Why Don't You Make Videos Anymore, Caitlin?

Gentle Patrons,

There is a question I’ve been seeing, some of you may have even asked it:

Caitlin, please ma'am, tell us little guys why you don't make videos anymore?

Well first of all you adorable lil' cartoon mouse, if we care about FACTS here, I do make videos. We've made five videos in the last six months. That is... a respectable amount of videos? Even when I was deep into sabbatical I made videos. Even when I broke my ankle, I propped myself up like Elmer McCurdy in the funhouse and made videos.

To be clear, I’m not shaming anyone who has asked this question – it is a question asked in good faith and eagerness for a return to MORE CONTENT. I fully understand where you're coming from and I'm going to do my best to answer.

The thing about post-sabbatical Caitlin (a childless elder Millennial), is that I don't do much of anything I don't want to do. If I didn't want to be making videos, I simply wouldn't be. POOF, I'd be gone, a Caitlin-shaped vapor in my stead.

That attitude leads to The Caitlin Guarantee: Anything you see from me is something that I feel deeply connected to and believe I am uniquely qualified to speak on. If I go through the process of creating a video – a process that while rewarding and fun can also be fraught and exhausting – know that I am excited about the topic. I think this (the aforementioned Caitlin Guarantee) is important, considering how a lot of content is made these days – pandering to the algorithm, chasing virality, etc.

But I do understand your feeling that you are not seeing as much from me lately. Part of this is optics. A "creator" used to be able to make one or two reasonable things, for example: produce several YouTube videos a month, post on Facebook (remember Facebook?), etc. These days, a creator's checklist might look something like: create reel, post to TikTok, post podcast to Substack and cross post to LinkedIn, YouTube video, four Instagram stories, brand deal integration, etc etc and into the dark chasm. If you have someone whose work you follow religiously, there is a chance you can obtain content from them multiple times a week until the end of time. That will...never be me. If you give a mouse a cookie (access to a healthy work life balance) she will want a glass of milk (that forever.)

But I'm not trying to gaslight you here. It's not all optics. You might feel like you're not getting as much of me as *I* want to give you. That is also correct. The fact is, the only way for you to perceive me, to take in the information that my team and I create and present to you, is through tech companies. There is no other way.

(Note: The only other way is the written word, in a physical book put out by a publishing company. That is why most of my time is now spent researching ol' Titanic book . COMING SOON.....ish.)

I want to be perceived and taken in as me, The Caitlin, the AVATAR THAT IS CAITLIN. I think this is valuable because – and I know this might sound wacky – but I love me. "Me" as a purveyor of information. I genuinely enjoy it. I enjoy being a sort of grim reaper Bill Nye character. I would love to be in your lives in some form, at your side as you grow up and make death plans, until I myself am old and gray.

But every platform I'm on and everything I do feels very precarious. You know that I've been in this years long (losing) battle with YouTube. YouTube, where I built my public platform and so much of my public persona. YouTube, where I've connected with so many people who have become peers and collaborators. This is the same YouTube that, 2 million subscribers later, is dismantling my ability to distribute videos. People can't find them, they can't search for them. They are dead in the water. All that work, that passion, that belief in the importance of what my team and I are creating leads to, not NOTHING, that's too dramatic, but less ability to reach the deathphobic masses.

Which is the exact opposite of what I want to do. But I have no way to predict or prevent what YouTube is going to demonetize and bury. It's a very precarious way to work – the sword of Damocles dangling over your head at all times.

And the same thing goes with other platforms. Even if I were to propose a show to Netflix, that's no guarantee. Did any of you see the story that broke about the Prince documentary? It was made by one of the great documentarians of our time, Ezra Edelman, and the whole darn thing was CANCELLED. Turns out the lawyers who ran Prince's estate didn't want Prince being seen in a vulnerable light so they pulled the entire thing. This 9-hour masterwork that took Edelman years to make – gone, blocked.

That's a terrible, terrible thing that happened to Edelman, and the only criticism you can possibly have of him is that he probably shouldn't have attached his work to the whims of a large tech company. Surprise, surprise! You got screwed!

But since I'm the Ezra Edelman of YouTube – omg KIDDING – I feel this cancellation in my bones.

And look, I trust Patreon as a service. It's a service that I trust the most in the grand scheme of things. However, it is not a social media platform or network that is ultimately open source and totally free to everyone who wants the videos we create. That is why I loved YouTube – anyone could access these videos for free – and that is why I feel bummed.

So I'm trying to figure it out.

