Oh he technically had the technical potential yes, but in the MT world your motivation kinda is part of your actual potential (I mean like the real world in some ways). So because how Paul is he never could reach Saint level, despite technically being able to. It also comes to the fact how big the jump between advanced and saint really is. After all each rank is exponentially harder to reach and it's symbolized in the naming scheme too. Saint is technically only the half way point in terms of ranks but in reality it can be considered the peak for almost anyone. The first three ranks are named after skill level, anything after gets a distinguished title.

It was mentioned that paul liked to goof more than train, and even with that, he mastered advanced class in all 3 styles. That is not an easy feat because all 3 styles are so different and the only thing in common is that all 3 use a sword and nothing more. So Paul probably had the potential to grow more. But yeah, fighting a saint sword/water/north is really bad news for anyone.

Rudy having to, once again, rationalise doing something good by finding a "trade off" as an excuse, then actually feeling so happy because Gustav thanked him ... so many little subtle things about his character development, I freaking love it.

Sorry for dropping another comment, but loved the discussion about Rudy as a protagonist. The idea of building a character from the ground up describes it so well. We are observers to the story that unfolds and how Rudy changes as a person. Learning to improve himself and striving to be a better person. But the story never feels like it's forcing you to be ok with the things that have happened and that he's done. Does he get away with some things a little too easy? Yeah he does. But ultimately that feels like it's just so the story can progress instead of dwelling on Rudy the entire time.

Yeah fighting Gallus was such a big thing. Fighting a North Saint in close range as a mage is essentially a death sentence. You could see it with how Rudy could see Gallus's movements but couldn't avoid the knife despite of that. Never forget, Sword fighters are usually stronger than mages in 1v1 situations, especially in close range. On top of that even Paul couldn't break through to Saint level (though he makes up for it by being advanced in all sword styles)

Very much agree. Personally I think it's ok to watch the OVA after 17 too, but after 18 is a bit better. As long as it's not after 16 cause that kills the flow, there was a reason that extra chapter is an extra chapter.

Hi! Since 16 + 17 are right around the corner, I'd HIGHLY recommend (after having watched this show 25+ times) to watch 16-17-18 then the OVA. The OVA is essentially 16.5, showing us a specific event that happens off screen, but 16-17 HAVE TO be watched back to back and 18 has a very similar theme and I recommend not interrupting the flow.
