Star Wars Episode 8 - The Last Jedi *FULL LENGTH*

Hi my dudes, it's Wednesday which means... STAR WARS EPISODE 8 time!

I will start out by saying that this movie has one of the worst scenes ever in Star Wars (Leia...), yet has one of the best scenes ever in Star Wars as well (LIGHT SPEED SHIP DESTRUCTION!!!).  It has some good highs, and a few terrible lows but overall I liked it!

Again, visually the sequels are amazing!  I do like how the Force is being used in different ways, it's neat to see and something new and exciting.

As I'm editing, I'm noticing a lot of my expressions and how there are parts that I dislike more than I remember disliking but, to me, the good outweigh the bad.  It's similar how in Episode 2, there were some low lows, but some really great highs as well.  I don't expect Star Wars movies to be 100% great, but as long as the scales tip towards my overall enjoyment instead of disdain, then it's a win!

I've warmed up to some characters (Kylo Ren), and dislike others more (Finn), but that's ok because I still like all these characters more than Jar Jar 😂

I am extremely curious to see how Episode 9 will be, it seems like this is the make or break movie for the sequels.  I'm worried yet going in, hoping to have fun with the movie.

Do you have a favorite character in the sequels?

Mine is obviously Chewie, but from the new characters, I would say that I like Rey the most.  I'm hoping that Kylo Ren's character development continues in the next movie and can't wait to see if he is like Vader (there's still good in him) or not.

Friendly reminder that for this type of content, you do need your own copy of the movie to watch along.  There is also an extension that allows you to do Picture-in-Picture in case you are interested: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/picture-in-picture-extens/hkgfoiooedgoejojocmhlaklaeopbecg?hl=en

I appreciate all of you!

Well that's just silly. Disney seems to want to create their own Star Wars from the Star Wars franchise. That makes Disney look terrible for the movies. That's very unfortunate they went that route, it would have been great to have Luke as a sort of non-senile Yoda to Rey.

I thought there would be no love or even tolerance for these movies, so I'm so happy to see that people were able to enjoy this movie!! It definitely has flaws but so does all the other Star Wars movies 😂 There is so much stuff! I picked up a lot of things during editing, so I think the next time I watch it, I'll pick up more. Luke's character is not a make or break deal for me, and it's nice to hear that you didn't have a problem either. I'm really along for the ride and mostly content with seeing more in the Universe lol Losing his nephew and seeing the growing darkness feels like it would affect Luke a lot. Feeling like a complete failure is not great, and I feel as we age, if we haven't dealt with failure before, we don't know how. Failure being the main thing makes sense! I didn't think of it like that, but there is so much failure and mistakes in this movie, which is good to see. It makes the characters more related than being perfect. My problem with Leia using the Force was that it felt like she used it for way too long. I think if she wasn't so far and it felt like a struggle a bit, I would have been fine with it. Poe definitely needed a stun, and it was nice to see. I get his character, but I also feel like he should respect the leadership since that's how it's been structured all this time. He's still a good character, but he has flaws :D I love Rey and Chewie together!! She's definitely a survivor, and I'm super curious about her parents. I'm not satisfied with what we got this movie, so I'm hoping there's more to it 😂 I would have loved to have seen Snoke be evil and powerful. He just seemed like some dude, though he used the force lightning. I noticed that Kylo Ren got the idea from the spinning lightsaber while editing! Rey catching the lightsaber was a pretty epic scene!! And then her throwing the lightsaber to Kylo Ren and he activates it for a second to kill the guard holding him, too!! Holdo maneuver, nice! I didn't know that's what it's called. I love that it was done. It looked amazing and I could feel the fear of Hux and company when they realized just what she was doing! It's a bummer that Luke died, but it makes sense. I love how he said the same thing he said to Rey "Amazing. Every word of what you just said was wrong." I'm glad Luke died the way he did instead of just wasting away on the island. The damn iron!! It got me good, I really thought it was Boba Fett's ship 🤣 I loved it!!

