So I set out to draw an Elk..

and somehow I ended up with a few pages of people riding extinct megafauna. I know, not supring.

Well, I needed to draw an animal for this other project of mine, more on that later, and so I started messing around in photoshop. Sometimes it's easier for me to get a lot down quickly if I work digitally. Anyway I've had this itch to draw people riding animals. and not just horses and elk but all kinds of things.

I'm really happy with the archer on the terror bird, Titanis walleri. People with dinosaurs (and pterosaurs) is fun an all that but I'm such a purist in my thinking of them that it pitches me so far into the realm of impossibility that I can't enjoy the posibile "what if this could happen" that I find myself really enjoying about fantasy, like in ancient times, there were Mammoths on the planet at the same time the Egyptians had built the pyramids. I want to explore that world in my fantasy art. Ancient cultures and extinct megafauna and push the envelope a bit. I feel like terror birds fit in there really nicely.

Also Dinos and people together have been done to death so if I do it they might as well be pinups because I'm just not going to be invested in that story. Like I said, I'm a purist when it comes to the Mesozoic.

A comic that really explores this idea well is CONQUEST, a french comic (but you can find it in english) Written by Sylvain Runberg and art by Francois Miville-Deschenes. That's where I got the idea for Ms. Impractical on the big elk.

Anyway I think you can expect to see more of the terror bird-rider as soon as I finish doing some actual Science Illustration. stay in your lane Rob.

Oh by the way i did end up drawing that elk. Its still a WIP:
