No, not Al being compared to a box!
This is basically at this point that Brotherhood diverged from the 2003 adaptation (who had to start doing its own thing once it caught up to the released manga chapters at the time). I'd also say that it's the opening of my favourite part of FMA - the read through tome 5 to 15 remains one of my best experience ever.

The strongest thing this story has is something I've defined as a "trope" called the "forbidden knowledge" trope. And there's quite a few episodes that truly bring it to the forefront, such as this one. To give you an example and to keep it spoiler-free: We know that Bradley is a homunculus and Al doesn't. Plenty of stories do this, but FMA does it on a meta level. These alchemists that seek power encounter "forbidden knowledge" on their quest, and we learn "the truth" before they do. And that is OUR "forbidden knowledge." This all sounds very silly, but will make complete sense later. And that's what really sells this story. That your natural curiosity as a viewer gets intertwined with the thirst for "forbidden knowledge" other characters in the story you're dissecting are searching for.
