AOT SEASON 4- Crunchyroll vs. Blu-ray
Added 2022-10-14 18:27:05 +0000 UTChey everyone! ^-^
we are getting very close to the end of AoT season 3… So how should we watch Season 4?
Comments
Don't worry, it has the same scenes, or sync, it's just a visual update. It's the same episode length. There are some people complaining about the subtitles, idk about that tbh. I'm telling you bc I've compared the two versions, it's literally just a visual update, not a remake of the episode so it'll be fine.

2022-10-15 17:41:26 +0000 UTCBruh there is nothing here that's about personal preference. It's all about just allowing Ben and Anna to get the best possible AOT experience. There is not a single downside to choosing blu. The subtitles are perfectly fine, and there isn't a single person in the comments here who can name an actul mistranslation for the new subs. The time-codes remain nearly IDENTICAL and the run time is exactly the same, so everyone can still just watch the old version and follow with blu reactions on full-lengths perfectly fine. There really is nothing to complain about, it's all benefits with no downsides.

2022-10-15 17:23:31 +0000 UTC"TLDR: Blu-ray subtitles are different but perfectly fine (IMO) and people watching full-length Blu-ray reactions can still follow along on Crunchyroll." THANK YOU. That's exactly what I've been saying all along. I have no idea why the mass histeria ever took place. People can still watch the full-lengths on crunchyroll and the subtitles are FINE. There are no downsides at all for blu-ray, not for us, not for Ben and Anna.

2022-10-15 17:18:54 +0000 UTCOkay so on the subject of the subtitles, I was a little confused because I didn't remember there being a big thing about them being 'bad' when the Blu-rays got released and I couldn't really find any discussion of it online. I've seen both and I couldn't remember noticing a difference. In the interests of SCIENCE, I actually went back and watched both first episodes side-by-side to check. It's a different translation for sure, but there's really not a whole lot in it, quality-wise. From my beginner Japanese language perspective I think the Crunchyroll subs are slightly more literal and the Blu-ray subs are a bit more interpretive? I noticed the latter swapped out a couple of Japanese idioms for more recognisable English equivalents, which I think is a good thing, but also had a couple of instances of colloquialisms/slang being used by characters where it seemed a little bit odd. The difference is super marginal and entirely stylistic though; there's effectively no difference in the content of the dialogue, and I didn't notice anything that seemed like a mistranslation. I'm pretty confident that holds true throughout the entire thing too, otherwise there would be legions of folk online kicking up a fuss about it. I also didn't have any sync issues with running the first episode side-by-side - they DID slightly change the timing of certain cuts, but I don't think they did anything at all to the audio track for the remaster, so episodes maintain the same start and finish time and people watching full-length on Crunchyroll won't end up lost on full-length Blu-ray reactions or vice versa. TLDR: Blu-ray subtitles are different but perfectly fine (IMO) and people watching full-length Blu-ray reactions can still follow along on Crunchyroll. I'd absolutely go for the Blu-ray. They really did make a lot of big improvements to lighting and fixing off-model stuff, particularly early on in 4Pt1.

2022-10-15 16:22:35 +0000 UTC"It's not about comparison, it's about quality." do you realize that is a fallacy? all of you in the bluray rally needed to be genuine and think before voting if that's honestly the best experience for a s4 first-timer ALL things considered and not your personal preferences...
Ego Jinpachi
2022-10-15 15:23:34 +0000 UTCwhy? many reasons, I just listed some, ... makes no sense to reply without reading first, if you had reading comprehension you will notice I'm not against the bluray as long as it doesn't have those or other drawbacks, if it was everything the same as the original+ better graphics then sure it's a no brainer to watch the exact same video in let say 1080p instead of 720p. but is that really the case here tho?
Ego Jinpachi
2022-10-15 15:10:23 +0000 UTCSo what? If S4 had a lot of badly drawn scenes and they had time to fix that, why should they watch the downgraded 1.0 version? Makes no sense.

2022-10-15 11:36:30 +0000 UTCpoorly worded on my part: I meant it from the standpoint of actually streaming the blu ray version - not the act of lining up the times. Crunchyroll episodes are a lot easier to access.
Darby
2022-10-15 05:26:25 +0000 UTCIt's not about comparison, it's about quality. Mappa released the episodes quite literally unfinished. Some of the CGI on titans looks literally PS1 tier bad. The overuse of blur and dust also speaks volume of their efforts to conceal missing animation. It's because of tight deadlines upon release. Blu isn't a "better" version, it's a finished product. I don't know why would anyone watch an unfinished one if given the choice.
Adam Adamowicz
2022-10-15 05:13:39 +0000 UTCHow tho? It's just a few visual updates, the timecodes are identical.
Adam Adamowicz
2022-10-15 05:09:55 +0000 UTCAnd guys... if their first time is bluray then they won't notice what are the improvements in quality since they have nothing to compare it to, it comes obvious to you having watched the og version, but they are going in blind, remember that.
Ego Jinpachi
2022-10-15 04:51:31 +0000 UTCI haven't seen the bluray version, but if it has different scenes, subtitles, or sync discrepancies, then I rather watch the original version as we all did as viewers our first time, that would be the genuine journey after all.
Ego Jinpachi
2022-10-15 04:46:38 +0000 UTCBlu Ray would be more difficult to line up full length reactions vs. Crunchyroll.
Darby
2022-10-15 04:15:26 +0000 UTCI would probably recommend sticking with Crunchyroll since those are the subs you've been using so far and it will keep it more consistent for you, especially since that's probably what we'll all be using when part 3 comes out. The blue-ray visual upgrades are really nice though. I'll enjoy watching with you no matter which one you choose.

