Excalibur (1981) Reaction

I love your clear enthusiasm for this film. It is one of the best telling's of this story that I have seen. It is dark in places but has lightness as well, such as Merlin despairing at how little Arthur is listening to him when he speaks of the future, and when Percival bumps into him and he bangs his head and falls to the ground. That moment when Arthur kneels before Uryens in the water... It is so powerful that it still has a massive impact decades after first watching it. It is just one reason why I was happy to see the film again this morning, 40 years after first watching it as a teenager. As you said, this is more of a work of art than just a film. Some of the imagery in it is almost perfection. When the Lady of the Lake is holding Excalibur above the water, the beauty of that image almost takes your breath away. The King Arthur story has influenced people far and wide, including some unexpected references. We even saw it in that episode of Babylon 5 that you mentioned. In the UK in the late 80's there was a Gothic band called "The Mission" and one of their songs was called "Deliverance." It is a good one, quite up-tempo/fast for a Goth song, and it could have been written for role-players and lovers of fantasy. Some of the lyrics are: "Let me sleep for awhile and dream of Avalon and the Beltane fires. And a silent kiss steals away into the mist, and out to the lake, Where the sword will rise again. From the water, into the hands of the Chosen One. The Righteous One. Forever and again." I am really glad that you liked it as much as I and my friends did the first time that we watched it. Now it is time for lunch. I never thought I would be watching this film first thing in the morning. I will no doubt be watching it again one night where it feels even better with the darkness and the Moon outside. :-)

The music adapts much from Wagner, and a bit from Orff. So yeah, big classical pieces put on screen to fit an Arthurian story.
