There is not only one but many reasons why this Anime deserved to be at top in season 1 (considering it was against Aot Season 3 and Demon slayer). Season 2 just takes the cake, it is without a doubt anime of the year for me.
The relationship between Einar and Thorfinn is really what we need. There is seriously almost nothing in this show that is average, everything from the shots, animation, music placement and just the theme of this season. So happy for you guys and that you are loving it so far.

Kudos to Ben for recognizing the dream sequence as the same sequence from on top of the Normani fort. Many reactors don't see it. The writing, the pacing, framing of the shots, the music, the emotional voice acting, the sound design, and much more hep make Vinland Saga S2 pretty dare close to perfect.
I love the moment when Thorfin finally says "Thank you" to Einar. He really is a "baby" and lack many of the social cues that he would have developed if he had stayed with his family. Bunch of warriors are not the best "social" examples.

Yeah the way facial expressions are drawn in this is unlike anything I've ever seen. Combine that with some of the most emotional voice acting and music I've ever heard (and of course just flawless writing) and it's really one of the most lovingly made and moving pieces of art I've ever encountered.

18:30 great point by Ben and I feel pretty much the same way (as someone who has watched live action most of the time until transitioning to anime almost exclusively).

To loosely quote Murphy Napier: “Vinland Saga arc 1 is a story of those IN war. Arc 2 is a story of those left behind after it’s all over”
This anime doesn’t cut ANYTHING from the manga (in fact they cut NOTHING and only ADD great scenes that even the manga author applauded). You can feel the genuine passion behind this team. If you guys end up loving this series, while you totally get the full story via the anime and I’m fully satisfied with it, the hyper detailed art in the manga is SO GOOD. Given that Yukimura (the author) only had to focus on panels rather than fluid motion. Many consider him a top 5 artist in manga.
There’s a reason why Vinland Saga is considered one of the “big 3” of seinen manga (seinen is the adult demographic of manga, shonen is the mid to late teen demographic which holds manga/shows like AoT/JJK/MHA/Naruto/DBZ/ etc.) the others being Berserk and Vagabond.
It genuinely is impactful. It’s thesis and themes are always within arms reach. And Thorfinn’s story is just so beautiful.

I'm glad you're enjoying the pacing of these first couple of episodes, and I'm not sure if I've mentioned this from before, but this pacing allows us to connect with the characters as they go through their everyday lives where some of the powerful moments in this season will be felt with greater impact. There's a lot of people who have criticized the slow pacing in this season, and have stopped watching Vinland Saga all together, but they are missing the point behind this story and do not appreciate good writing.
Also, just as the manga artist for Vinland Saga, Makoto Yukimura, had written Askeladd's character specifically for Thorfinn in season 1, he had written Einar's character specifically for Thorfinn in this season. Can't really say much more than that without spoiling the show, but you guys are very quick to pick up on the interaction between those two.

I'll say it again. Season 2 of Vinland Saga, in my opinion, is the best season of anime ever made. This anime, especially this season, is genuinely life changing.
