*FULL LENGTH REACTION* for Star Wars Episode 4 - A New Hope

Hello one and all!!

This is the beginning of a MASSIVE franchise, and I hope you all enjoy it!  I've learned a lot from this movie (like what Banthar in WoW is named after), and I'm really excited to see our two droid friends in the future!

Quick note that usually I upload the edited version on Saturdays, but I may not have it ready until Sunday this time around.

For this type of content you need your own copy to watch along (it's on Disney+ for those who are looking for it).

I do have a Discord if you're interested in chatting or asking questions or whatever (if you get lost of overwhelmed, don't be shy to @ me (Verowak) in Discord and I will gladly help out <3)   https://discord.gg/mU6yeR72Eg

Happy New Year everyone!! <3

*FULL LENGTH REACTION* for Star Wars Episode 4 - A New Hope

Making this film must have been terrifying because Lucas was sure it would flop. Never would he have thought it would start the epic franchise that it became!!

Ah, the movie that sparked a franchise! It’s easy to forget how hard it was to even get this film made. Everyone thought it would flop. You can definitely tell it was fairly low budget. Lukas poured a lot of his own money into this, started ILM (Industrial Light and Magic) today considered the best VFX company in the business, spawned Pixar and is responsible for just about every great special effects in most movies.

I'll have to give it a gander if I can find it! I think there's something about Topher Grace editing Episodes 1-3 into a single movie or something too that I want to see at some point! $40m from the bet?! That's crazy, I don't know anything about CE3K but I have heard it mentioned a fair bit. I feel like this type of movie really is one that is such a different experience when seen on the big screen, due to the visuals and audio. Do you have a favorite sci fi franchise?

There is a fan version of the original trilogy which preserves (as much as possible) the theatrical version of the movie. (cough) Harmy's Despecialized Edition (/cough). The versions that you're seeing on D+ are the latest revision of the special edition movies. While they're interesting, the new and revised scenes always jump out at me. --- Anyway, some remembrances and footnotes of my thoughts after seeing SW in 77: * Originally, the movie was just, "Star Wars" and not "Star Wars: Episode IV A A New Hope". Lucas didn't expect that the movie would be a success which is why he took off to Hawaii. He wanted to avoid the crushing feeling of seeing no lines and empty theatres. In fact, he was so confident in the failure of SW that he made bet with Spielberg who was making Close Encounters of the Third Kind (CE3K) at the time. They traded 2.5% cuts of their respective movies. So far, Lucas has paid out $40m to Spielberg on this bet. * It wasn't until SW was green lit for a sequel that it was announced that SW was really was the first episode of a middle *trilogy* of *trilogies* (9 episodes). (Lucas later revised this down to 6 episodes.) * This movie was miraculous in the visually and sonically. You really have to see it on the biggest screen possible and the best sound system. I was fortunate enough to see it twice in the (now-closed) Coronet theater on Geary in San Francisco which showed it in 70mm 6 track dolby stereo. The lines were literally around the block. * I was already a sci fi fan (Star Trek, Lost in Space, various UFO movies, and 2001: A Space Odyssey). (All from watching them on TV.) SW cemented my love of the genre and forever shaped the direction of my career and interests. After all, here I am 46 years later watching this very same movie with someone over a wire on a computer that is vastly more powerful than anything I could have dreamt of back in the day. Hell, with GPT3, it *almost* feels like it can think and dream on its own. * If you haven't seen CE3K, please do. It's definitely one of Spielberg's best.

That's one thing I've been debating for Star Wars specifically, a moderator to check comments to delete incase some people give spoilers.

Watching a movie in a "premiere" fashion, that is watching it with you during a live stream, sounds fun but I am concerned about people placing spoilers in the comments and ruining the story for you. I suppose you could get a moderator to delete spoiler comments before you see them though I'm not sure if that's possible on YouTube. Anyway great reaction and I look forward to Episode V however you decide to watch it. πŸ‘πŸ˜Š

Oh really? That's very unfortunate, I do wish the originals were kept instead of remastered or special editions that add/change things. After I finish the first trilogy I'll try to remember to look at a list of the changes from the originals, just to get an idea of the differences. I like seeing movies how they were made. Thanks for the info!

I hope you enjoy it!!!

Okay, so one thing that you should be aware of (that a lot of people forget these days) is the versions you're watching are not the same as the ones that a generation fell in love with when they were released. In the late 90's George Lucas released the "special editions." A lot of scenes were re-edited. The entire color palette was remastered (with some unfortunate overblown elements introduced with the lighting). And "updated" CGI special effects were added. Unfortunately, what was marketed at the time as the "special editions" soon became the "only" editions, since Lucas pulled all the original versions off the market. In my opinion, the special editions make the movies worse in multiple areas, including the CGI effects which have aged more poorly than the original practical effects. (See the CGI Jabba the Hutt scene in "A New Hope" which was never in the original cut of the movie.) I think for the most part, A New Hope and especially Empire Strikes Back aren't too worse off with the "updates." However, the finale of the trilogy, "Return of the Jedi" suffers a lot, especially in the closing of the movie when the pacing is thrown WAY off by CGI inserts from Lucas trying to clumsily tie the movie in with his (then new) prequel trilogy. Despite all this weird revisionist history, I hope you enjoy.

Looking forward to watching it tonight!
