Thorkell the Tall is a guy who really shows up in old sagas, but I think it's one of those things where it's hard to know how much of the legend is true. He likely existed but wasn't as tall as portrayed. It's kind of a cool cross-cultural thing to me that the often exaggerated tone of anime allows for exaggerated, legendary figures like Thorkell to fit in. Like it feels like Vinland Saga does a similar thing to what old legends/sagas did: tell an epic, larger-than-life story grounded in real history.
