Shinji taking time to recall the fight is actually very realistically done. It takes time for our brains to solidify memories, especially ones of intense situations. About two restful sleep cycles, to be exact.
I work as a security guard, and should I be involved in a traumatizing situation, my initial report is given orally to another officer, since I would likely have difficulty writing things down. This initial report may contain details that will be lost over time, but is generally very inaccurate. The next day I would write my personal report based purely on what I remember. After two sleep cycles my memory of the incident is at the clearest it will ever be, and I would write my final report, using the previous two reports, camera footage, ect. to supplement it and get the facts straight.

This episode already shows you that one of the biggest strengths of NGE is the way it's directed. The story, writing, animation and characterisation are stellar on their own, but it's the direction of Anno Hideaki that ties it all together and elevates it to the status of a legendary, timeless classic.

I always feel shaken by the final scene of Ep. 2 -- Misato giving Shinji some praise, a 'you did good' little note, so familiar from other Shōnen action stories... but it doesn't work, because Shinji still looks terrified by what happened to him.
As in PMMM there are many scenes with Madoka crying, NGE has many scenes with Shinji screaming. This is only the first one, and he already looks damaged by it, despite Misato's effort to give him some well-deserved validation.
