Made in Abyss 1x13: "THE CHALLENGERS" // Reaction and Discussion

Comments

This is the episode that breaks everyone. It is so unbelievably beautiful and heart-wrenching.

Aycee

I agree with your analysis. I think the other guy just assumed you meant misunderstood as in agree. That's how it's generally used in this context tbf

Chuummy

"Why do I like the show which hurts so much",,,EXACTLY

mobata

After watching these 13 episodes, everyone is so shocked and stunned that they can't speak well. Never mind. I was one of them. Made in Abyss" kills the hearts of those who watch it. When you look into the Abyss, the Abyss is also looking at you.

Dormy

Yeah, guessing by how the graves in Nanachi's backyard are so overgrown, its been a LONG time.

Michał Jastrzębski

And now we have a 3rd main character who was, in a way, "made" in the abyss

Bee

You're assuming that I agree with his views or actions. People tend to brush him off as a monster (which they're not wrong) but not much as a researcher/scientist. He was so devoted to making the abyss a better place for cave raiders, that he gave his life, body and soul to pursue his goals and thus unfortunately becoming a product of the abyss itself, a very bad one at that... which portrays science w/o morals and w/o human decency. keep rolling your eyes idc lmao

og meowmix

Listen, he's a great villain but I roll my fucking eyes whenever some idiot comes along saying he's misunderstood. Bruh. If you're actually empathizing with Bondrewd, there is something wrong with you. Period, full stop, the end.

Brakthir

yes, everyones been saying it for like a month and i believe ben actually says it near the end of this reaction that they're suppose to watch it next.

Daniel Borrego

They do know the movie is before season 2 right? I hope they don't mix that up. You CANNOT go see the 2nd season without the movie or else you will not know what is going on.

I have kept up with made in abyss for a while now. I was definitely hurting the first time I saw certain parts of the series but going back to this episode after seeing it a few times its actually quite a very happy ending we get. Its not as rough seeing the backstory.... even though its for sure the worst part. Instead of crying you see it as a good send off for mitty and all the torture she had to endure. Nanachi found people to be with and comfort her after she had to part with her first friend. Overall its a nice episode to end off on.

L.C.

Holy shit.... Bro went nuts on this. A 4 hour long in depth analysis of this one episode lol

L.C.

I love bondrewd period 😂

Night Sterling

Bondrewd is my fav villain in all pieces of media, and he is often misunderstood. Thanks for the reaction ben and anna, MiA can be emotionally draining for some people but I feel that's why people remember the anime so much.

One word for this episode…”subarashi”

Night Sterling

Oya oya someone still hasnt fallen into the depths of despair

Night Sterling

Oh! Happy time with friends! Aaaaaaand it's gone.

Tempered Glasses

:'(

Tempered Glasses

One thing we know for sure is that Ben doesn't know.

Tempered Glasses

Another detail is that, well, there sure were a lot of petals used for funerals in the streets of Orth. Maybe it's a seasonal thing.

ZizZazZuz

It's also something that, short of breaking their promise and killing themselves, descending further into the abyss is the most surefire way for Nanachi to die

ZizZazZuz

Clearly you mean Maaa

Aaron Griffin

I'm gonna echo what some others have said: I joined just to watch this one early. I, and probably a lot of us watching along with you, experienced Made in Abyss solo. And watching along with you is such a meaningful experience. I also want to say: it's really nice to see/hear an emotional male reactor, and to even have you talk about the internal experience. Additional note: the mention of Bondrewd's voice actor giving the wrong vibes is exactly the impact Bondrewd is supposed to have

Aaron Griffin

Made in abyss: Dawn of the Deep Soul is between S1 & S2,a great movie, enjoy it。

Rick Liu

I love Bondrewd as a villain

Jay Steiner

That would be nice, there's no worry though, Anna & Ben don't go through the comments personally. :)

Serodin

Tsukasa, haha that's good

Serodin

I agree! Happy to have these two great people to connect with on it and my feelings about the show.

Serodin

my theory on Mitty's immortality is, that its actually...Nanachi's "fault", so to speak. After all, she literally asks fate not to take Mitty from her. And so, as part of Nanachi's blessing, abyss listened.

Appriser

Misery loves company? The true treasure was the friends you made along the way?

Ttsukasa

Tramp. Your last line is a form of spoilers, I really wish ppl would stop "warning" reactors and let them blind react.