As a fan from the beginning I absolutely loved this film! Yes, it’s not without flaws but for me the flaws were mostly minor. Like from a military stand point the bombers shouldn’t have been so bunched up for obvious reasons. The jokes about Hux from Poe were a little forced (ha!) but it was a stalling tactic and for that I could let it slide. BB8’s head-butt was silly but whatever. This movie is really quite dense. It took me multiple viewings to catch all of the callbacks and details. There are a lot! I too had no problem with jaded Luke. His shame was palpable and at first he did everything he could to drive Rey away. I appreciated his disdain for the failures of the Jedi. His viewpoint is unique compared to the others. Leia was always a strong leader. Obi-wan was a fully trained Jedi Master. Luke struggled with his fears in the early movies and while he may have found his strength after the fall of the Empire it would take losing his nephew to the dark side to break him. The primary theme of this movie is, as Yoda mentioned, failure. There are many. Poe fails to follow Leia’s command which leads to the loss of their bombers. Finn starts off only interested in Rey. He’s not yet invested into the resistance. Rose is great. She’s smart and while used to being out of the spotlight she steps up to help Finn and Poe. But they fail to get the right code breaker and unfortunately put their trust in DJ. Poe also fails to appreciate his role and questions Holdo. Holdo as an Admiral had no reason to clue in Poe on her plans. Like you said, need to know. This is big thing in the military. So another failure to trust his leadership. Leia uses the force! Maybe it’s because I’ve been invested in this world for over 40 years but I absolutely loved seeing her save herself. All she had to do was pull herself to the ship which shouldn’t have been too much of a stretch. I don’t care what people think. I loved it! I also liked her stunning Poe. He needed it. I also love Rey in this. She’s such a strong survivor. She knows how to take care of herself. I also really like how she respects Chewie. And yes, she can understand him. One of my favorite scenes is when she tells Chewie to give a message to Finn. He says something and she agrees. Just this little exchange shows she appreciates him. The death of Snoke was great and totally unexpected. It’s in the nature of the dark side for the apprentice to want to kill the master. Kylo Ren got the idea by seeing his lightsaber spinning on the floor. And that shot of the lightsaber being caught by Rey… with the music… Oof! Gets me every time! The Holdo maneuver. People complain about this too but it could only be accomplished by a very large ship. And it was a last ditch move to save the resistance. It had to be done. Luke’s death. A lot of people fail to realize Luke redeemed his failures by confronting Ben the way he did. He too gave his life for the resistance. There are so many little details I could go on and on. Finally, I agree this was a beautifully shot Star Wars movie. Rian Johnson and his DP really outdid themselves with this. I’m so happy that you still enjoyed it. (You’re also one of the few reactors to catch the iron joke 😆)

On Disney and Luke. It’s easy enough to answer and does not involve spoilers. If you do research on Disney’s thought process behind the sequels it becomes apparent that key people at Disney wanted Luke’s impact on the Sequel Era to be as toned down as much as possible. Bob Iger made a point of telling George Lucas before the Force Awakens that they were going their own way with the story treatments and not to be surprised. Disney wanted their own new characters to be revered the same way as Han, Luke, and Leia were for the OT. With the trio to be gone of course so the IP could move on. For this to happen they thought it was key to tone down Luke’s potential impact on the story. Basically, Disney was afraid that by making Luke true to Luke of the OT; a powerful Jedi master, not unlike Yoda (which many fans were hoping for since that was the Luke of Star Wars Legends) it would suppress the fans adopting the sequel trilogy characters. This is why I believe Luke is relegated to a cameo in the Force Awakens and a hermit in the Last Jedi. There was an hour-long interview with Rian Johnson released along with the DVD version of the movie. He talks at length about how in writing the story for the Last Jedi he did not want Luke to “take over” . He didn’t want Luke to take his “laser sword” and face down the First Order. Before watching this, I thought it was odd that Luke was nowhere in the books/comics leading up to the movie release. I was hoping it was going to be a lead up to a nice payoff. This interview clued me in to research into Disney’s motivations here.

