Dispatches from the Studio: March 2022

Hello Dear Patrons,

I hope this dispatch finds you well. February ended up being quite the busy month for me and March is promising to be even more so, with my in-person workshops beginning to ramp up again now that, at least in New Mexico, the cold weather seems to be behind us.

The studio is quiet, after the completion of multiple large projects with rather quick deadlines.

The first of which was cover art submission for the scientific journal Cell Systems. The paper had to do with cell communication and I pitched the idea of a tangled telephone pole as a metaphor for the process they were researching.

The authors of this particular paper all seemed very impressed with the work and it was a lot of fun to come up with an idea like this and see it work out so well.

The second piece was for another article about cells, this time dealing with damaged tissue in the heart.

This one was a challenge, mostly due to the client who seemed to not know what he wanted and was obtuse when it came to excepting my artistic advice for how to arrange the composition. I was also limited in my depictions of the various cells because I had to match how they appeared in other images throughout the paper, which was of a far lower caliber than what I'd have preferred.

For those of you who don't keep up with Paleo news, T. rex has been in the headlines lately. I was playing with a running pose for Rexie a few days before the news came out and with all the buzz I decided to actually take it to final. I've been going back and forth with color and exploring new painting processes.

As promised I've been working up to regularly producing videos which includes recoding them in a way that is easy to post here. Some of the practice vids are available on social media.

This last one is going to be the final color version I think. Still have to at the highlights and shadows to it.

Stay tuned as I continue to play with the video production. I'm really hesitating but so far the small clips I've been putting on social media have been received well, so that's encouraging.

Thank you all for the support

all the best,

~rob
