Okay, so, this episode was mostly fine. I think it suffered a bit from how much I really loved the S4 finale. Plus, I don't generally love when our high school characters graduate and go to college. It's generally too big of a tone shift for me. That said, it wasn't a bad episode.
Bonnie has been the summer continuing to lie to everyone (via texts sent from Jeremy) about the status of her aliveness. She refuses to tell anyone that she's dead because she doesn't want to ruin their good time.
Elena and Caroline move into the dorm at Whitmore (I think) College. They are shocked, however, to discover that they actually have a third roommate. Caroline is freaking out about this, concerned about how they'll be vampires in such close proximity to a stranger. She decides to force her to move out by drinking all her water, only to find it's spiked with vervain. So, at the very least, she knows vampires exist, even is she doesn't know about the two of them.
Caroline wants to lock her up until the vervain is out of her system and then compel her to forget, but Elena convinces her that the best thing to do, is just be normal college kids. So, they try to go to a party on campus, but they can't get through the door (no one invited them in). Then, the roommate calls Elena begging for help as someone is chasing her. She then falls to the ground dead in front of them with obvious vampire bites to her neck.
However, the police tell Elena and Caroline that she killed herself. They know because she left a note. So it seems the cops here know about vampires as well and are covering it up. Are we back to our S1 animal attacks? Even weirder they stole the roommate's phone and Elena found picture of her with her (Elena's) dad on it. Odd.
Back in Mystic Falls, Jeremy is preparing to go back to school after having been dead. He tells everyone that he faked his own death for attention. Sure. Why not. However, kids immediately start bullying him, so he beats the shit out of them and gets suspended. But, when the school calls, it's Katherine who answers the phone and gets the message.
Yup. Katherine is here. Human, weak, and vulnerable. She has no idea what to do or where to go, and begs Damon to help her. He offers to make her a vampire again, but she declines since she has no idea how it would react after having taken the cure.
Silas (as Stefan) has shown back up. When Jeremy runs into him, he knows he's Silas but as a bit of a time explaining it to Damon. However, Bonnie is with them (in ghost form) and realizes that her death broke the spell and brought Silas back. So, Jeremy convinces him and they head over to the Boarding House.
Already there, Silas tries to kill Katherine in the bathtub, but thankfully, she's shaving her legs with a straight razor (so bizarre) and slices him with it. It throughs him off long enough to get away. Downstairs, Damon stalls him while Katherine and Jeremy flee.
However, Silas explains the whole situation around him having Stefan drowning in a safe, and tells Damon he'll tell him where he is if he gives him Katherine and Jeremy. So, Damon calls and tells them to come back. Katherine is having no part of it and crashes the car. When they don't show back up, Damon get worried and goes looking for them. He finds Jeremy almost dead in the middle of the road. He gives him some blood to save him, but Katherine is MIA.
At the end of the summer party, Silas shows up and addresses the crowd. He proves that he can mind control everyone at once. And after slitting Bonnie's dad's throat, he tells the crowd that he needs them to find Katherine and bring her to him.
Okay. At this point, Bonnie HAS to tell someone (or let Jeremy) that she's dead. They need to know that Silas is back. At some point, some of these death are gonna be on her hands.
Oh, and Matt has been possessed, or something. I don't know. But he got the demon eyes you get on TV. 🤷♀️