The only thing that would have made this movie better was if it also had the seismic charges from Episode 2! It looked and sounded amazing then, so I can just imagine how much more epic it would have been in the sequels 😀 After having watched the movie and thought about it, I completely see how Luke's character choices were terrible. Like you said, if it wasn't a Star Wars story, it would have been fine, but the fact that Luke changed so much and needed a slap in the face from Rey is a bit odd. I also don't remember the originals too much (since I wasn't SUPER into Star Wars immediately). It's not a great way for the studios to think at all, they shouldn't make it for the current generation and throw away the previous ones, but from a viewer, I think the sequels will get more love in years to come (though I would have preferred for them to be loved by everyone, of course). I personally dislike Disney taking over Star Wars and Marvel, and feel like they aren't listening to fans and just assuming what people want to see. It's the "Am I out of touch?" meme perfectly! I'm very curious what you mean by they wanted him to not be the Luke of the OT, and I like to assume you'll let me know after the next movie? Mark Hamill did great with what he was given and you can see he takes his job as an actor seriously. He disagreed with the character choices but still brought their vision to life! Rose actress got the same treatment as Ahmed and Jake Lloyd?! That's terrible and, just like the other two, completely ridiculous. Have people not learned to stop hating actors for roles?! Clearly not. I hate it when fans do that, it's just nonsense. I'm not really sure how ranks work in any form of military or movie that has a military. I usually just know the 1 person in charge, and that's it. To me it felt like Poe just wanted to know things when he shouldn't, but maybe his position would have made sense for him to be aware of the plan. It's also silly to not tell people of a plan that you will enact in less than a day. DJ character just feels like the writers didn't know how to get them out of the cell, and just placed him there with the key to open it. Felt very stupid. I just wasn't that keen on that whole sideplot of Finn and Rose getting the codebreaker. I feel like it added too much time to a movie that already had so much going on :/ I thought Phasma would have played a bigger role. Her death felt pretty cheap, too. And why doesn't everyone have armor like hers?! It just deflects blaster shots?! Thinking about it, I'm currently assuming that Snoke wanted Kylo Ben to kill him, sort of like the Emperor wanted Luke to kill him in Episode 6. That's one of two logical reason to me, the other being that the Emperor is still alive since he was just thrown down a well in Episode 6, and Snoke was a stand-in type dude. If it's neither of these, I may be a bit miffed, but perhaps they thought of something great 😓 Oh a cameo!! I didn't know that one, but that is awesome. It's interesting how amazing Rogue One was and it came out 1 year before The Last Jedi. It's weird to me that they created such different movies, one that the majority of the fans love, and one that, it seems like the majority of fans, dislike. I love hearing about what others think of the movies, so no need to be sorry, I quite enjoyed reading what you wrote! (Though I did leave a long comment to your long comment, so I hope you don't mind lol) I'm VERY curious to see Rise of the Skywalker and am looking forward to the visuals and amazing scenes they do!

Overall, I thought The Last Jedi was a spectacular film in terms of the visual and audio effects. The story line, if it weren't for a Star Wars film, is entertaining albeit a bit too long. I enjoyed it personally but at the same time remain deeply disappointed in the story choices. For many, this movie is deeply flawed. The simple answer is to say so "oh those Star Wars fans are fickle, they hated on the Prequels too and they weren't bad". "We have a new generation of fans now; they will love it." “Years from now, these movies will be loved.” These are dangerous attitudes for a studio to have. As a result, this film has created deep divisions among the fandom. Disney was completely dismissive of negative fan reactions until Solo, the first 'bomb' of a Star Wars film at the box office (which was actively boycotted among its many problems). People change over the years, it's completely logical. But if you look closely at the major characters, only Luke really changes. There is no setup outside of the one-line reference in the Force Awakens. This is a fandom where some had been waiting for 30 years to see Luke Skywalker in action. This is a boy turned into a hero. One who believed the best in people, who never, even for a second would have a thought to kill his best student, let alone son of his beloved sister, no matter how much 'darkness' was there. Only to be lectured by "a girl who had never held a lightsaber" (I like Rey actually). This is the core sentiment I think to those who don't like Luke of the Last Jedi. I was disappointed that Disney (Rian Johnson specifically) wanted to spring this on the fans so to “subvert expectations”. Disney wanted Luke dead and they especially wanted him not to be the Luke of the OT for reasons I will leave aside for now. They grossly underestimated the potential negative reaction that Mark Hamill warned them about on many occasions. To me, I thought Mark Hamill did an outstanding job in the movie. I think for many this is completely lost. Is it possible to love the performance but dislike what the character has become, blue milk and all? I like Rose, way too preachy for my tastes but ok. Unfortunately, like Jake Lloyd (Anakin in The Phantom Menace) and Ahmed Best (Jar-Jar) the "community" has really shown her a lot of hate as many didn't like her at all. Not a fan of Admiral Holdo really. It's kind of petty to be so dismissive to your top commander. If Poe was really to learn the lesson Leia was trying to teach him about leadership sending him off to a corner to sulk is not the way to do it. There is really no good reason for not sharing her plan with the transports. Unless you want to use it as a vehicle to do the Rose/Finn/DJ side story. Poe’s character deserved better than that, I think. I loved DJ but uhm, if he could open the cell doors that easily how is he still there when Finn and Rose arrive? The Rey-Wren Force connection thing I really liked. Probably the best thing in the movie. Brienne of Tarth, I mean Captain Phasma, was sadly killed off here, when they advertised for the Force Awakens everyone thought she’d have a much bigger role. They could have kept her for episode 9 no? Killing Snoke was a major mistake I thought. As you began to think, am I watching the last episode by mistake? Closing all the angles into the next movie was a conscious choice by the writer-director. Doing that of course subverts interest in the next movie. Fun fact, at the battle of Crait, when the soldier inspects the ground to say “salt” and looks to his buddy on his right we see Garreth Edwards, director of Rouge One as one of his buddy soldiers. Nice cameo, I think. Sorry for the long reaction to a reaction 😊. Just some random thoughts. I am glad you liked the movie and look forward to your take on The Rise of Skywalker.