I don't want to end this on a grim note, especially since most everything in my life is very positive! (My editor told me today that after TWO YEARS my book is "feeling like a book." Ya'll, I'll take it.)

First positive: that photo at the top is a sneak peek from a video that we're editing right now. It's got some old school Ask a Mortician elements but also one of my absolute favorite topics and bizarro aspects of the funeral history of all time.

Second positive: We think we have finally figured out something that I am excited to work on, will give you more of me, and will be available easily to everyone, no sign ups, no barriers, no nuthin'. Youtube has broken our stride, but not our spirit. Death 4 everyone!

Next month is going to be big. Huge.

Thank you for being here deathlings,

Caitlin

That was my first thought as well, but then I realized: Caitlin is smart and savvy. She definitely knows about Nebula, and if she’s not working with them, there’s a reason.

Anne Marie Powell

I have some tears in my eyes because if your material wasn’t open to the public, I never would have found you after my grandmother passed away. When I found you, I truly needed the kind of information you were sharing about funeral practices and death culture. “Smoke Gets In Your Eyes” literally changed my relationship with death and I want that for everyone. Whatever you figure out I will follow you there and I hope there is a way to keep sharing openly!

S B

Excellent thought, "Just go read my book and ... sit by yourself... while I work on the next one."

Laura James

Ditto to your thoughtful comment, Amy J.

Laura James

everything seems only partly good these days. I subscribed to youtube partially because I thought it would support the creators there. WELP. I don't think I've seen everything you've done yet, but i've been following you since there was still naughty content on Tumblr.

Kat Moody

Seconding people's recommendations to look into Nebula - and there's also a new platform called "Means TV," which I believe is creator owned.

The Murder Nerd

Have you considered Nebula which is creator-owned? While the platform is not free (currently $6/mo or $60/yr), creators are given code for new subscribers to get 40% off. I am so glad some of my favorite YouTubers are there- Joe Scott, Chubbyemu, and Legal Eagle are a few. Content that wouldn't be allowed or monetized on YT is available there. Just a thought.

Julie Rauch

Reread your books recently, been getting my fix that way in between videos 😂

Andrea Emberton

I thought I'd commented on this! As YouTube is the only 'media of social' I use, it pains,(and angers!) me that they dare mess with you! One of their best, plus much needed advocate! I mean, we're ALL gonna die, and lose loved ones. Better we know our rights, needs and choices in the matter. So, Thankyou for all you all do. 👍🏼💙💝💙💖💙🥰✌

Laura Jarrell

Could it be that Netflix and YouTube heard you sing? lol! I’m just ribbing you! I love your videos like everyone else here does. You gotta do you and be happy. I’m sorry you’ve had so much rain on your parade! It makes no sense that you’ve been censored.

Leslie Clapper

Ok, excellent

Ingrid Humbles

Excited for this mustachioed new you!

Ashley

So I just got the post notification….which like rude…. But I’m literally sitting in my Death Positive sweats looking for the kids book online when I finally get the notification and the paid member option finally loads for me. So I guess the ‘verse knew how to time the notification.

Melissa Roth

This makes so much sense. I've been missing the old " Here's how to have a viewing at home" and " Here's how to mourn the loss of a pet" videos. But if there being buried, it doesn't matter how great the next one could be.

Tammy Meier

Chin up old bean!

Lindsay Armstrong

We support you not because we want to be entertained (that's a plus!!!), but because we believe in what you and your team do. No matter if you only put out 1 video a year, I'd still support you! Thank you Caitlin!

Johanna

personally, I signed up for your Patreon to support whatever you decide to do, no matter how long it takes, because I love what you do. When a new video appears, it's like getting a super special treat that I'm excited about. If there isn't one, I'm still happy to be supporting the work you have done and continue to do. Also, I work in the film industry on the "below the line" level and am forever astounded by any creator who puts out quality videos without a full sized support crew. People don't realize how many moving parts are required. So...do what you need to for your own sanity, as I'm sure you can see from the comments everyone here just wants to support and cheer you on. :-)

Elizabeth Cherry

Awww, Sweetie... No Bueno that all this crap is giving you such a hard time! It shouldn't hafta be that you need to email all us lil deathlings in huge batches, just do its all free for all of us... Re-donkukous!!!

Jen Jaffray

You don't owe anyone an explanation! But, it was nice. Because I think it's important to remember what creators are up against, both with garbage social platforms run by jerks and also because you are a person who chose to share your passion with people and maybe sometimes you wanna just be a person. Thanks for all you do — let us know how we can organize again YouTube in a Deathlings protest. In the meantime, look forward to whatever you're working on, whenever you're done with it!

