I'd like to clarify something prushka said because it can misconstrued as bondrewd doing something that completely ruins his character. Bondrewd gave prushka a biology lesson using an animal. Prushka asked about its member and bondrewd called it an instrument that allows it to become a father. Prushka incorrectly called it a papa pole and bondrewd didn't bother to correct her.

She wasnt born like that. She was involved in an accident, and was hit by the 5th layer curse, and hard enough to be mentally broken. Bondrewd brought her back from that, no wonder she loves him so much...

I wanna quote the starting and ending lines of the credits song. Starting with: "I sighed that I lost something precious. I know that there may never be an end to the price that we pay for our dreams. It can never be repaid" And ends with: "And the past will live forever as we strive towards our future. The sadness never disappears. It just becomes a part of us, deep inside" These 2 lines, I feel hit right at the heart of the messaging behind Made in abyss. About human desire. About the parts of yourself that you give up to chase that desire. About the joy and pain, the burden that you then hold on to through life, becoming part of you.

@brakthir Weren't you the one who called me an idiot without asking questions about my comment when i wasn't even talking to you? You're not one to talk lmao it just seems like you have poor social skills since you just resort to insults/name calling right away when ppl aren't even talking to your ass.

I hoped you would talk more about Prushkas backstory. How she looked like she was born mentally ill but Bondrew made her normal again and raised her to be a cheerful girl.

You're missing the depth of the concepts we're talking about here.
what you're talking about is a question of point of view and morality. There's also the notion of moral balance.
Killing one person to save another, for example. When you do that, you're aware of the act and it's your reason that strikes the balance. I killed => it's wrong => but it was to save others => it's right, a good cause that justifies my act. But doing something wrong for what you think is a good cause is not the point at all.
Bondrewd isn't in this situation at all. For several reasons (time spent in the Abyss, how he got his white whistle, and the use of the Zoaholic) Bondrewd has lost some of his humanity. His consciousness has dissipated. Bondrewd doesn't act badly thinking he's doing good, Bondrewd has absolutely no notion of good and evil. He doesn't justify his actions with his cause...he sees no problem with his actions. It's radically different.
To make the point a little bigger: Is a shark attacking a human evil? Can you be bad when you don't even know what it means?
The issue is complex, which makes Bondrewd a complex character...at once horrifying in his actions, driven by laudable intentions, and absolutely terrifying in his moral detachment.

Coming from a manga reader who wasn't impressed by the 6th layer arc at all, Season 2 of the anime seriously touched my soul. Something about the artistry of the animation team, Kevin Penkin's music and the voice actor's performances all melded together and sold the theme of the story so hard that it completely eclipsed my initial experience. If you thought the movie was blunt with its themes, you aren't ready for Season 2's doubling down on everything you've come to know about the Abyss!

"Doing evil things in the name of the greater good still makes you evil, does that matter that he feels bad/doesn't feel anything about it"
Are you evil when you do something evil without knowing it's evil? Does a bad act define a bad being, or just a bad act ?
If you think the answer is simple that's you don't understand the scope of the question (There are many books on the subject, on the link between actions and consciousness). This question surrounds the Bondrewd character, he was written about this complexity on purpose. That's one of the reasons why he's so terrifying.

What a fu... good movie! The visuals, the score, the writting...Prushka :'(. There is sooooo much to say about Bondrewd (are you evil when you're even no longer aware of what evil is?) .
Speaking of why make it into a movie? It was just the best choice for the narrative structure. The 5th layer is a 2-volume arc. It was a perfect fit for a movie. And the next arc is 5 volumes long. It takes up the whole of season 2. If volumes 4 and 5 (5th layer arc) had been the start of season 2, the following arc would have been cut between season 2 and 3.
It was the perfect choice.
About the "papa pole" thing...Actually, during a dissection lesson Prushka awkwardly calls it that in reference to the organ's function. The pole that serves to become a papa is what she means (and not that she's seen Bondrewd's penis. That said, Japanese people have a strong bathing culture, including in the family).
One of the figures that appear when Reg is in destruction-mode opposite Bondrewd should ring a bell ;).
Next week is going to be VERY interesting! You're not ready for season 2, which I think is even better. And with one of my favorite characters all time :).
Made In Abyss is such a singular show. A fascinating masterpiece. One of those that has left a deep impression on me.

