Neon Genesis Evangelion 1x24: "The Final Messenger" // Reaction and Discussion

Comments

My favorite thing about Evangelion is that it ultimately doesn't mean any single thing. I've had very different interpretations and understandings of it's entirety at different points of my life. I have seen so many different interpretations and understandings from other people. All of it is valid. None of it is valid. Evangelion is divorced completely from it's author. But at the same time, it's a direct reflection of it's creator, spread across decades. Some people poop on the Rebuild movies, but I genuinely believe they are integral to the complete meta text of what Evangelion is.

The final two episodes are significant to the whole experience. Don't take the bad advice of skipping into End of Evangelion. Hell, I'd even suggest watching Death and Rebirth (well, I suppose just Death (True)²) It's a recap of the entire series, but it's not "just" a recap of the entire series - it's edited in a way that really sort of re-contextualizes the entire thing before leading into End Of.

I think the simplest explanation for the whole Lilith/Adam thing is that Kaworu just assumed Gendo only had a small part of Adam's body in him, while the full body was down in Terminal Dogma. Also, small detail a lot of people miss, when Kaworu says his famous "born to meet you line" you can see that he actually has tears in his eyes. It's unfortunate that his backstory isnt really delved into in the main series, but the few hints we do get suggest he had a very rough and isolated upbringing. Tbh its no surprise he fell for Shinji just as quickly as Shinji did for him lol

they really should watch the episodes first then do the movie.

Are you guys watching EOE next or going straight into ep 25, 26??

Definitely getting a lot of schadenfreude while watching you two, only because I was in the same situation. Definitely don't skip the movies, EoE and the rebuilds add so much to the physical lore. Don't listen to anyone who says they are an alternate or remake, they are fools and dead wrong.

This is my favorite episode to watch people react to. So much going on. Also, regarding Adam's body existing within Gendo and Kaworu's reaction to seeing Lilith -- no worries, the fandom's been talking about that one for decades.

It's been a while since I've seen End of Evangelion, but I still recommend the movie based on the discussion. Existentialism vs Structuralism - In short, Asuka believed in self-determination for worth and identity (Existentialism), but it's actually the structures that make the determination (i.e., Nerv). For the last two episodes, remember the Hedgehog's dilemma.

End of Evangelion is coming closer I can remember how much I was SHOCKED by that movie XD

With the Rebuilds being full on sequels, one of their questions will get answered for sure. I just hope they take a small break before diving into 1.0 and the rest of the films after End Of Evangelion to not get burnt out.

I feel so sorry for the next two... I really hope they watch the movies, EVA 1.0, etc because they alternate paths(similar to Fate/Stay series).