Katy

maybe it's just bc I write but you make SO MANY VIDEOS? my goodness. You're the most productive, active "sabbatical" I have ever seen. You update with more consistency than some so-called active creators (which is fine; I think hassling an artist to produce on your schedule is rude beyond belief in any context). What an absurd and unfounded complaint. You're doing great just as you are. Don't change a thing.

Emily H.

This is cute lol

Eden Standing

I love you. How can someone be ANGRY they don't get enough of someone they love?! Your content is INCREDIBLE next level hilarious informative stuff. I'm hanging around if we get 1 video per YEAR. It's worth it!! I adore your work. Do it at whatever pace makes you as amazing as you are.

Eden Standing

Genuinely who asked this, she is making videos.

Lucille Audinet

I don't care how long the videos take to make: they're made with love and care and attention to detail that makes them worth while. Without that... Heck, would we even be here? Hell, I haven't posted a video I'd put any real thought or work into in... over 18 months? Sure, I'd posted some old stuff that I was hanging onto for a friend, but... No. Just haven't been motivated. So take your time and do your thing. I think everyone had been pretty happy with it all.

Nimbus Minx

Ha! Almost didn't recognize you with the mustache..So that does work

Tammy Meier

My apologies this has been mentioned (can't seem to read all the replies) but another Patreon I follow (Dark Corners Reviews) has had problems with YT, and they began posting some of their work to PeerTube. (https://joinpeertube.org/).

Robert Freeborn

Love you! 🖤

kimberly Urciuolo

I don't see you as a YouTube Creator, I see you as a documentary maker. They take time, research and effort. Everything is good!

Hugh Walker

Always so grateful for all your work, Caitlin, and really appreciate the insight. The focus on passion and quality over quantity is very understandable, along with the dealing with the precariousness of YouTube as a platform. Wishing you all the best.

Amy J

Can we all come over?

Abby Wilson

Wishing you nothing but the best! I understand the struggle.

Sibyle

I came here to suggest this! PeerTube was my first thought if there's an interest in a free YouTube alternative (or even complement? I don't know if there are rules about posting videos in both places simultaneously). I'll follow the videos wherever they may be, lol.

lime1035

I found you back in 2018ish and Ive watched everything you have out and bought all of your books. Keep doing the things you love. You and your team are very talented. I look forward to seeing what you do next. 💜

Tarilynn

Do your thing Caitlin. You created awareness that sparked a surge of growth for Death+ movement just by doing your thing. And you have a life to live. So don't forget to goof off, be a lazy bum, and not worry about us! Next time you're in Hollywood and want to be a lazy bum come over. My husband will make us a fabulous French or German meal (mont ventoux or spaetzel smothered in cheese and grilled onions or sauerbraten.) I'll amazed you with my haunted dollhouse, and we'll put our feet up!

Pollyanne Hornbeck

You still show up in my recommended, but that's because I sleep to you in the background (I know, I can feel the judgement) but I'm ready and waiting for the next thing (book, video, podcast) etc.

Tanith

We still watch and love you... know that! Also you might want to create your own separate mailing list that you send out when you create a YT video so the your passionate fans can know about it.

Erik Ace

Thank you for all you do. You are really loved and appreciated

Claire Dimler-Smith

As an author, I FEEL you on the social media burn out. I want to write, not post three times a week so people remember I exist. Just go read my books and then sit by yourself for a few months while I work on the next one. Take your time, Cait, we understand. We can wait.

Beloved Sylphaen

You do what's best for you and I'll be over here rewatching Iconic Corpses with just as much fascination as the first 20 times I watched them. Unlike the corpses, the videos stay fresh! 😄

Rachel

From the comments, it appears, you have a lot of understanding kindred spirit friends here. Most of us seem to understand that the system of things is incredibly frustrating as your efforts, time and heart, your money and all of your hard work are simply judged by a machine with no consideration or ability to look at what is actually being portrayed. Those of us who do not fit into any one box are making our own boxes and the system is looking at the mismatched hodge podge boxes and thinking they are in error and destroying them. It is easy for us to type our heartfelt " Don't get discouraged and please keep trying" it is in truth much harder to do when you are facing such unfairness. However as the others, I can only provided the heartfelt words and send forth good things into the universe for you.

Dora Hand

I’m glad to see this post. I was worried about you. I’ll be eagerly awaiting your next video, whenever it comes out. Stay true to yourself.