I love the call out that the show prepares you for trauma, in the same way that a protagonist gets stronger as you go is a really good observation. It started with the... corpse weeper, I think, which mimicked the cries of a dying cave raider, evolved to the orb piercer, then Mitty, then Prushka, and... (insert S2 spoilers)

A couple of interesting things to pay attention to if you guys ever decide to re-watch this movie; the track that plays during the final battle in the chasm is called "the rumble of scientific thriumph". And it is a childrens choir that loses a couple of voices as they assend back up..
Also if you squint real hard and think about it, he made both his daughters wish and that of her friends come true, they get to go on an adventure together. They needed their own white whistle to advance to the next layer. There is no way to continue on deeper down the abyss without losing something. (some of) your humanity, (some of) your body. In the end it might even strip everything except for your longing(wishes) and experiences.
As you guys may have alluded to slightly in the discussion. Some of what he did was prepare the group for that reality of the abyss.. The abyss takes some part of you, and you get longing(wishes) and experiences in return.
Excuse my rambling, but this show just makes me want to talk about the feelings it elicits

Lots of people here have talked about it already so I won't get into it, but I think Bondrewd is the most fascinating antagonist in fiction.
Something that the movie doesn't address for some reason, but when Reg says "it felt like there were multiple 'someone's' inside me" the manga panel actually heavily implies that one of those "someone's" is Lyza. What that means I have no idea but I can only assume it was cut because it was too difficult of a thing to introduce at that point in the movie (what with everything else intense going on)

Well dont worry, meat suitcase is the worst this series gets. Season two has some dark stuff, but nothing even CLOSE to that. Dawn of the deep soul messed me up for a few weeks just thinking about that.
I think meat suit case is possibly the worst first hand experience in a story ive ever had. The stuff that ainz people do in overlord are far far worse, but you never actually see the really bad stuff.

@Brakthir You sound like an annoying chronic reddit user. Let the guy be. Nothing wrong with understanding the character and explaining his actions and supporting certain aspects of his character. You can clarify he is still a monstrous villain at the end of the day but still support sides of his character that aren't necessarily simply "villainous"

@Brakthir He isn't a piece of shit, though. I'll give you examples of villains/antagonists who are actually despicable and pure evil, such as:
- Frieza (Dragon Ball)
- Shinji (Fate Series)
- Kirei Kotomine (Fate Series)
- Shou Tucker (FMAB)
- Dio (Jojo's)
- Kid Buu (Dragon Ball)
All of them, in one way or another, committed horrible acts against other people, driven by their selfish desires or twisted satisfaction, as they likely derived pleasure from it. If you paid attention, you'd notice that this description doesn't fit Bondrewd and how he was portrayed in the movie.
It says a lot when Bondrewd used an entire orphanage and still manages to be a better father than Shou Tucker himself.
Let me ask you something: What makes someone evil? Is it a desire to cause harm, or is it simply the absence of goodness? If evil arises from the absence of good, then is a machine evil for lacking ethical boundaries? Because that's what Bondrewd is; they explicitly mentioned in the film that he is no longer human.

Something that is shown a bit in the movie but maybe wasn't conveyed very clearly at times is that the Umbra Hands is in fact technically not all Bondrewd. They're actual individual delvers that work under Bondrewd, as shown when him talking to Gueira or with the delver up in the Flower of Fortitude field when "he wasn't available" for the difficulties of traversing consciousness through the layers. As all the Umbra Hands have connected themselves to the Zoaholic, Bondrewd have access to either take over their body as himself, let them move as themselves or lastly, put them in a sort of auto mode. Which is why the henchmen such as the one leading Nanachi and Riko before the blackout could seem a bit dullard at times.
Poor Gueira lost his life in what I assume would be one such auto mode in the Stingerhead nest. Where one can see him bloat up and get eaten by several of them. So not everything was really a layer of illusion for Prushka.
Good to see you enjoyed the movie! I really love this show and look forward to more of it with you entering season 2~

Another cool part about this movie is when its being explained that the stingerheads are the ultimate predator of the 5th layer but the camera viewpoint is circling bondrewd, hinting that the ultimate predator of the 5th layer is actually bondrewd.

@Brakthir Again, you're very good at misunderstanding things. Almost noneone agrees with bondrewds way of seeing things/actions. Did it ever cross your mind that bondrewd was just a white whistle like the others? he most definitely was, but bondrewd is long gone thanks to the zoaholic, he gave it all to the abyss and in making the abyss more friendly to other cave raiders that he lost everything. You're just one of those "Big science man bad" and can't comprehend that it's not even him doing these things. Also, people can write an essay if they want to or explain why he does the things he does (Just want to clarify noneone here is justifying it but it's stuck in your head for some weird reason). If the conversation doesn't suit you, then don't join it? or close your eyes? lmao

Nothing worse than Bondrewd apologizers lmao. Listen, you're allowed to like him as a monstrous villain with an amazingly complex and complicated characterization but you lose most sane people when you start to try and support, explain and make excuses for his actions. Just let him be a complicated monstrous piece of shit. You don't need to write an essay to justify him.

In regards to the papa pole. That is a name prushka mistakenly called it during a disection/biology lesson, bondrewd didn't bother to correct it. I feel the need to correct it because the other implication ruins bondrewds character completely.

