Jurassic Park (1993) | FULL LENGTH REACTION

Busy Wednesday today!!

Starting things off with... JURASSIC PARK!  I'm finally watching this epic movie, and I'm glad I did.

It hold up pretty damn well for it being made 30 years ago.  The more I watch Steven Spielberg movies, the more I realize just how great of a filmmaker he is.  I will probably have Patreon poll with him as a theme in the future.

I also didn't know this was based on a book, so colour me surprised for that.  The characters were interesting, the dinosaurs were amazing and those poor kids sure went through a lot of shit in a short amount of time.  I certainly hope the grandfather is never allowed to babysit the kids in the future ๐Ÿคฃ

The music was also epic, which should have been obvious since it's John Williams!

This was a proper movie of epic proportions and I do wish I had seen it as a kid, but at least I got to see it now!

Did you enjoy the other Jurassic Park/World movies?

Reminder that you need your own copy of the movie to watchalong, and that there is an extension that allows you to do Picture-in-Picture in case you are interested: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/picture-in-picture-extens/hkgfoiooedgoejojocmhlaklaeopbecg?hl=en

Jurassic Park (1993) | FULL LENGTH REACTION

Comments

ah yes! It's a totally different production... a whole different project. I think there is no way they could be comparable. A book exists in the mind of the reader... while a movie story is being fed into the viewer. Two different realities ๐Ÿ™‚ And I think the development of the brain is improved when a person is a reader. Hey I just watched the movie "M3GAN" (2022) and I liked it a lot! I wonder where I should comment it ๐Ÿ˜„

Mannygogou

That's the great thing about the books, they usually have a lot more information! I feel like trimming down the book to make a movie can be quite difficult sometimes, while trying to keep all the important and entertaining parts of the book present.

Verowak

I was thinking of recommending Andromeda Strain, maybe I did. But I wanted to make sure... so I watched a reaction of it actually and it worked well! They enjoyed it!

Mannygogou

I remember my older brother telling me about the book... I remember because he said something about the lysine contingency... I was like ?? They bring it up mysteriously in the movie but it had more prominence in the book. It is one of the essential amino acids which the body can't produce... it has to come from the diet.

Mannygogou

Steven Speilburg and George Lucas ruled the mid 70's with Jaws and Star Wars! The 80's with Indiana Jones and Back To The Futures! And more Star Wars! A couple of movies ahead of their time were Aliens trilogy Outer Space and The Abyss Under Water! Unfortunately it's not on digital it comes and goes! Oh and of course the Ghostbusters 1 & 2 and the new Ghostbusters Afterlife which is as good as the first! Looking forward to more Jurassic!๐Ÿ™

Johnny

It was definitely ahead of its time, I wonder if there are other movies that were ahead of their time ๐Ÿค” I've heard that a lot of people really like Jurassic World, so I'm interested to see how they are made. It will be neat to see how things change in 20-30 years between the two series I guess they would be called

Verowak

Great Reaction Verowak! Jurassic Park was definitely ahead of it's time! Took me awhile to watch the next two but they are decent! The three Jurassic Worlds movies where my favorite with Chris Pratt as the main character!

Johnny

The book was pretty good! Can recommend.

Garren Haskell

Yes, motion sickness, sadly. And since I watch these movies with a monitor that is somewhat close to me, it's worse.

Verowak

Been watching some of your reactions, just curious what the deal with movement/shaky cam stuff is? Motion sickness?

Chris

400 pages is a nice read though! Remembering things is tough, and there are so many books, all we know is that you were not thinking of A Song of Ice and Fire ๐Ÿคฃ I love it when books are adapted to the big screen, it gives more people a chance to know the story!

Verowak

I went back and checked and it's 400 pages in hardcover. Most of my books are packed away because I do all of my reading with a Kindle these days, so I don't know -- maybe the font in the hardcover edition is much larger. Now I'm wondering what book I was thinking about that was much shorter. It's rough getting old! Incidentally, one of Michael Crichton's first novels was "The Andromeda Strain", which was made in into a truly excellent film. It doesn't get reviewed often because of its age (1971), but I just watched a YouTube reaction the other day and it still holds the viewer in suspense and educates him/her/it at the same time. Many of his novels have been adapted for movies, most with success.

David Martin

I'm glad to hear that their minds were changed, the result is just fantastic!

Verowak

I can just imagine how mind blowing it was at the time, since it still looks good 30 years later. Practical effects are great, it's why I love Christopher Nolan since he prioritizes practical effects over CGI. I hear all my movie soundtracks from YT rabbit holes. I think I started with Hans Zimmer soundtrack compilation, then Ramin Djawadi, then John Williams, and it just doesn't stop there! After seeing the first movie, I can't really imagine how a sequel could be made that would be better than this one. It seems like peak everything!

Verowak

Then there is 0 excuse to not read it. I'll put it on my list!

Verowak

The book is very short.

David Martin

Originally, George Lucas had planned to use stop-motion for the dinosaurs, but two men in the budding CGI division of ILM created a demo of the T-rex that changed his and Spielberg's mind. Unmatched effects by anyone else for years.

David Martin

The thing to keep in mind is that when Jurassic Park came out, people were absolutely blown away by the effects. Even though CGI had been used in movies before (ex. Terminator 2), they'd never been used in this way where the images looked (almost) photoreal. Spielberg also relied heavily on practical effects, something that has been largely lost these days. So not only do the effects in JP hold up, but I honestly think they're more effective and look better than a lot of newer movies. And of course, John Williams's score has become so iconic that even people who have never seen the JP movies have likely heard its themes at sports ceremonies, awards shows, etc. As far as the sequels, your mileage will vary. But one thing that just about everyone agrees on is that the first one still remains the best. (I actually typed up a synopsis of all the sequels and how they compared with the original, but I realized that you might not want that if you planned on watching them eventually.)

WastedPo

Spoiler: It was so awesome!!!!!!! :D

Verowak

Not having read the book, I feel like the movie would be better than the book, since you can SEE the dinosours and hear their roars. Though now having seen the movie, going through the book would be nice to have the bonus scenes!

Verowak

Oh boy have I been looking forward to seeing what you thought of this movie ๐Ÿ˜„

Biggsy

The book is really good. Of course, there are many scenes in the book that aren't in the movie. Eventually they were able to use some of the other moments in the book in other Jurassic Park movies. But I think that this is one of the rare movies that is as good, or maybe better, than the book. It captures the spirit and the best aspects of the book and makes for a great popcorn movie.
