Sasha's Legacy! Attack on Titan 4x11: "Deceiver" // Early Access Reaction and Discussion

I really love Gabi in this episode and how it starts her arc, I can't wait to see y'all react to the next few episodes in relation to it,, you're gonna love it. I also love how frustrating Gabi is, I think part of it is because it of how real she is. As someone who lives in Oklahoma I know a bunch of little Gabis and it's so heartbreaking and frustrating. Her character in particular is such a good study in how prejudice and bigotry works in children and I wish more people would understand her because I think it's really important.

It has to be the horse that eats hair. It would be a missed callback opportunity if it wasn't, and AoT doesn't miss those...

Before judging too hard on Gabi's character I feel like this is an important read: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Children_in_the_military.

This episode has great juxtaposition with things from previous episodes. Hange remembers Sannes' words. She became what she fought against. She's locking up and silencing people for sharing info, the same thing the military police did that caused her and the scouts to rebel in the first place. Reeves and the reporter indirectly call her out for not living the words she once idealistically preached. Gabi is subconsciously exposed to the idea that Marleyans perpetuated crimes to people who have no involvement, the same way paradis did to the people in her home. Aot is great because it highlights the hypocrisy of everyone, including the characters we like, and doesn't take the easy road of just directing criticism at the antagonists

Incredible episode. The voice acting in AOT is on another level. Kaya challenging Gabi's world view was such a powerful scene.

Fun fact Sasha was supposed to die saving kaya in season 2 but the editors came to her rescue and convinced the author not to kill her then.

Night Sterling

Sean Carroll
