The Vampire Diaries 5X4: For Whom the Bell Tolls

Okay, so I went from, 'I know I should be emotional, Bonnie's dead, but we've known this for a while and she's still here,' to bawling my eyes out. Fun, right?

So Elena and Damon are both taking turns trying to jog Stefan's memory. Damon tries explaining to him that he's a vampire and giving him his journals to read. Elena is trying to recreate times in their past. Eventually, he realizes that they used to date and they are very close to kissing when she tells him she's with Damon.

That does not go over well. He disappears (and he's already having issues with blood lust) and Elena freaks out. She calls Damon to come help her find him. But Caroline finds him first. He knows her from her picture, but can't actually remember her. She's there with Jesse when he and Stefan meet, Caroline compels him to run and hide. Stefan agrees with this as he can smell his blood and wants to rip his head off.

Caroline tells him that she's got some blood bags in her car. When she goes to lead him over there, he disappears. Turns out, he's found Jesse in the crypt. He feeds from him and tells him he can totally stop. He doesn't need to rip his head off. But that doesn't last long. He pretty much immediately goes back for more. Drinking him until he's almost dead. Caroline shows up and stops him. She feeds her blood to Jesse to heal him and then compels him to forget.

Stefan heads back home and burns his journals. He doesn't want to live a life where his brother steals his girlfriend from him. He assures them that he hasn't turned back into the Ripper. Plus, Caroline has agreed to check on him. He can't trust them, but he feels like he can trust her.

Once he leaves, Damon finally tells Elena the truth he just found out. Bonnie's dead. (She begged Jeremy not to tell anyone, but they had to know). They hold a lovely little ceremony in the woods for her. Everyone takes turns putting something forward to say their goodbyes. Bonnie is there and speaking through Jeremy. Shortly towards the end of the ceremony, Tyler shows up. Caroline throws herself into his arms and looks so happy. (A far cry from how she felt about him earlier in the episode).

Jesse ends up professor's office where he's told he's got vampire blood in his system. Either he was very close to dying and someone saved him, or this is the first step to being a vampire. Jesse looks confused so I think maybe my suspicions of him were off base. But those about the professor were not. He injects him with something, killing him. Is he trying to make an army of vampires? Maybe he's covering up vampire attacks so he can keep as many of them alive as possible?
