Virgin River 1X2: Lost

Okay, so I knew something shocking happened at the end of the episode, but I had no idea what. I had to rewatch it five times to figure it out. I was so focused on Lily not being Lily every time (it's totally Lily) that I did not realize she was breastfeeding the baby. What the hell does that mean?

Mel and Jack bring the baby inside. After a quick check up, Mel determines she's fine, but a little underweight. This is particularly frustrating for Mel as she can't get the baby to take the bottle. Either way, she heads into Doc's office looking for the contact info for the CPS. He comes in as she's doing that and forbids her. He says we take care of our own around here and they'll find the mother.

She's uncomfortable with the situation, but decides to give the town a little time to deal with it on their own. Connie (who owns the general store, I think) starts a phone tree throughout the town spreading the word and looking for information. At some point, she storms back in, super pissed that she heard though the grapevine that Mel had planned to give the baby away. Rather than explain, Mel just tells her she misheard.

Lily shows up with a bunch of baby equipment claiming her 4 daughters aren't having kids any time soon and it's just wasting space over at her place. Mel is grateful and puts the baby in the provided stroller and heads out to dinner with her. By now, the whole town knows she wanted to 'get rid of the baby' and they are all pissed at her. It makes for a bit of an uncomfortable meal.

Doc, meanwhile, is at pot city (I think that's what we're calling it). It's a sort of outdoor community where homeless people (?) live. Apparently, Doc comes to give them free medical help every so often. However, he also knows that the last time he was there, a girl was 7 months pregnant. Unfortunately, she's left and he can't manage to track her down.

Back at home, Lily brings over some onesie's for the baby and convinces Mel to go home and take and shower and she'll watch her. When she leaves she ends up calling CPS. She runs into Doc and he tells her he's got some leads on tracking down the mom. Mel tells him it doesn't matter as she called CPS and they'll be there in the morning to get to the baby. He's pissed and fires her (even though she has already quit).

When Mel gets back to the office, she finds Lily breastfeeding Chloe (oh yeah, we named the baby Chloe after Mel's sister who died before she was born) and is shocked. Okay, so if Lily has milk there are a limited number of reasons for it. The baby is her's (but why would she give it away when she's smitten with it), she's recently had a late term miscarriage or just given birth to a different live baby and she's still got milk production. But it feels like she might have mentioned any of these things before now. Hmmm.