Ttsukasa

My summary of made in abyss to my friends interested in watching: Dora the explorer teams up with Megaman and decide to explore hell. Even with said description they still aren't ready.

Ttsukasa

In case you missed the last 4+ narrator intros of the episode.... The yarning of needing to learn more, to know more, often leads to destruction pain and suffering, but at the end of the trip, will you find your treasure or your demise? The show keeps warning us... It's brilliant in how it evokes the main character's feelings even in the viewers of the show. "Why do I love something that hurts me so much".

I became a patreon just for this reaction. I feel like watching this episode with you guys was an intimate experience. And that's what I love about this show. If you can manage to open up and let yourself be immersed in this show, you get an experience. a genuine one. Of living in a different world. And how beautiful it is to long for discovery and mystery while sharing that with friends. And the horrors of losing just that.. Please continue to let this show treat your emotions as a punching-bag, As it did with mine. And know that you have each other and us to pick you back up after. TL,DR; Cant wait for the reaction to the movie thanks guys! <3

Remi Halffman

Oya oya?

Chuckyd

Something that's not really often brought up but is worth thinking about, is Bondrewd's last words to Mitty to "try to stay alive to keep Nanachi safe", and the curse the abyss puts on Mitty causes her to be "unable to die". You can mirror it with Nanachi being unable to end herself until she sees off Mitty, and Riko being unable to die since she needs to be there for the girl she saw in her dream. There's a pretty heavy theme of suffering through pain for the sake of other people in this episode, pretty dark stuff. Can't wait to watch you guys experience the movie and S2!

Leo

Welcome to the beginning of Made in Pain........

HessianX

This episode NEVER fails to make me cry.

Chuckyd

About Mitty's final scene. Nanachi has been trying to kill Mitty for a long time, saying her good byes each time to the point of feeling rehearsed like we saw it. But at the last second when Nanachi realizes that this was the final time, she stops Reg just so she can really tell Mitty how she really feels and give her a proper good bye. But Mitty still remains unresponsive. Nanachi, while helping Bondrewd still has hope that they can return Mitty back to her human form, that's why she keeps drawing pictures of her. But when Nanachi sees what Bondrewd has been doing to her, she realizes that there is no way to save Mitty. Nanachi dropping Mitty's picture is a metaphor for giving up hope of ever seeing her again.

William Pina

Yeah, Made in Abyss is a devastating masterpiece. And you're not even halfway there yet. But, in some way, when you've watched/read MiA, you know you've watched/read something you'll never forget, a singular, major work that exerts an incredible power of positive and negative fascination...like the Abyss itself. Rarely are beauty and horror 2 sides of the same coin. The writing, the world-building, the visuals, the music...all remarkable. Seriously, launch spotify and listen carefully to the music...Kevin Penkin's work is just mind-blowing in its technicality and emotion. So what's next is the movie "MiA: Dawn of the Deep Soul" (2020). It's the direct continuation of season 1 (the movie adapts vol 4 and 5 of the manga). You're about to find out how well-written is one of the best villains in history. Bondrewd is an extremely interesting and unexpected character. Then season 2 (the final ep is also 50min long), with my favorite character, sosu.

GTB

Made in Abyss to me has always been the concept of beauty in horror. Even tho everything seems terrible you can still find comfort in the shared experience in those closest to you and those you meet along the way. Also cant wait for the movie

Frozenbozo

A lot of people question the need for all the horrific scenes in the show but I think the whole show wants to make you uncomfortable on a deep emotional and physical level to communicate just how horrific the Abyss is so it can contrast with the main trio and their personalities and journey. I've never seen a show that makes me feel so much on such a deep level. Shows can make you feel emotions but what Made in Abyss does is something different. It's on a whole different level. BTW the movie is even more traumatic so brace yourselves.

Tramp

What a horrific sight. At least it can't get much worse. Nothing but happy abyss adventures ahead of us.

Readster

if it makes you guys feel any better, this show pretty much hurt us all the same the first time too :D i dont think ive be affected so vicerally by an anime like this one did for me. The messed up part is, as bad as it hurts you, you STILL want to see more. because its just so compelling of a world and a story. i guess its the ultimate version of curiosity killed the cat(maybe).

Daniel Borrego

My body is ready. Mitty's was not.

Serodin

Ooo, I will for sure

Serodin

You owe it to yourselves to check out at least the 1st hour of this 4 hour long analysis of episode 13 and all of the details you might have missed. https://youtu.be/39NMSZu0c1Y?si=0JdUt3HEOoOPj4gD
