Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991) * FULL LENGTH REACTION

Hello everyone and happy Movie Reaction Wednesday!

I went into this not really knowing what to expect, but all I know is that I wasn't expecting this comedy!

The best way I can summarize my thoughts on this movie is that it is a ridiculous and fun movie.

The dramatic roles and scenes were bland, while the comedic ones shone.

If Alan Rickman wasn't in this, I'm sure this movie would have been terrible.  There's a reason Kevin Costner and Morgan Freeman don't do accents in their movies 😂

Turns out this isn't a comedy (at least based on IMDB), so colour me surprised.

For full-length reactions, you need your own copy to watch the episode.  Also know there is an extension that allows you to do Picture-in-Picture in case you are interested: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/picture-in-picture-extens/hkgfoiooedgoejojocmhlaklaeopbecg?hl=en

All I know, is that I'm not interested in seeing any more Kevin Costner movies 😐

Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991) * FULL LENGTH REACTION

Comments

Nice, if you want to check out his movies, start at the beginning "Clerks". He plays "Silent Bob" in the movie too. Made the movie with under $30k. It's a cult classic.

There are a few Kevin Smith movies that I would like to check out

Verowak

Alan Rickman was good in "Dogma" too. It's a comedy about religion, and he plays an angel. Big cast in that too, Matt Damon, Ben Afleck, Salma Hayek, Chris Rock.

That's the thing about movies, I never expect them to be historically accurate unless it's a documentary lol. I love thrillers so No Way Out seems up my alley!

Verowak

I normally love long movies, not so much for the reaction channel. It's a lot more stress to edit it down 😨 Perhaps once I can have an editor it'll be more likely lol I had planned to see Field of Dreams for the channel at some point since I always hear it mentioned but know nothing about it. As long as I don't need to know anything about whatever sport is in the movie, I'm good lol

Verowak

The Untouchables is a decent flick though not entirely accurate to history. Bull Durham is a classic. No Way Out is a good thriller if I remember correctly. (It’s been a while since I last saw it ) I liked The Postman too.

Verowak, "The Postman" has a lot of good things going for it. However, I would definitely put this lower on your "return to Costner" list. And if you do watch it, it'll help if you adjust your expectations going into it and know that it makes some missteps. That way you're more likely to be pleasantly surprised, rather than annoyed. (The biggest mistake, in my opinion, is the way they introduce the main female lead, which feels silly and affects the rest of the movie.) One thing that critics disliked about it was that it was 3 hours long. I actually LOVE that it's so long. It makes it feel like you're reading a book or watching a miniseries. I'd argue it could even stand to be longer, as some plot developments feel truncated. Unfortunately, since it was so disliked, it's probably never going to get a "director's cut." Also, FIELD OF DREAMS is definitely worth watching. It would make for a great channel reaction. Contrary to popular belief, I think it's less of a sports movie and more of a drama/fantasy. (When you consider the common tropes of most sports movies, one realizes that "Field of Dreams" doesn't really have any of them. It's kind of an odd duck in that way.)

The Postman sounds interesting. I looked it up and I do love a post-apocalyptic setting!

Verowak

Seems like I may just have to give him another chance, though in a non-medieval setting. I'm also not that into sports movies, so the ones you called out seem interesting, thank you! I've heard people mention Waterworld but I'm not sure why (perhaps because it was a box office bomb 😂)

Verowak

Wow. What a list. I would throw "Tin Cup" and "A Perfect World" on there as well. (Also, I personally think that "The Postman" is one of the most underrated movies of all time. But I know most consider it a turkey, so I wouldn't recommend Verowak actually watch it, as she's liable to get hung up on its flaws, which I admit it has.)

Medieval movies are definitely not Costner's forte. But, he has a number of what I consider to be fine, lead (and some supporting) actor performances in other movies (mostly early in his career in the 80s): * Silverado (1985) (supporting) * The Untouchables (1987) (lead) * No Way Out (1987) (lead) * Bull Durham (1988) (co-lead) * Field of Dreams (1989) (lead) * Dances with Wolves (1990) (lead) (already mentioned, but I added it here to show where he was in his career) * JFK (1991) (lead) * Waterworld (1995) (lead, huge box office bomb) * Thirteen Days (2000) (large supporting role)) And a bunch of others. But, mostly bit parts except for the show, Yellowstone, which is now ending next season due to backstate shenanigans. Of these, I'd like to call out The Untouchables, JFK, Thirteen Days, and No Way Out. I didn't call out Bull Durham or Field of Dreams because I'm not really into sports movies (with notable exceptions).

Ron

I also don't know what movies he's been in aside from Dances with Wolves, so that doesn't help lol Perhaps he's just not great at medieval settings

Verowak

It's a shame this experience turned you off to Costner. He's done some good movies. Unfortunately, this one particular movie is definitely the role he got the most flack for. (Critics roasted him for his lack of English accent.) Maybe in the future you can give Costner another chance (after some hypnosis to make you forget him here).