Beth Clifford

Thank you for the honest update. Keep doing what your doing and we will tag along. You are the most important person in your life. Keep that person happy.

VegasBob

I have been a follower since the early YouTube days, and will take whatever you are able to give, however you are able to get it to us! Your passion for your topics comes through loud and clear, and I appreciate all the work you do. Just be kind to yourself, lest you wear down your resilience. Keep on keepin' on, and we will be here!

Anita Moore

I've been with you since you made a very early ask a mortician about hip replacements and damn it I'll follow you to whatever platform you choose

Ashley Kate Meador

Thank you so much for all your work! I found you maybe five years ago and binge watched all your content. I am very excited to hear that you seem to have found a way to put out your content for all to watch again as that is where I stumbled upon you. Also, I love your Caitlin Guarantee™ :-D Keep on being you!

Iris Clark

Quality over quantity please

Eef Neleman

Hi Caitlin I have followed you here and in the other place for a few years now. I guess I am one of the people who would selfishly love more content because what you produce is eagerly waited for. Things change and I totally get how YouTube algorithms have moved you away from us, combine that with your passion for upholding your standards of content and presentation and we are brought to where we are. I will continue to look forward to your next presentation whatever that is and wherever it appears, and I just want to offer you my ongoing thanks for a job well done

Andrew Tait

Your passion shows in your work, never water yourself down!

Emma Droddy

As a Millennial of roughly your age, Caitlin, I've felt the promise of individual media production that briefly flourished on (mostly) YouTube has been slipping away. Where social media was once a fluff-filled way to waste half an hour and maybe find out about a music festival, that emptiness has taken on a sour odor of rot as the hollow desperation of entities seeking evermore unrealistic profits are squeezing harder to eke dwindling spending money out of us. It's a macabre existence on the Internet these days in an entirely different sense. Surely there must be something transformtive out there when that rot has nothing else to consume. And now that I've channeled some dead gothic poet for a hot minute, I will end by saying you're one of the good ones, and I'm sticking with you. 'Cause when you find something that fulfills you, you don't let it go.

Professional Void Screamer

Your answer also goes full circle in answering the original question; no wonder some viewers of your videos feel like you're no longer making any if YouTube buries them immediately so they never show up in their feeds...

TeaNTea

That would make for an excellent video!

Cindy Stott

Honestly, I'd like to see more people admitting to wanting to be, or having chosen to be, child-free. People should be respected for making that decision. It's not a bad thing. It's a personal choice and nobody else's business but theirs. I'm a mom, grandma, aunt, and babysitter for years before I had my daughter. I'm a retired elementary school teacher's assistant. I've known hundreds of children in my life. I love kids!😊 I'm well aware of how much goes into day-to-day raising & educating children. Children have emotional energy which they bounce on & off of us. They have physical energy which they create in their own little bodies. They are mentally energetic ALL the time. 24/7. Awake and asleep. Most importantly, children have loving energy which is shared in the world around them. They give and receive love immeasurably.❤️ It's fun watching them grow. In my case, I gave birth to my very best friend.🥰 My daughter is 38 and I raised her as a single mom. Everything was just the two of us. We've always been close. Since Jan. 2024 I've been living with her and her husband. I had a cardiac arrest...and lived to tell about it! Thanks be to God.👑 They insisted I live with them. Now that's love!💞

Cindy Stott

Personally part of what I like about your content is that it's not forced or being pushed out there to keep endless engagement. It's released when it's ready, with clearly the thought, care and time taken to make the best video possible. It's sad that taking time to focus on quality and interest gets punished now. It's also respectful to viewers, saving their time giving them something worth watching every time rather than low effort slop.

Stephen Bride

We love you too. 🖤 You keep doing you. We're here for it! ⚰️

Abby Wilson

Oh gosh...I can relate. Ever since they found the ruins of the Titanic I can't get enough. Loved the Titanic movie! Frankly, my favorites in it are the elegant rooms, clothes, hairstyles, furniture, etc, because I'm sure all of it was replicated after the originals. It was all so beautiful. I'm excited too about her Titanic book! It'll be a fun read!

