When I first watched Made in Abyss S1, the movie wasn't even out. I have waited, and it has been worth it every time.
What I love about it is the complexity of the emotions it creates. The only other show that makes me feel as complicated is Mushoku Tensei, and you guys already watch that.
So let me try to make an oddball recommendation: The Magicians. It's on netflix, based on books, and is complicated in ways, dark in others, and full of messy complex emotions like these other shows.

Seconding Heavenly Delusion as it has a lot of the exploration/mystery aspect that MiA has

After Made in Abyss the only anime that helps me fill in the void is "Madoka Magica"

"Tomorrow" is one of my favorites from season 1, severely underrated IMHO

I agree with the side stories thing, which speaking of which, there are 4 short eps of "amrulks daily life" and there is a short of some prushka sidestory thing which the name escapes me. Someone recommended it already, but, i have rewatched made in abyss an uncountable amounts of time (you should probably rewatch it at least twice) with that being said, I very much enjoy Houseki no Kuni.

Anna and Ben, I'm so glad you two enjoyed MIA as much as I did, Thanks for sharing a bit of your souls with us throughout the series. Please check out the english translations to the opening and closing songs to have a better understanding of them. I'm so glad you enjoyed the show and really really related to it.

What a beautiful finale, Made in Abyss is such a special show, it hits you hard emotionally, but still leaves you feeling uplifted.
The OST truly elevates each scene, the anime studio and Kevin Penkin knocked this season out of the park!
As a fan, I think you both would love the series "Eighty-Six" as a replacement to this show.

Thank you so much Anna and Ben. I really enjoyed listening to your analysis every episode. Made in Abyss has been my favourite anime since I first watched it back in 2017. The only series that even comes close in my opinion is Eighty Six (86). It can sort of be described as a Sci-fi AoT, but in my opinion is even more enjoyable and emotional. I hope you'll consider it at some point in the near future.

Yes, Ben! There are stories that are better in a purely written and/or drawn form, but Made in Abyss isn't one of them! The soundtrack is a masterpiece in its own right, and the voice actors (Especially Faputa's, Reg's, Nanachi's and Bondrewd's, in my opinion) did an absolutely phenomenal job. Not only did Kinema Citrus (the animation studio) breathe life into an endlessly intriguing world, it elevated it to a masterpiece.
While most anime adaptations are either bad or perfectly passable retellings, Made in Abyss's adaptation is without a doubt the definitive version of a masterfully crafted story. I don't think Tsukushi could be happier with the way his story has been handled. Sidenote: the anime also does a good job of including just the right amount of the uncomfortable stuff that's in the manga.
And to Anna: I'm so glad you've been so open-minded and willing to subject yourself to the kinds of media that you used to always avoid (very relatable btw)! Much of the most beautiful art, isn't pleasant or otherwise comforting, and it would've been such a shame for someone like you, who is so very good at dissecting and appreciating art, to never have gotten the opportunity to do that with works like MiA.
Much like actually going down the abyss, following the story that MiA tells, is a rollercoaster ride of a journey that's filled to the brim with both curses AND blessings. This season scarred us, but also gave us a beautifully cathartic and hope-inspiring ending that leaves us, just like Riko, wanting to descend further.
Thank you guys for taking us along for your ride.

This is totally out of the realm of shows/anime but if you really loved Made in Abyss, I would highly recommend Outer Wilds (the game). Even if it's just something to look at/play in your off time. There's something really magical about Outer Wilds that made me have very similar feelings to when I was watching Made in Abyss. Amazing sound design/music, insane lore, and a completely unique game premise. Both though hold a special place in my heart.

Made in abyss is such a special anime. It holds a very special place in my heart. Its one of those you don't want even to compare to other animes, just sitting alone in a special place. I have 2 of those, Re:Zero and Made in Abyss. Frieren is making its way up there too.

Welp, it's been a journey. Made in Abyss is a special show, and I'm so grateful to have experienced it through your reactions to it. Now we can all endure the possibly long wait for a S3. By the way, since y'all wondered what other shows MIA enjoyers love, I'd personally recommend March Comes in Like a Lion. Very different show, but the artistry on display made me feel similar emotions I felt while watching MIA.

theres another show, Girls Last Tour, that is sometimes compared to made in abyss because its also in the hypothetical genre of 'cute blobs in stressful situations.'
it has a completely different energy than MiA though, it leans towards a cozy, slice of life and philosophical exploration of the end of the world, where as MiA is intense with a stronger narrative and the characters find hope even when suffering in the abyss.
a sense of mystery and underlying sadness exist in both shows in various ways.
both shows are in my top 5 of all time.

