Rogue One - A Star Wars Story *FULL LENGTH REACTION

PLEASE DO NOT POST SPOILERS IN THE COMMENTS
Anything that has happened in Clone Wars, or will happen in the sequels or will happen in any of the TV series is a spoiler.

It's Wednesday my dudes!

This movie was a very pleasant addition to the Star Wars universe!!  I am a bit bummed that there was no scrolling text, but that's ok.  By the end of the movie everything made sense as to why the scrolling text wasn't needed.

This movie has the best comedy in any Star Wars movie I've seen so far in the form of K-2SO (though every time I think of the name, I just want to say K2SO4.. damn you chemistry!)

The story was captivating, and extremely enjoyable, things just got better and better throughout the movie.

Expect another Clone Wars episode or 2 in the next few days since I will be a bit ahead of schedule with what I need to get done this week!

I'm making decent progress with my puzzle when I can manage to find time to work on it, aside from that I'm looking into more hobbies.

A reminder that this is a watch along style and for that you need your own copy of the movie (all Star Wars content except for the Holiday special is available on Disney+)

Have a nice rest of your week and I'll be letting everyone know when the Premiere for Saturday is scheduled on YouTube for Rogue One!

Rogue One - A Star Wars Story *FULL LENGTH REACTION

Comments

I did not notice that, thank you! I feel like there are SO many details that I've missed and that I'll have to rewatch all the movies again. How horrible 😁

Verowak

Not sure if you noticed, but they made an effort to focus on Red 5 being destroyed in the battle. This frees up the Red 5 callsign that Luke flew as in ep 4

Raztaban

True, you basically have to be a newborn to be accepted to be trained :D

Verowak

The actor for Baze barely spoke English? That's actually quite remarkable, I would never have guessed

Verowak

The dialogue for the film is really so amazing (at least compared to the other Star Wars movies). I was going in expecting the same kind of dialogue but was pleasantly surprised :D

Verowak

Yoda probably would have said he was too old 😂

Biggsy

I think that was the latest Star Wars series that Disney has made, so I'm hoping that future ones will be just as good then!

Verowak

That would make a lot of sense yeah, and I think he would have been a pretty damn amazing Jedi

Verowak

If the Jedi were still around , I’m sure Chirrut would have been identified early in his •adolescence and would have trained to be a Jedi.

Bxpolo

I think you'll love the Andor series, When you get to it. It's some of my favorite Star Wars content

Ben

Don't feel bad, I didn't understand that bit at first either. Some questionable dialogue there, but the rest of the film's dialogue more than makes up for it.

Ben

I think that's a great way of looking at it. Everyone has a purpose, and it's very visible with Chirrut since he quite literally just walks across a battlefield to flip the master switch, then he dies.

Verowak

It does have such a different feel than the other Star Wars movies, and I am all for it! I feel like every Star Wars movie/tv series should be made in this way. I've heard that Andor is great, which is amazing since I've heard mixed feelings about most of the other Star Wars series.

Verowak

Definitely one of my favorites too! Ahh, ok I didn't know if Rogue Two was at the end of Episode 4 when Luke destroys the Death Star or Episode 5. Thank you! Yay Wobani is intentional!! I felt like it had to be

Verowak

Yeah I had completely misunderstood. When I was editing it I realized he was talking about Obi-Wan and that the she was Leia. I for some reason thought "she" meant a Jedi that we find out about in the Clone Wars. But thank you for clarifying :D

Verowak

It's Premiering on Saturday. I'm not fast enough at editing to be able to do early access for those videos yet :(

Verowak

One big reason I ended up loving this movie so much is it lines up so well with what I grew up understanding the Force to be, from the movies and reading. If you've read the Wheel of Time books, I've always seen it as similar to that, a guiding force of "fate" balancing things to be as they should for generally protecting life. The balance of good and evil Yoda mentions. It's most explained in the books, but aside from Jedi there are "Force Sensitive" people (Chirrut, to a lesser extent probably Jyn and Han Solo). Jedi/Sith are those strong enough/with skill with the Force to alter it/alter fate, vs 'sensitives' who are essentially key fulcrums that have the ability to swing huge parts of what happens in the universe with minor actions but aren't able to use The Force as a power directly. The Force acts as a guide to most/everyone but especially to Force sensitives (and they are sometimes more aware of it, at least as a sense of pull to do things). Everyone has a role they need to play to keep balance going in the movie, and until their role is fulfilled (K2 sealing the door and telling them how to transmit, Chirrut pulling the lever to connect communications, Jyn/Cassian sending the message).. they are guided/pulled along and 'protected' to accomplish what they are meant to. And then the protection falls away and they succumb to the circumstances with odds vastly against them. Just my interpretation, but for me its a very meaningful way to look at it all.