Cindy Stott

I agree 100%! You worded your comment perfectly.🙂 Your dad sounds fun!😁 Looking forward to his natural burial. It's nice that it's arranged for him. I'm glad he's excited. It's probably different than anyone in your family. It's fun to be unique! My brother did that. He had his ashes buried at sea. A few of us went out in a boat off the coast of southern California. His 2 daughters (adults) dropped his ashes into the ocean. His granddaughter (14) was given flowers to drop in afterwards. We signed up with a company - we had a skipper & his assistant, and a really nice little boat. They gave his daughters each a paper with the latitude and longitude coordinates of where they dropped his ashes. We loved those people! May God richly bless you as you lovingly and attentively care for your dad.🫂💟

Cindy Stott

Just so happy you're still making amazing HIGH QUALITY videos! The quality on some things in this produce-produce-produce landscape is lacking. Was in between jobs after moving to UK so I did have to downgrade my subscription here and drop a few others. But now that I'm employed again and surrounded by medieval architecture, I do find myself needing a middle ages were magic shirt...

Khadijah Abdul-Aleem

LOL!😄 If thoughts could have an aroma, Caitlin's would be worth the cost!💲💰 Imagine the scents - decaying bodies, formaldehyde, and all that. Eww!🙂‍↔️😜

Cindy Stott

Thank you for explaining! I did not ask the questions, however, the answer was so interesting that I feel like I didn't know what I didn't know. Very excited for the New Things - and also just happy for you to exist and doing your thing.

Frau Tiger

How wonderful of you to share her videos! I bet the recipients are more than happy to get them. 😊

Cindy Stott

I agree with you 100%! 🥳💯

Cindy Stott

I'm getting retirement and disability myself. I agree that our monthly subscription is a good thing. It's a gift to ourselves. It's rewarding mentally. We know we'll laugh and be entertained, will be super interested, and will learn something new.☺️ Wishing you a wonderful weekend! From California USA.🌴😎

Cindy Stott

Hey, I’m just happy to see new videos whenever you post ’em! I have no sense of the interval duration. I just go “Ooh, new Ask a Mortician!” and it makes my day lol. Thank you for all that you do 💜

T. Strange

It really is time for us to return to that grand old medium, the Website. Remember those? Where you own the server, you own the domain, and you own anything you put there? Where the only app you need to view it is a web browser? Where nobody controls your content but you, and nobody can? And where there’s no faceless, soulless media company skimming off the top, and no incomprehensible algorithm deciding what and how much of your content others should see? The web isn’t dead, by any means. It’s just been forsaken, for no good reason, and to humanity’s loss. Social media needs to go back to simply promoting and directing traffic to a creator’s website, where the meat of the content lives. I think everybody here would love to be able to just go to your website and enjoy all you have to offer. You can still use Patreon, or whatever other supporter system, to control access, and offer tiered content. And you could still crosspost whatever you wished to YouTube etc. But you would own, control, and be the primary beneficiary of anything and everything you placed there.

Nathan Andrews

Same here.😊

Cindy Stott

Very well said!🙂

Cindy Stott

You are so cool, Caitlin!😎 You put together the best videos about the worst topics🫠...and we LOVE you for it!!🥰 No matter what goes askew with the video making process, we're here for you. NEVER will I say "Be gone, Caitlin, forever!"⚔️ That won't happen. Please take your time. Really. Not that I don't want to be gifted with new videos. Of course I do. I just want you to be okay. Looking forward to your next project. Your research, time, and attention to detail are always prime. Your comedy and sense of humor are like magic fairy dust sprinkled throughout.☺️ So much fun!🥳 Til Death Do Us Part.❤️❤️❤️

Cindy Stott

I will never not want more content from you and your wonderful team, you've made me think about death in all new and interesting ways (from what I want to happen to my body after I die to historical facts to the brutal treatment individuals suffered as an Iconic Corpse). Your passion for the topic is clear and also quite infectious, so not having new videos to watch is something of a downer (doesn't stop me rewatching old ones over and over again) but seeing what you're up against then it's understandable--Big Tech is always going to Big Tech and not care about its content creators hard work. As a Childless Elder Millennial myself we've got to stick together and support each other, so you do what's right for you, but always know we've got your back.

BearyBry

I'll read the reason from you later. I know that you do make videos after you have done your in depth research so you can create a high quality video for us. I am happy to wait for them.

Mari Robbins

Can't weight your amazing ty for all the work you do

Gatherer

I'll join the unwashed masses and say that even if you make only a handful of videos per year, I'll be here for 'em. I'm on a disability income, so money is precious, but I consider my monthly subscription to this channel a worthwhile use of those limited funds. Grim Reaper Bill Nye Forever!!