As a fellow Made in Abyss enjoyer, I'd recommend:
-Houseki no Kuni
-Girls' Last Tour
-Shinsekai Yori
I'd put Houseki up there with Made in Abyss, honestly.

Unfortunately we are all going to have to wait. The anime is basically caught up to the manga, so we have to wait for the manga to get further, for the anime to have another season.

There really aren't many shows like MiA, it truly stands on its own. As a MiA fan, I'd love to see you guys react to "Baccano!" then "Durarara!" lots of mystery and strange things going on in those worlds and some of my favorite anime along with MiA.

i was lucky enough to start watching just as season 2 was airing and then waited a further 6 months before reading the manga, there is about halfish of a season written currently but it is just as amazing as all the rest of the show so probably 2-3 years off a season 3 but dont worry its confirmed that they will adapt it when its done

I'd be hard pressed to describe the extent to which Made in Abyss has left its mark on me. I've watched the entire series 3 times, I've read the manga up to the last volume released, and I regularly listen to Kevin Penkin's OST (which is a fucking masterpiece).
Made in Abyss is quite unique among anime. There's so much to say and analyze about this universe, the world-building, the many meanings and interpretations, the singularity of this dichotomy between cute design and particularly dark themes.
And yes, Made In Abyss is far too unknown for its insane quality (but it does have a solid fanbase). I think it's the cute design that gives the -false- impression that it's a show for kids. There's also some controversy, because it doesn't shy away from being disturbing, because it deals with sexual issues sometimes, and because it's about children.
To give a little hope: the studio Kinema Citrus have confirmed the anime sequel. The story already has 2 more volumes (season 1 adapts the first 3 volumes). An additional volume is scheduled for release in summer 2024. In my opinion, the anime sequel will be released in 2025 (probably late 2025, maybe early 2026). You're not ready. The sequel is fascinating!
Season 1 showed one facet of Made In Abyss. Season 2 was a new facet. Season 3 will be yet another facet :).

So, the manga is ongoing, but it's not far ahead of this finale. They have stated that there will be a continuation, and i believe they want to adapt it to the end. The team at Kinema Citrus is clearly very dedicated to this project, but it's probably at least 2 or 3 years out. The latest chapters do not lend themselves to a movie so it's definitely a full season as well.

So I’m a manga reader. It is still on going and it doesn’t skip a beat the wait will be worth it. Based on how long the studio takes to animate and what is needed to make a 3 rd season it probably won’t be out till 2026 maybe 2027 but ashituski said he would try to release more frequently so who knows.

I recommend watching Marulk-chan no Nichijou (Marulk's Daily Life) and Papa to Issho (Together with Papa). Both of which are cute extras that focus on Marulk and Prusha respectively.

Glad to have more fans of made in abyss that know how amazing and how much of a masterpiece this series is along with me. I don't want this show to be super popular. Mainstream shows tend to be seen as overrated and the vast amount of fans tend to ruin the shows with their stupid takes and harsh judgement. At the same time though this series deserves so much more love and attention. Its insanely unique with everything it does and it does everything so well. You join the rest of us in waiting for the long excruciating wait for the next season lol

I think it was when the barrier and the entire place protecting them came down and stopped working MA ended up disappearing. MA got to go out peacefully along with Kaja.

Really have enjoyed you guys watching this show! I wish you had spent more time discussing what happened in the episode but I really liked some of your interpretations around Faputa understanding love/sacrifice.

Also, there's only 6 chapters out from where season 2 ended. Akihito Tsukushi writes very slow but he is def still writing it. He's very active on Twitter.

In case nobody's mentioned it, Pakkoyan the blue haired girl/hollow and Vueko were lovers. There's a scene that didn't make it into the show where you see Vueko and Pakkoyan... Under the sheets together, right after that Irumyuui tells Vueko she smells like "mating with lots of people" I don't know why they cut it out considering the context gives more of an emotional hit to Pakkoyan throwing Vueko down the stairs.

This will definitely get a continuation. It’s just that the manga is REALLY slow going, one chapter takes ages for the mangaka to draw and release because he puts so much care and love into it. We just have to wait until there is enough content to be animated for season 3.

I heard the people who was in charge of the anime production and other stuff were trying to speed up the release of the manga and not try to wait too long before the next season can be released. If that was true on one end it is a good thing because you can't take forever to continue a series because the more time that passes by the more people lose interest in the show but on the other end its not good for the potential quality of the story and rushing the author more than usual. Unless the author already has everything planned out and knows how he is going to do the entire rest of the series then it comes down to being able to get the work done faster.

Damn and so it comes to an end. hopefully, it won't be too long for next season but at the rate the mangas coming out it's not looking good folks lol.
