There was also a change in software between foundation and netter digital who did the work for ITB. I believe the gen 1 stuff was lightwave, the CGI base that was used here was Softimage. The compositing was done using a piece of software called FliNT running an SGI indigo 2 (supplied by my company at the time)

Also, to clarify, it should NOT be watched after the pilot / prior to season 1, because it would be full of spoilers, but the way it looks back to give you those new perspectives is very cool. Plus, JMS had a TNT-sized budget to portray the Earth-Minbari War in a way that simply wasn't available to him in seasons 1 & 2.
