Princess Bay.

After our trip to Port Townsend we returned to Tally Ho and set off again into the Gulf Islands. This was one of our favourite anchorages - Princess Bay, on Portland Island. Although it can apparently get crowded in the summer, we had it all to ourselves, which we are starting to get used to!

The entirety of Portland Island is a protected park, and highlights include a beautiful 4 mile trail around the coastline, lots of marine- and bird-life, and a variety of interesting mushrooms for the sharp-eyed hiker.

Princess Bay. Princess Bay. Princess Bay. Princess Bay.

That old Jeep belonged to Conover. He had bought the Island. Moved there from Chicago. He was a Photographer and the guy that discovered Marilyn Munro (Norma Jean). It was the 50's and he built a Bomb shelter. You used to be able to climb into it but The Parks have sealed it. There was a table inside that must have been built inside it as it wouldn't fit out the only exit/entrance LOL. Conover wrote a book about the place "Once Upon an Island"

Thank you for sharing this stunningly beautiful photo!

If you can fit it in, consider stopping off at Wallace Island (between north end of Saltspring and Galiano). It’s another island that is all park, and there’s a lovely walk from one end to the other (and, as I recall, a beautiful old rusty truck sitting mysteriously in a meadow about half way…). We’d kayak there and camp at the north end but there’s a proper anchorage at Conover Cove on the west side.