Other random bits- The actor playing Baze (big gun) barely spoke english, so his son translated the script for him. The actor playing Chirrut (blind monk) was Donnie Yen, a great/well known martial arts actor. Star Destroyers crew are ~40k, so the collison is 80k imperials. Throughout Star Wars, they use posh British accents for Imperials. The more posh/british a character's accent, generally the more ties they have to comfortable life in the Empire.

RocktSurgeon

It's ended up my favorite Star Wars movie, though it's admittedly very different. Really, it's a different genre.. more of a war movie than fantasy like the main line movies. The Andor show is... not just great Star Wars. They managed to make a genuinely great show, period, that is set in Star Wars. It's much more nuanced than most of Star Wars, with noone really being solidly good (and much of the 'bad guys' being much more empathetic than you'd expect). It tells Cassian Andor's back story, and also includes a lot of back story for Mon Mothma and some for Saw Guererra. Plus there is a droid that is nearly as well done as K2, if for different reasons. K2/Alan Tudyk of Firefly fame, on stilts- the improvised slap scene where they are being arrested- Tudyk accidentally actually slapped Diego Luna (Andor) in the take they used, and you can see Luna holding back a grin/surprise!

RocktSurgeon

Do you have the cut version with video and sound?

Milos

Every time I hear K2SO I jump to the chemical compound.. which is fitting I guess with how biting his sarcasm tends to be! Though I mostly think of sulfuric acid first. For what it's worth, K2SO4 is a salt of both a strong acid (sulphuric acid) and strong base.

RocktSurgeon

It's not a scout ship per se, Rogue Squadron is an elite fighter squadron and as of this movie it's assumed their squadron name is in honor of the ship/crew here. In what used to be the "Expanded Universe"/is now "Legends" (books set in the Star Wars Universe) there is a great series of books about Rogue Squadron. Rogue One would be the squadron leader, with other numbers being the other members of the fighter squadron.

RocktSurgeon

One of my favorite Star Wars Moves this was :) Rouge Two, if no one has mentioned before, is the scout ship early in The Empire Strikes Back that finds Han and Luke in the ice world of Hoth the next morning after Han rescued Luke from the elements. The pilot says something like 'I've found them, repeat, I've found them" Wobani is intentional, you picked up that I slapped myself for missing that when I saw it in the theater The Force is with me and I am one with the Force.

Kelvar Jadewalker

Its no spoiler the Jedi that Bail Organa speaks of.. he was talking about Obi-Wan Kenobi a jedi that been in hiding since the Jedi purged. The she he was talking about was Leia. Who was on her way to find Kenobi in the being of episode 4. But got captured and she sent R2D2. I hope this help

William Fortner

I really love how this is literally right before Episode 4! I loved the ending where Vader is going on the ships looking for the plans. Whenever I rewatch Episode 4, I'll watch this one right before so I can smoothly transition to the original trilogy. It's so fun seeing characters we've seen before! I'm looking forward to watching Andor, especially since I'm guessing it'll be darker seeing as he's ok with killing people pretty easily.

Verowak

Star Wars day :D Throughout my reaction I call him K2 because I knew I would add a 4 if I said K-2SO lol Imprisoning them in prison... my gosh K2, you are missing an improvisational subroutine or something!! Enjoy Star Wars day with your popcorn. My week will go well after tonight (finishing editing)!!

Verowak

Yay for Star Wars day 🥳🥳🥳 Got my popcorn ready 😃 OMG yes to K2SO4! I'm so glad someone else thinks of that with their name! Such a fun character and a lot of their lines are regularly used amongst my friendship group like "imprisoning them in prison". I hope your week is going well 😃