Bob Topping

seconded. the other creators i follow that promote Nebula seem to have a lot of good things to say about it. ofc, it might also be something you've already considered.. but anyway~

tzxazrael

Caitlin- I don’t understand why people would come down on you or ask you why there aren’t more videos? 1st, I think those people didn’t bother to take the time to deep dive and search for themselves for content. But 2nd and most importantly is you don’t owe anyone an explanation. Especially one that long! You work your ass off and people need to appreciate that. Please don’t wear yourself out or take in any negativity. You are amazing and deserve nothing but the best! ❤️

HCC

Oh, my dear, *dear* one. I will never ask you. I will take what you make and love it.

E Grace Noonan

I personally don't have any issues getting your content on YouTube, but I use the platform a bit differently than most I think because I visit the channels I subscribe to and directly look at they're videos list and posts, especially when I see that little blue dot of new content. Either way, happy to have been introduced to your content by a friend years ago, and to be a current subscriber now. I still share your content and re-watch 😁

JuliaO

I have heard a lot of good things about Nebula as a streaming platform in terms of treating their creators well, I'd definitely finally commit to a subscription if I knew you were on there!

Ru

Social media companies are the absolute worst and expect creators to bust their guts for nada except corporate profits. We are here for you and so excited for the next book

Kelly Hudson

Grim Reaper Bill Nye 🖤🖤🖤

Dustin Morton

Like everyone in these comments, I agree that your balance is important and I value the gourmet content you work hard to put out! One thing that I really enjoyed was the post last week highlighting some older videos that were back in the news in some way; it sent me back to the video about the Vessel, and I watched a bunch of others from that time as well. If that was something that felt sustainable, I’d love to get semi-regular “here’s an oldie but a goodie from the back catalog!” type posts!

Sydney A

Caitlin, I've been watching your content for years. I enjoy being a deathling. And I have always found it interesting, and I learn things. But sheesh, no one can produce all that content for all those years and keep it up, especially with YouTube banning words even used respectfully. And your subject matter used some of those words. My opinion is if you don't like what you see, skip past. But my 50 year old daughter used the word unalive in reference to her old dog's time coming. I was actually shocked. Maybe I'm just to real and open with my words. But you've always been respectful. Sometimes you make me cry (mama orca), but I'm kinda leaky anyway.

Cyn

Caitlin, you are loved, uber-respected, and subscribed to because we want to support you in your desire to bring incredibly meaningful and otherwise non-existent content into this sadly needy world -- you have more than demonstrated that you are to be trusted in your instincts of what to do and when to do it and I hope you will continue listening to your own internal sources and let whomever is dissatisfied feed their distractions elsewhere.

Teri Torchia

Caitlin, I would truly appreciate more videos — but a book would be great! And even several paragraphs about why videos now are more difficult than they were in the past is a good dose of Caitlin. Just please do continue putting your lovely deathling thought out there somehow! I see suggestions from other people about other platforms. I don’t know anything about those, but if you decide to use some different platform, I will make the effort to learn so I can see or read or hear your thoughts. In fact, if smell-o-vision gets invented and you post on it, I would go smell your thoughts! (ewwwwww…)

Ann Williams

I just want a video with your opinion on the new Oblivion remaster. Is that too much/off brand to ask??

Woot

I enjoyed reading your thoughts on being a creator of content. I find your content not only entertaining, but very thought-provoking and thoughtFUL! I’m so glad you take your time, and discuss what you find fascinating. Content used to be books, yes? Maybe I’m old-fashioned. I could just see Edward Gorey trying to navigate all this…..hmmmm. I know I’ll enjoy whatever it is you choose to share 🖤 Forever a Deathling! (as I care for my 91 year old father who is gleeful about his natural burial….oy.) You inspire more than you may realize!

Amy W. Hartsough

obligatory "yeah i know switching platforms is a big ask" disclaimer- but have you heard about peertube? it doesn't have the ads/revenue system youtube does, which might disqualify it entirely, but because there are multiple instances, you could find an instance that wouldn't remove your videos. then again, the audience has to be there and it's probably not yet. but! something to think about! love your stuff Caitlin- keep doing you!

Malusdraco

I'll take whatever Caitlin I can get. Unless it's more shit about crying, olOrca moms and ma'am, I love you from the bottom of my creepy little heart, but I could not do that. There was ugly crying.

Elisabeth

Have you looked into Nebula? I know that doesn't solve all your problems but I'd love to see more wonderful creators populate that platform.

Siobhan is On

I only see that getting worse as more and more companies replace people with AI…

Mirintala

Your work life balance is far more important to me than my entertainment. Looking forward to the book, and any other content you choose to release.