Bondrewd is one of the best villains/characters I've ever seen!
I apologize for the long text, but I would greatly appreciate it if you 2 read this please! 🙏
A lot of people I see basically try to portray Bondrewd to be an evil piece of shit that likes to experiment on kids for the fun of it which is far from true.
To clarify what Bondrewd did was morally wrong, I literally cried at the end of the movie with what happened to Prushka. However I was still able to not let my emotions take over and not jump to conclusions about Bondrewd and who he is as a character.
He loved all the kids that he took down with him to the 5th layer of the abyss. If he was truly evil why would he even care to remember every single name & dream of each child he experimented on? If he was truly your generic "Evil Mad Scientist" he wouldn't have cared about any of that.
The mistake that a lot of people make with Bondrewd is that they try to compare/associate him with the qualities of that of a human being. Bondrewd long ago lost his humanity when he sacrificed his own body into a White Whistle turning him into a cold hearted machine all in for the sake of progress. However he still understands human emotions and the importance of them especially that of "Love" and he reciprocates them to all the orphan children. He's able to turn on & off his emotions like that of a switch which allows for him to conduct such horrific experiments.
You may say thats a contradiction BUT THATS THE WHOLE POINT OF HIS CHARACTER! He's literally a living/walking contradiction & paradox where 2 things shouldn't exist at the same time. He's a genuinely compassionate/kind man and a loving father while at the same time a cold hearted machine capable of despicable acts all in the pursuit of progress and knowledge nor for selfish gain and all for the sake of a brighter future for humanity.
His mask is also symbolic of his character as its split into 2 half's by the purple light down the middle:
- One half being the loving father
- And the other half being the cold hearted machine
He's literally meant to be a character we will truly never understand/comprehend as he's someone who's "TRANSCENDED" his own humanity into something else completely different due to the Abyss. They literally named an OST just for him that has "TRANSCENDANCE" in it that plays when he's on screen. He literally symbolizes the main themes of "Lovecraftian Horror" aka "Cosmic Horror" which are:
"Fear Of The Unknown"
"Detachment & Isolation"
"The Fragility Of Humanity/Sanity"
Thats just to name a few. The Abyss also symbolizes these themes which parallels Bondrewds character.
As crazy as this sounds Bondrewd also parallels Riko in certain ways, like for example: When Riko took Reg to her room while he was asleep and quiet literally performed experiments on him to try and figure him out by:
- Trying to light his hair on fire to see if its flammable.
- Tried to pierce his body with a drill.
- Probed his butthole with a measuring stick etc.
Bondrewd also performed experiments on Reg while he was asleep, but on a much worse scale.
They're both deeply fascinated by the Abyss and the knowledge surrounding it. However, in Bondrewd's case he is more than willing to sacrifice all of himself and the people around him, especially those who he loves the most to attain more knowledge/advance forward while Riko will do everything in her power to try and reach the same goal without sacrificing the people she cares about along her journey. It's really quite tragic for Bondrewd, because in the end he losses everything and is alone while Riko still has everything she wanted and thats why Bondrewd lost to them.
A lot of people somehow forget that the experiment of him gaining
"The Blessing" aka turning into a hollow as we saw in the movie can ONLY WORK based off genuine real LOVE and it has to work BOTH WAYS, it couldn't only be the children that loved him and he didn't feel the same way back or else the experiment would have never worked.
With Prushka he actually loved her more than any of the other children because when Bondrewd found her she was in critical condition due to experiencing the curse of the 5th layer. He took a big interest in her and actually admired her. That is because no matter what pain & suffering she went through she still pushed forward and survived through to until the end. He nursed Prushka to full health MULTIPLE TIMES when it could of been just easier to throw her away like trash and just start over with all the other children to create a new bond of love.
Bondrewd is technically doing good things with his experiments, but he knows that they way he's going about it is horrific, but he's able to overlook that because he knows he will get results as long as he gets from point A to B and thats all the matters in the end. Which further shows how he's a contradiction to himself thats able to turn on & off his emotions. He doesn't view himself as a "Good Person" nor does he ever claim to be one either.
Everything that he has done has not been for himself, but for society as a whole. In the past he had already benefited society as a whole through his experiments but he had done so at the expense of all lives he deemed necessary to sacrifice, because for Bondrewd The Novel even his own daughter Prushka who he loved so much was no exception to the rule "All is worth sacrificing for the sake of progress even that which he loves."
Bondrewd objectively believes that what he's doing will provide benefits to the scientific field in studying the Abyss in the long run while morally it's obviously wrong what he's doing. (He kept mentioning of some catastrophic event that would happen every 2000 years within the Abyss that would be a huge threat to humanity.) Which is what played a huge part in shaping him as a character and the reason behind all his actions.