Biggsy

"It is a period of civil war. Rebel spaceships, striking from a hidden base, have won their first victory against the evil Galactic Empire. During the battle, Rebel spies managed to steal secret plans to the Empire's ultimate weapon, the DEATH STAR an armored space station with enough power to destroy an entire planet." - A New Hopes Opening Crawl. Love Rogue One it captures the practical look of the original trilogy but adds a dark and brutal tone describe as a war movie by the director. This movie also features my favourite space battle with the Battle Of Scarif. Fun details but the cockpit shots of Gold squadron (Y Wing bombers) and Red Squadron (X Wings) was actually old unused footage of the Gold and Red Squadron pilots from A New Hope the female pilot who says "Look at the size of that thing" was never used A New Hope so they added her to this movie which is really cool. Greig Fraser is the cinematographer for this film who also worked on The Batman and Dune two films with amazing cinematography as well. Can't recall if he worked on the Star Wars shows but both Mandalorina and more so Andor both have that very gritty used look and feel to them just like Rogue One. Characters: The person who gave the plans to Princess Leia at the end was Raymus Antilles. Raymus Antilles should up at the end of of the Revenge of the Sith, Antilles was onboard the Tantive IV a Alderaan Cruiser owned by her step father Bail Organa who was the guy who rescued to Yoda and should up a few times throughout the Prequals ending with him and his wife holding Baby Leia as they're new child. Antilles is close with the Organa family so it makes sense that he would be onboard this same ship with 19 year old Leia. Bail Organa shows up in this film who we saw in Revenge of the Sith like I mentioned above and also showed up in Cat and Mouse the episode of Clone Wars you watched. Mon Mothma the woman in the white robe would've shown up in Revenge of the Sith but her scene was removed, maybe she's in the background of a scene but at the time of The Clone Wars she was a Republic Senator who openly opposed Supreme Chancellor Palpatine's policies. We also have a few background characters who will appear in A New Hope which is why they're in this film so everything's all greatly connected really well. Saw Gerrera the main who released Jyn Erso is a character who first apperinceed in an animated Star Wars show making him the first Animated Character to show up in Live Action who wasn't planned on being introduced to the big screen. Boba Fett showed up in the Holiday Special cartoon part but he was planned to show up in Empire Strikes Back. Grand Moff Tarkin the character who may look a little uncanny is a famous character from A New Hope who was played by the late Peter Cushing who past away in 1994. As the character past away they created a CGI version of him using an actor as a stand in while covering his face with the CGI recreation of Peter Cushings face. This is the same with Princess Leia as well at the end of the film both character are pretty much fake but it does the job. We saw Moff Tarkin in Revage of the Sith standing beside Vader and the Emperor overlooking the incomplete Death Star. And of course a bunch of side characters who you'll see more of later in A New Hope and other films just too many to mention. Ships: The Hammerhead Corvette that rams into the Imperial Star Destroyer is heavily inspired by the Hammerhead-class cruiser which first appeared in the amazing Knights of the Old Republic video game in 2002 which was set around 3900 years before the events of the original movies used by the Republic. Pretty interesting that there using a design based on a 4000 year old ship but hey i love Knights of the Old Republic is one of my favourite games and i adore the Old Republic setting so I'm not complaining. If the design still works then I can see them using the design for 4000 years just introducing new models and ships. We also have the MC75 Cruiser used by The Mon Calamari admiral Raddus who led the assault on Scarif. Shuttle SW-0608 which we saw Rogue One use to land on Scarif along with their squadron of rebellion solders. Delta-class T-3c Shuttle which was used by Krennic and his Deathtrooper. This is an older model than the iconic Lambda-class shuttle which we see in Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. TIE Striker It was specifically designed by a research group on Scarif to protect high-security Imperial bases in an atmosphere. Pretty sure it cannot travel into space which makes it very similar to a ship used by the rebels in Empire Strikes Back. New Troopers: Coastal defender stormtrooper on Scarif also known as Shoretroopers who you'll find on more tropical planets introduced in this movie. We also see tank troopers who are riding in the new Imperial combat assault tank introduced yet again in this movie both the trooper design and the tank. These are all just normal Stormtroopers outfitted for different terrain and roles. The Black Armoured Stormtroopers are called Death Troopers who were an elite variant of the Galactic Empire's stormtroopers designed for stealth, espionage and lethality. These guys were actually the first image we saw of the movie as they were teased before the trailer came out. There very cool and stood around 6′5″ tall. Land Vehicles: We also see a turbo tank the successor to the Juggernaut tank from Revenge of the Sith used by the Republic. This tank also shows up in the Clone Wars and some video games. That interesting ship you see Rogue One in is called a U Wing created for this movie and is still used in alot of Star Wars media. Overall Rogue One has created the most Disney content in terms of Vehicles and ships along with droids and weapons seconded by Mandalorian. Stuff introduced in Rogue One can be seen in Video games, Comic's, Books, and other TV shows like Mandalorian and Star Wars Rebels. Overall thoughts: Overall I adore this film and it's prequal series Andor which for me has been the best Star Wars show to date 2nded by Mandalorian and Clone Wars. Andor is very different to you're more mainstream Star Wars so it's not for everyone and I know alot of people who just prefer Mandalorian to Andor and I love that how Star Wars can now have a range of shows for everyone from drama's to westerns to war films etc. i do think the 2nd half makes this film but I myself don't mind the built up etc. I do wish we got to know more about this characters but like I said that's what Andor is doing set 5 years before Rogue One it will follow these 5 years and showcase how everything came together and then end right from Rogue One starts just how Rogue One ends right before A New Hope.