Mirintala

I can't tell you how excited I am for this Titanic book! When I was a kid my mom and I would pile up on the couch and watch the 90s Titanic movie together (only the first vhs). Ever since then I've had a macabre fascination with the Titanic (so much so I cried at the replica grand staircase at the Gatlinburg Titanic museum). I also love you as a creator Caitlin. I've read or listened too all of your books thus far and I think I've watched every YouTube video available. Thank you for not giving up on being our grim reaper Bill Nye ❤️

Edan Nichols

Well, you got me and my cheap ass $5 until October 27th. We’ll play it from there 😂

Jim Allen

Only today could I bring myself to watch the video you released 2 months ago about the greiving process of a mother orca. You released it, I was stoked, but I knew it was content my heart couldn't take at that moment. I find it interesting timing that only hours after I watched that, you posted this. I've been consuming your content since 2017, and started watching with my oldest child in 2020. Now she gets mad if I watch anything you make without her. Neither of us care how often you release content, just please don't stop making it❤️

Hillary Fraser

You put so much thought and work into your videos. I truly appreciate all the things I've learned from your videos. I'll be here for all your chapters.

Kristin Wright

Sending all our love. The spouse and I love to watch your videos, and we are happy with whatever schedule lights you up. And that’s The April & John Guarantee ™️.

April Starr

I love you and I support whatever your heart desires and nothing less. Quality over quantity forever and ever.

Mekal Banyasz

Love ya Caitlin, happy to wait for whatever you’ve got coming whenever it’s coming, it’s always top tier and we love your passion

Bridie Cox

I actually prefer less frequent uploads because I know it's going to be quality, and it's always a little treat when I see the notification pop up. After all, absence makes the heart grow fonder. I'm constantly excited to see what topic you decide to talk about too!

MindlessNonsense

I'm gonna say it... I don't mind that you aren't pumping out a new video every week or every other week. Because I know the next video will have the high quality, interesting information and witty jokes we all appreciate about your videos.

Weaver

Thank you for sharing this Caitlin! I have always loved your videos since back in the ol' days and this question really has run through the back of my mind every once in a while but I knew there must be a reason. A lot of the YouTubers I follow are getting really burnt-out from the very exhausting fact that you gotta do all those tasks to keep up with the very fast-paced world that the internet and social media has evolved into. I definitely look forward to seeing more content from you, patiently, and I can always binge the old content you got anyway if I needed a lil boost 😊 Sending you hugs all the way from the Philippines!!!!

Jemai Ramos

Not for nothin, the orca video did show up in my YouTube feed but I also follow you on YouTube so maybe that was the difference? And it was that video that prompted me to join your patreon bc you are amazing and deserve to be paid. ❤️

RL Grigg

We love you and your work. If I have to wait in order for you be happy, I will happily. Thanks for all you do for us!

Kelly Sleeper

I would love that!

Duchess Diana

I just want to say, I'm extremely excited for your Titanic book. I've been to Fairview and seen the many headstones, and looked at the recovered at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic and thought a lot about how those headstones and those artifacts are only a really tiny percentage of the people and things lost to the immense cold ocean. I have a slightly morbid low-key crush on John Henry Barnstead for figuring out such a brilliantly simple way of tracking victims of mass casualty events. And I'm happy to wait to read your insights on all of your research. Books take time, videos take time, and as a fellow childless elder Millennial, I understand investing yourself in the things you love and taking your time to do them the way you want them. <3

Shelley MacAskill

I cannot tell how just how excited I am for the book! That said...you have been putting out content, so while I don't want to spund judgemental, I do not understand the question. Anyway, keep on truckin' or some such sentiment. X

I hear you! I'm so sad that YouTube seems to be punishing content creators who (have to?) rely on Patreon to make interesting content (at their own pace) instead of pandering to the algorithm :( It feels to me like everything that was good on the internets is facing imminent doom, including YouTube, Etsy, Facebook etc with no good alternatives. Glad to hear you are sticking with it though, your content makes my little black heart happy.

Julie G

Thanks Caitlin! I know you must have got this advice from elsewhere already, but get Nebula to check you out. I think they will love you and give you the alternative platform that you need and deserve.

Felix Wong

Caitlin, have you thought about collaboration/interview with the lady that does the Taboo Education channel on YouTube?

Jessica Davenport

Don’t say childless, say child- free! I’ve been watching a lot of your old content recently stuff from nine years ago! I love everything you do and I can’t wait any future content

Amanda Jo Fisk

I’m baffled that YouTube keeps wrongfully demonetizing / flagging your videos. And that there apparently aren’t enough Real People hired to help creators through situations like this. Ugh 🫣

Tiffany Ferguson

I've been with you since the first video. You kept me company during college after my mom died and all of my friends "gave me space". Make what your heart desires and I'll enjoy it with gratitude in my heart.

