I’m The Luckiest Guy Smoke rose from a single chimney of the large, old chateau that sat nestled among the hills in eastern France. Ninety-five percent of the old chateau had been modernized, but the owner wanted this one room to remain mostly as it had been for centuries. It was used mainly for reading or just relaxing. It was sparsely furnished with a comfortable sofa which sat on a large oval rug a few feet from the large fireplace. Two messy stacks of books sat on a long coffee table in front of the sofa. When the owner moved into the chateau it was the only furniture in the room. Now a comfortable old fashioned rocking chair sat on the opposite side of the rug and a small end table sat to the left of the chair. A small tote filled with toys was on the other side of the chair. One toy car had missed the tote and lay between the chair and the tote. Neal, the owner, lounged on the side of the sofa farthest from the fireplace. He had on a short sleeve white undershirt and a pair of dark gray sweat pants. His bare feet were propped on the coffee table. A pair of sock-shod feet rested in his lap as he read his book which was titled “How to Parent a Genius”. The feet belonged to his wife, Sara, who lay on the opposite end of the sofa in her favorite silk gown. There were ear buds in her ears as she listened to an audio book of “The Way Things Work Now”. Her thought was that one needed to be prepared for the millions of questions from their four year old Constance and their three year old Conrad. As they took in the words from their respective books Neal absent-mindedly massaged Sara’s feet, eventually removing the socks to run his hands over her bare feet and at times up higher on her calves. A low groan came from the floor under Neal’s legs. It was St. George the Great Pyrenees dog who along with Dragon the cat had come into their lives eleven months earlier as a young pup and a kitten. Dragon was asleep in the rocking chair on the other side of the room. Even though Sara was listening to her book her eyes were almost always on the profile of her husband. His long jawline and electric blue eyes were something she never got tired of seeing. His silky dark hair looked amazing even when he woke up in the mornings. She had been attracted to him the moment she saw a photo of him in an FBI office in New York City when she was a young insurance investigator. However, at that time they had been adversaries and being romantically involved with him never entered her mind. Sara closed her eyes and smiled as a funny comment was made in her book. Sara was close to drifting off when she felt that she was being watched. When she opened her eyes, Neal was looking fully at her with that wide grin of his plastered on his face. “What?” Sara questioned. “I’m the luckiest guy,” Neal spoke softly as he seemed to be watching an old scene in his mind. Sara smiled at him as he leaned forward and stroked her strawberry blond hair. Finally, Neal spoke. “Do you remember the night after Peter and I were kidnapped by Vincent Adler?” “Alex?” “No, when Peter made us go to his house for Elizabeth’s Cornish hens. Remember Peter and I were still at the table talking while you and Elizabeth talked on the couch?” “Yes. It was a good talk we had,” Sara replied thoughtfully. Neal got distracted and cocked his head sideways. “What were you talking about? Me?” “Well, yes,” Sara spoke with a sly smile. “That’s what Peter said you were talking about. Then he told me a story about a similar scene to what we are experiencing right now, and he called himself ‘the luckiest guy’. I told him I didn’t think that was me. I thought I could never have that.” Neal paused and looked around him. He looked back at Sara and continued, “But I am…” He looked up into Sara’s hazel eyes and his happiness was complete. “I’m the luckiest guy.”

I probably would have been going bonkers when Neal “died” if I had not already had a spoiler about it. Even though I knew his death was faked, I have cried every time that Mozzie and Peter cry in that last episode…and I have watched it multiple times. On the DVD commentary they said that there was not a dry eye in the room when they were filming the morgue scene. I saw something today on FB that said…”which actor crushed a role so hard that nobody else will be able to live up to it”…well duh, Matt Bomer as Neal Caffrey. Originally the character of Neal was supposed to be older, and I think British, but the creator and casting director wanted Matt for the role. And the creator, Jeff Eastin, made an appearance in that last episode. He was the bum who took the bottle from the other guy and said “and you said it was Elton John”. There is a lot of speculation on the internet that Mozzie always knew that Neal faked his death, but I think he found out that Neal was alive at about the same time that Peter did. I don’t think Mozzie could have faked the level of sorrow that he felt in the morgue. If I can find my short piece of fiction, I’ll post it now that you are finished with the series.

I know that all the main characters are great, so doing a character thing on them might not be that interesting. I always thought that a character ranking of all the adversaries might be interesting. Maybe top 5 disliked the most and top 5 that liked the most (some of them were very likable). And I do like the idea of the top 10 cons, etc.

Can't believe our white collar journey has come to an end. This show felt like home. Like family. Peter, Elizabeth, Mozzie, June and Neal - I'm gonna miss all of you.