Being 50/50 on it makes perfect sense, and I can see a lot of people seeing it that way. It's exactly like you said, the people who grew up with the originals, for the most part, bash the prequels and sequels and revere the originals. A lot of people who grew up with the Prequels love them and we are finally hearing their voices, so they are looked in a better light, though the sequels still get hate. In 10-20 years, I feel like the fandom will see the movies in a better light because those who grew up with the sequels will have more of a voice. I would love to see how Luke changed from Episode 6 to Episode 8, it could help with people's view of him but I doubt we'll get anything else as explanation, which is unfortunate. It really feels like a Game of Thrones type situation where the source material isn't written out so character decisions had to be made, but they're not explained well which doesn't sit well with the majority. I feel like the bombers are the only thing they have left. The Resistance's forces feels like it's barely hanging on, so I imagine they have limited ships. The bombers should have been flying further apart though since 1 accident took out 3 of them. Snoke was... yeah. A huge disappointment but it made me feel like he may not be the BBEG. I'm hoping next movie will shed some light on things lol The guards were neat, I'm glad they were able to fight off Rey and Ben for a bit!! Finn and Rose sideplot was something that I just didn't care for. For a movie that felt long, this made it even worse.

Leaving the cinema feeling disappointed is never a good thing. Hopefully some of the TV series have been up your alley though

I can't begin to describe how disappointed I felt when leaving the cinema. The lightspeed thing was the worst part for me.

I personally don't actually hate this film, very 50/50 on it. As it's own film isolated from every other slice of Star Wars media it's a pretty good film but once you bring in the whole galaxy alot of the aspects introduced in this just don't work really well. But I'll never hate on people for liking these movies as there's people who grew up with these like I did with the Prequals which also got alot of hate from original trilogy fans. Only reason the Prequel are so beloved today is because us Prequal fans grew up and were able to voice or views on these movies online becoming the voice of the fandom. The Sequel fans will grow up and replace us so they'll have a voice online which will no doubt showcase the hidden love for these movies. Luke was the problem alot of people had with this film even Mark Hamill himself struggled to see this has his Luke Skywalker which naturally makes sense it's a VERY different view on Luke the whole "Never meet you're hero's" concept. One of those things like Ben's Affleck Batman where it would've worked much better if we saw these characters develop into what we see on screen. Showcase Luke as a Jedi Master overseeing his Jedi Temple and the fall of Ben Solo which leads to the state we see him in now. Novels and comics do explore this but I personally would love more Jedi Master Luke in his Prime like we see in Heir to the Empire. The opening also gets alot of hate with those heavily slow moving bombers that are easy to hit and filled with explosives that can easily cause a chain reaction if flown in close formation. They could've easily used Y Wing bombers like we see in Clone Wars but I guess the destroyed New Republic Fleet from the Force Awakens had all the Y Wings or something. Supreme Leader Snoke was pretty disappointing for fans expecting him to be someone important but I'll leave it at that as we may get more information in the next film. His The Elite Praetorian Guards were pretty cool though, love seeing Guards outfitted to take on Force Users just like the Royal Guards from Revenge of the Sith and Return of the Jedi. The whole Finn And Rose side story felt very out of place but the setting was cool just felt like a random TV filler episode in the middle of a film. Overall I I don't late these movies I'm just not too interested in this time period. Both Force Awakens and Last Jedi are set back to back so 34 ABY while Rise of Skywalker is set in 35 ABY so a very tiny part of the overall history of the galaxy compared to the Original Trilogy and more so the Prequals. The Mandalorian so far has had more to offer so I'm more interested in the post Return of the Jedi period and how they could build up to the Sequel movies and explain how the First Order came to power, How did the New Republic not see the signs of a rising power etc.
