The Mentalist 2X2: The Scarlet Letter

Okay, so I'm super glad that we're still dealing with Red John. One of my only criticisms of last season was that we didn't touch on it enough.

We've got a dead intern to a senator (that's the political office we're sticking with). They want to rule it a suicide, but Jane is quick to argue. There are rumors flying that the dead girl had an affair with the senator's husband but they both deny this vehemently.

When we show up to interrogate the senator and her husband, Jane hangs back and peruses her desk. He finds a scrapbook and a bunch of sand from every beach she's been to. This makes him think she's a romantic and a collector. He's sure she's got a memento from whoever killed her.

Back at the office, Jane realizes his couch has been moved so he get the janitor (who moved it to replace a lightbulb) to help him move it back. Seems benign, right? Totally cracks the case.

After meeting with the senator and her husband, Jane decides they don't have a sexual relationship. (I'm not one to question him, but this is such a flimsy reason. Dan and I are actually in love and in a sexual relationship and we often don't cuddle on couches with other people present). But, who am I to go against him.

Jane decides to stick a random paper in a drawer while calling Lisbon to tell her he's stuck something important in there. Afterwards, they wait to see who creeps in to take it. And it's the janitor. Turns out, he's on the take from the senators family. He ends up making Lisbon handcuff herself to the door and holding Patrick at knifepoint. During a commotion, he pushes Jane away and flees. Lisbon makes Jane tail him (although he seems skeptical about it and I still don't know why).

Once he gets outside, he sees him getting away in a car that ends up crashing. Lisbon runs out shortly after to see the aftermath.

The senator, her husband and her father show up at the police station, while they are interviewing the janitor. We tell them that he's a 'fixer' and is willing to cooperate for less time. While the senator and her dad rebuff them, the husband is all like, 'I'll take less time. I don't even know what's going on.'

Apparently, they senator is gay and married the husband to hide it. She was having an affair with the dead girl. But then she found out the dead girl was also sleeping with her father (who claimed it was to prove dead girl wasn't in love with her), lost her mind and bludgeoned her with a book end. Case closed.

But, while all this is going on, Jane (who knows Bosco has new info on Red John) has been pestering Bosco for what he knows. He's a total douchebag and basically tells him to fuck off. Excuse me. Fuck that guy. Jane is a fucking treasure. But, after the case, Jane seems to get the idea to bug Bosco's office, so we've now (for the time being at least) got free flowing information.

Comments

Jane does get paid to consult. He was hesitant to go after the guy, even though Lisbon told him to, because that is just not his role on the team. He steers clear (often hiding behind something) of the apprehension/violent aspects of cases.