2022-10-15 00:26:05 +0000 UTCI'm sorry but asking for evidence / more information of the quality is the opposite of buying into mass hysteria. Plus just in the previous episode they misinterpreted Historia's Queenhood completely wrong based on mistranslation, it does have big implications to someone going so deep into their analyses.

2022-10-14 22:52:05 +0000 UTCsubs for the blu-ray are fine. Don't buy into the mass hysteria.

2022-10-14 22:42:16 +0000 UTCGuys, there is literally nothing wrong with the translation, I've just watched about 7 episode last week and they were perfectly fine. I don't know what's the big deal with the warnings - the graphics are fixed to a massive degree, especially the awful, unfinished CGI. Let them see the finished product. You can follow it on crunchyroll just fine, the timecodes are identical. You won't feel the difference, but they will. That's the point isn't it?
Adam Adamowicz
2022-10-14 22:40:27 +0000 UTCI'm so glad about the poll results - yes, the visual upgrate is massive and SO WORTH IT! Subtitles are perfectly fine on blu-ray as well. I'd love to hear some specific complaints, they're basically the exact same translation that was used for the original.
Adam Adamowicz
2022-10-14 22:32:15 +0000 UTCI agree

2022-10-14 22:27:16 +0000 UTCTo me the bluray visual changes are not much of an improvement, and in some cases i think it looks worse, especially some character faces.

2022-10-14 21:19:55 +0000 UTCJust watch on crunchy roll. It's still great and it will be easier for us that watch full length reactions
Jason Parker
2022-10-14 20:54:45 +0000 UTCI don't get it, I've watched everything on Crunchyroll and was perfectly happy. Now I'm seeing people warning about bad subtitles on the blue ray and you have to stress about making sure to get the right subtitles? This just feels like a huge hassle for a tiny upgrade in visual experience. I don't think people take into account what reaction creators have to do to make their videos. I don't know what B & A's setup is but I'm betting they're either watching it on a computer monitor or a smaller gaming monitor. It's easy for the average person to just slip in a blue ray dvd and start watching on a huge 4K TV without worrying about lighting, if everything is recording and the sound is good. End of the day if it's easy for them to accommodate blue ray and they're willing to buy it and all that then that's great. I just feel like us as watchers make them feel like they have to jump through hoops for us when I'm just happy they're reacting. I don't need special requests.

2022-10-14 20:41:59 +0000 UTCHow bad were they, is there a comparison somewhere posted online? I fear potential misunderstandings in the story are much worse than slightly worse visual quality.

2022-10-14 19:48:08 +0000 UTCOne thing I want to point out, Season 4 has been released on Bluray with every episode so far in Japan, here in America we only have the bluray version up until season 4 part 1. Although for part 2 I'm sure you can find online the Japanese bluray verson with official English subs.

2022-10-14 19:40:31 +0000 UTCNot sure if you guys are aware, there was a studio change for AOT season 4, it's animated by Mappa. Same studio as Jujutsu Kaisen and Chainsaw Man!
Armin Arlert
2022-10-14 19:33:20 +0000 UTCHow would one even use Blu-ray with different subtitles? Is that possible?
Corey Hughes
2022-10-14 19:30:51 +0000 UTCYeah actually in S2E6 the Blu-ray corrects a very obvious animation error that Crunchyroll has retained.

2022-10-14 19:30:47 +0000 UTCIt's a must to go with the blu-ray no debate, and not only for season 4 but for the whole series.

2022-10-14 19:29:30 +0000 UTCBlu ray looks better but the subtitles are very inaccurate
Sean Carroll
2022-10-14 19:19:54 +0000 UTCBlu-Ray, but make sure to get the Crunchyroll subtitles, a lot of fan subs are very abridged and of poor quality, and it will affect the enjoyment a lot

2022-10-14 19:19:16 +0000 UTCI say whichever version has the best subs lol, I watched on crunchyroll but as long as the blu ray subs are good then go for it I say
Josh Ashford
2022-10-14 19:05:50 +0000 UTCBlu Ray 100%! If you really wanna enjoy the new animation studio, them Blu ray. But it's true what one said, make sure the subs are the correct ones!

2022-10-14 18:51:11 +0000 UTCIf you’re going to watch the blu-ray, make sure to find a version with the Crunchyroll subtitles. As the others you might find, such as the Damedesuyo subs several blu-ray releases use can have very abridged translations that won’t match what you’ve seen on Crunchyroll. I would say having proper subs is vastly superior to the visual upgrades the blu-ray offers, but of course, both would be ideal.

2022-10-14 18:44:03 +0000 UTCI've seen a few videos comparing the two, and I definitely think the blu-rays look better. Lots of little details that come off looking better. Plus they fixed a few inconsistencies, like a character's hairstyle that should have been different given the time that the scene occurred, etc.

2022-10-14 18:34:24 +0000 UTCBlu-Ray, no contest. It's just a straight upgrade.

2022-10-14 18:34:18 +0000 UTCBarring a 5 second sequence in one episode where 2 shots were accidentally displayed in the wrong order, the Blu-ray is on the whole the superior version.
Benjamin Yee
2022-10-14 18:31:38 +0000 UTCI’ve only ever seen it on crunchyroll, but If the blu ray subtitles are the same then go for it! Also there’s a few end credit scenes throughout the season, all of which you have to watch.