Fun fact: they had a few different endings in mind, and the actors brought up this one!

there was an interview with the show creator on the finale and it gives a lot of insight into some of the nuances of the episode. here is the link if you're curious. https://tvline.com/interviews/white-collar-neal-fakes-death-series-finale-recap-alternate-ending-573298/

White Collar Series Finale- Thank you so very much for all of your wonderful and fun reactions to this show I have loved since it first aired, Clint!! White Collar is such an entertaining and fun show, with characters I love as much as this show's writing. I am so happy I was able to introduce this show to you some time ago, and I'm even happier to see how much you've truly enjoyed watching it all this time too! For me... This show's ending is very bittersweet. While it breaks my heart seeing Neal's and Peter's partnership come to an end upon Neal having to fake his death in order to survive and move on with his life, I feel strongly that this really is the only way that this show could have ended. In a similar, bittersweet way that one of my all time favorite shows... Person of Interest, also comes to a bittersweet ending with my favorite character's death, knowing it was the only way this show could have ended for John Reese. I am just grateful that Neal is able to survive and live on, even though he must do so without the friendships he's formed through his partnership with the FBI. And I very much love and appreciate that even though Peter also believes that Neal really died at the hands of Matthew Keller just like Mozzie, Neal gives Peter one last gift to let him and Elizabeth know that he is still alive so that they won't feel sad for his loss. And so that Peter most of all, won't have to feel like he had failed him in any way. I absolutely love this ending, when Peter comes to realize that Neal is in fact, still alive. And it is also very heartwarming to see Peter truly grieve upon seeing his close friend dying, and learn that he had died upon him reaching the hospital. Very bittersweet indeed. Neal Caffrey, played by Matt Bomer, of course is my favorite character throughout this show, just as he is meant to be. Neal Caffrey doesn't ever disappoint. I love seeing such a clever and devious criminal character written to be such a good man with a good heart. And Matt Bomer plays Neal Caffrey brilliantly! FBI Agent Peter Burke, played by Tim DeKay, is a wonderful partner and good friend to Neal. Their partnership and friendship, is everything in this amazing and unique show. And both actors work brilliantly off one another! Plus... I love Peter's loving and playful relationship with his beautiful wife, Elizabeth, as well as his banter and frustrations with Neal's other close friend and criminal, Mozzie. I love that we are given the opportunity to see the friendship between Neal and Peter really grow throughout this show! And more so... I really love how by the end of this show... We see that Neal and Peter truly are very dear friends despite them both being on opposite sides of the law. Despite Neal helping the FBI and proving himself to be a good man who fights against the injustices shown within the white collar criminal world, Neal is still ever the conman and criminal. And yet I love that Peter is able to see beyond Neal's lesser qualities, as he comes to believe in Neal without any more doubt that Neal is truly a good man. Mozzie is played by actor, Willie Garson, who sadly died not too long ago back in 2021. I very much miss Willie Garson. He was such a fun actor. And Mozzie is such a fun character, who is very unique and hilarious throughout this show. I love his friendship, loyalty, and banter with Neal, as well as his odd friendship with Elizabeth, and his somewhat friendship with Peter and the rest of the FBI agents, despite his distrust and even hatred of the FBI. And Elizabeth Burke, played by Tiffani Thiessen, is also a wonderful character throughout this show. I love her beautiful relationship with her husband, Peter, as well as her friendship with both Neal and Mozzie, despite her husband's frustrations that she is quicker to trust in the criminal duo. Hers and Peter's loving relationship is precious and very sweet. I love them! And you can absolutely believe that these two are in love with one another. Both Tim DeKay and Tiffani Thiessen play so perfectly off one another as well! As for the recurring side characters we meet throughout this show aside from the other FBI agents... I absolutely love Neal's dear friend and landlord, June, played by actress, Diahann Carroll. Diahann Carroll is an amazing actress, and June is a great friend and supporter for Neal, Peter, and Mozzie. If I'm being perfectly honest... I'm not really a fan of any of the women that become any kind of love interest for Neal throughout this show. I don't care much for Sara Ellis, Rebecca Lowe, Alex Hunter, or Kate. Nor their actresses either. I think they are the weakest parts of this whole show. And I suspect that my dislike of them all comes from the fact that their characters all sort of pull Neal away from the friendships and relationships I do really love throughout this show. And I don't really feel much chemistry between Neal and these women, or Matt Bomer with any of these actresses who play them. And of course... I love both Agent Clinton Jones and Agent Diana Berrigan within the FBI too, played by actors Sharif Atkins and Marsha Thomason. As well as Peter's close friend and boss within the FBI... Reese Hughes, played by the late actor, James Rebhorn, who sadly died just before White Collar finished its six season run. An actor I also very much miss in the acting world, just as I miss Willie Garson. As for my favorite villains, or bad guys throughout this show... I absolutely love Ross McCall as Matthew Keller, and Mark Sheppard as Curtis Hagen. They're my favorites, because they're the most entertaining and their actors are brilliant! I also really enjoy Noah Emmerich as Garrett Fowler from season one. The rest of the villains throughout this show are fine, or even just so so. Overall... White Collar is an entertaining and exciting series, with a great main and supporting cast! It's cleverly written and directed, and every episode is a joy to watch. The friendships formed throughout this show, especially the main friendship and partnership between Neal and Peter, are brilliant and just fun. It's the relationships like theirs, that I love in any good show that I come to love! My love for these shows all begin with the shows' cast and their characters! And White Collar certainly doesn't disappoint when it matters most! I absolutely love White Collar! :) So, thank you once again for watching this amazing show for me, and for all the rest of your patrons who have also come to love watching your fabulous reactions to this show too, Clint! You're amazing, my dear friend!! And now... I am so happy that you will be watching more Leverage from month to month, in place of White Collar!! Another show I very much love and was very happy and excited to introduce you to as well! I can't wait for more Leverage from you!! :) Thank you very much, Clint! For all you do for us and for all your efforts to entertain us with your amazing reactions to these shows and movies I love! Sincerely, Heidi