Kate B.

I always love seeing your updates ♥️

Elizabeth✨

I love seeing less of you! (…wait…that comes across the wrong way…)

Dylan Meconis

Thank you for the update. I think a lot of creators are having difficult choices to make right now about where to release their creations and how to get visibility.

Tamalita

There are alternatives like PeerTube, but of course the downside of federalized platforms is that they're smaller and that makes it a lot harder to reach the average people that aren't aware that options beyond YouTube exist. Obviously that's a problem if you're trying to do any kind of advocacy/education.

Megan

Caitlin, I share your videos on FB, X, Threads, Bluesky, and instagram…I am petty. If you build it, I will come and share it. Do what you need to do. I can’t take some of the garbage out there…I need my content. And I have zero problem harassing YouTube. I pay them money…they can suck it up.

Duchess Diana

Thank you!

joy mcguire

Nebula is another option. Neither is perfect, tho, since they're both subscription-based and not everyone can afford another subscription service.

Mel

Looking forward to it. There is a free version of Patreon now too and you can connect it to YouTube so at least people who follow you here can find the video but maybe your option is better.

Cheryl Kinkaid

Another book?! I'm so excited. There is an odd censorship trend that's been happening for awhile so unfortunately it's not a surprise you're having problems with visibility on YouTube. Whatever platform or mode you put your content on (even if it's carrier pigeon!) I can't wait to see it!

Laura Safarov

Love you and proud to support you in this particular political climate, at this particular moment in history.

Teff Kraile

Always good to hear from you! Thank you for taking the time to explain what's going on. Side note: I hadn't heard about the Prince documentary and I am HEARTBROKEN. 💜💜

Robyn J.

I'm excited to see what that idea you have is! I'm also glad you're taking care of yourself. What you do is valuable, and I want to see you continue loving it for as long as possible, and sometimes that means not breaking your spirit against the cruelty of the machine even when it feels like disconnecting from your fans. Sending you good vibes, from a deathling in Indiana 💜

Mark

Love this! Frustrating that traditional platforms like YouTube are such a hassle now, but glad to hear you've got some stuff brewing that works for both yourself and us deathlings!

Rhianna Clapham

Personally, as someone with very little sense of the passage of time who follows a number of "slow" content makers I think you're on fire. Stop drop and roll.

Jack Frost

Hey, you put out videos as much as you feel like it. We are on this journey with you, have been through your sabbatical and it was clear, that another Caitlin would emerge from this. And Hallelujah, here she is! And her rare videos still a marvel and even better than ever before. So, why complain?

Christoph S.

Creativity and dealing with the Anal-Cranial-Inversion Disorder of hosting platforms takes ENERGY. Miss Caitlin - you’re probably continuing to heal from your broken ankle; you’ve got other things going on! I appreciate seeing your marvelous videos when you can put them out - at your convenience Fun With Oncology has caused me to be very parsimonious with my use of energy, because I basically have none (thank you, cisplatin and gemcitabine) All the best to you in your continued efforts - and keep doing what YOU want to do!

YAttwood

That’s incredibly frustrating. I’ve watched your videos for years! I do have a question. Can you explain the process of preservation for Pope Francis? It was something I’ve never heard about.

Brenda

Honestly I’m so excited for this titanic book I’ve wanted you to cover more about the titanic since your video on it so many years ago

Jessica Ayala

God Bless you (weep emoji)

Caitlin Doughty

I am happy. I love working on this book. But I also love telling stories and am always seeking an outlet for that.

Caitlin Doughty

It's excited for you! It wants to meet you all!

Caitlin Doughty

Since you're not a fan of YouTube because of its practices and the way it keeps removing things, do you think you'd ever move to something like curiosity?

Gina Collura

Oh, and looking forward to seeing what happens in the future (including the book)

Graham O'Mara

I'm excited to see what you are working on.

Nichola Deas

Caitlin Poiroit??

Graham O'Mara

I want fewer videos, with a lower production value, that leaves the maker feeling satisfied & replenished by exploring their curiosities

Gil the Gilded Dragon

Caitlin, I am so excited for your book on the Titanic. I love your videos, but I also love your voice as an author. Do what you need to to be happy and I think/hope your fans will be accepting! It's always a joy to see something new from you, but we've also got to respect the needs/wants of the person behind it!

Joey Cooper

Can't WAIT for that Titanic Book, really looking forward to that!
