the 2 and 3rd movies came out it was not WOW, and they just did okay job on explaining the deep philosophical raised in this movie. The other movies are good and worth watching, you probably just will not get the same emotion.

Daniel Looney

That must be so neat making a film that is the benchmark to determine the quality of DVD players. There really is no movie that can compare to the visuals

Verowak

That is a line that I've heard a lot and didn't know it was from a movie.

Verowak

It worked fine 😀

Verowak

Don't doubt yourself, James. It took a minute, but that was hilarious.

Richard Flores

Re: Your comments and amazement at the visuals... This movie came out in 1999. DVDs were first released in 1996/7, so DVD technology was still in its infancy. When this movie was released on DVD it was used as a benchmark to determining the quality of DVD players to be able to render those visual sequences.

PlaidGriffin

I should have written the joke out properly as it doesn’t work so well for anyone unfamiliar with it

James Hadden

She was a fairly minor character, but it devastated me when Switch died. When she said "Not like this..." it broke my heart.

John

Before. It introduces characters that appear in the third movie

John

I love just how much you've enjoyed this movie for so many years! I love how people can have an idea and a vision, then develop it and come out with a masterpiece like this. It's really mind blowing how amazing humans can be. All the characters are amazing, the actors did such a great job, and the visuals are really something else. Tank is just a joy and I'm so happy he survived!!

Verowak

🤣🤣 I love those "out of x types of people" They're always funny (if you get them of course)

Verowak

I love it when an actor is so connected to a role that you see him as that role immediately when they're in another film :D From Agent Smith to Elrond, such great roles!!

Verowak

Tank is an absolute gem! His emotions are infectious and he really seems like such a great person!!

Verowak

They peeled back the layers so expertly. Sure it was confusing as all hell in the beginning, but I love how we learned along with Neo! Is The Animatrix best watched before or after the third movie?

Verowak

So the first 2 sequels are 3.6 roentgen, not great not terrible 😁 I really don't like when it feels like a sequel is being forced. I'm curious about the sequels though, but it feels like those aren't really talked about, it's mostly the first Matrix only

Verowak

I'm not very good at picking up allegories or symbolism in art, since what I come up with has no symbolism but I love it when artists do share if there are any hidden meanings or not. I didn't know they both were/came out as trans, but if I think about it I think I remember they being referred to as the Wachowski brothers back then, and that dropped after a while. Now it makes sense why!

Verowak

He sure was! I had completely forgotten about that

Verowak

I think this was the first cinema experience that truly blew me away. The opening scene with Trinity had me just sat there, probably with my mouth open, in awe of what I was seeing, and it just got better from there. As much as I love this movie, I have seen it so many times over the years I was a little nervous of how I’d feel watching it again after a few years break. I should have kept the faith, it was so enjoyable watching it again with your reaction. The film makers deserve so much credit, I think it still looks as good as when it came out. Tank is my favourite secondary character (what a joyous personality), and then Mouse (does anyone else remember the actor from Home & Away back in the day?). I’m sure there were other things I wanted to mention but anyway, great reaction again, this was a really fun one, thanks.

James Hadden

Out of the 10 types of people, I see you’re one that does understand binary 😁 I have a fun Sunday afternoon ahead re-entering the Matrix

James Hadden

When I saw Hugo Weaving in LOTR shortly after "Matrix" I remember thinking "Oh, there's Agent Smith, why does he have braids?" 😂🙈 It took me a while to accept him as Elrond, because in my mind he was so connected with Agent Smith. Over the years I saw him in many movies and got to see what a terrific actor he is, but back then it threw me out of the story to see him in such a vastly different role.

silverarrow06

I love Tank in this, his reactions to stuff happening in the matrix were so powerful and gut wrenching when he had to watch his friends die. and then you get "believe it or not you sob you are still gonna burn" The actor Marcus Chong did an amazing job.

Ashley

It's fun watching someone see it for the first time. I've understood the film for so long it's fun watching someone go along the story for the first time until they realize that this world we're in right now IS the matrix. They did a great job of peeling the layers back a bit at a time, keeping the audience as confused as Neo was at the beginning. Also, "Neo" is obviously an anagram of "one." He knew on some level all along he was The One. If you enjoyed this, you will likely enjoy the 2 sequels as well. There's also an animated feature, The Animatrix, which introduces some characters that appear in the third film.

John

Every single time I watch LotR, when he says, "Welcome to Rivendell," my mind fills in the ", Mr. Anderson."

John

The other Matrix movies.. the first 2 sequels aren’t great but not terrible. The first one stands on its own really well, so they aren’t necessary, but they are still interesting. I actually really think the recent 4th film is much better than the other sequels though. A lot of it is pretty meta/commentary on being somewhat forced into making an unnecessary sequel though, haha.

RocktSurgeon

There are pretty strong arguments (at least in my opinion) that it works as a trans allegory. The Wachowski’s have said that it wasn’t intentionally written as one but it can definitely be interpreted with the themes. I think it would work as well for repressed/closeted sexualities or any other group that has to hide who they are/convince themself they are something else to fit in. Considering the Wachowskis both recognized they were/came out as trans later, it makes sense that things they were exploring/trying to understand themselves would make it even unintentionally into their work.

RocktSurgeon

I've realized while doing this reaction channel that I know a lot about movies, but haven't really seen them. It's mostly pop culture references that I know without actually having seen it. I think I'm just good at theory (knowing about the film industry) and less so in the practical aspect (seeing the movies) 🤣

Verowak

The action scenes are visually stunning!

Verowak

The red pill is a reference to both Alice in Wonderland and "Total Recall"

JAKH

Hugo Weaving was Red Skull in the first MCU "Captain America"

JAKH

And this is why everyone spent 12 hours of "Lord of the Rings" waiting for Elrond to call Aragorn "Missster Andersson"

JAKH

In the car before removing the navel spider, Switch calls Neo "Coppertop" because he is still a battery for the Machines, not a redhead.

JAKH

Nebuchadnezzer was the name of several kings of ancient Babylon

JAKH

Vero, this continues to blow me away: How can *you*, who seem so knowledgeable about the film industry, have never seen such a groundbreaking movie?!? Well, I'm just ecstatic that we get to enjoy it with you! 😁

Phil Stubblefield

I love this movie. The action scenes in particular I love rewatching and Neo is one of my favorite movie characters lol
