NEW DOCUMENTARY: The Civil War Submarine Missing for 136 Years

Hey folks,

Were you starting to think we'd never make a full-length documentary again? Well you're not alone–some days I thought that, too. But the siren song of just the right topic got the whole darn team back together.

I don't even remember when I first heard about the HL Hunley submarine (a good bet would be an interesting aside, deep in some academic's paper on Titanic). But I do remember my increasingly frantic reaction–– "a submarine....from the Civil War? Lit by candelight? Killed THREE of her crews? They found their bodies perfectly placed in the submarine 136 years later? Why have I never heard about this?!?" As it turns out, a lot of people haven't heard about the Hunley.

Fortunately her caretakers in South Carolina and the maritime archeologist Nick DeLong from Clemson University gave us fantastic access and help to make this documentary its best self.

Just because I'm working on the Titanic book, doesn't mean that EVERY video from now on will be a maritime-death-deep water-hubris-corpse recovery-horror show. But what can I say, the heart wants what it wants at this moment in time. Following my dreams. Even if they are sort of like nightmares.

I hope you enjoy this video, we're extremely proud of it,

Caitlin

This is soooo fascinating. I've been following you from 2016... the video quality is impeccable. I have always enjoyed the vids but they look so professional now. beautiful. Thank you for all of your hard work helping people address death, ponder death, and helping people find meaning in death. The way you talk about death changed my life. I own all of your books and will always support you in any way I possibly can 💚

Finally got to sit down and watch this and I admit your question at the end stumped me, partially because I don't know what it is to be well-known historically in this context. For instance in general I know that there were a lot of war-related technology advances during and because of the Civil War, but overall that's not my cup of tea, so I couldn't tell you the specifics of any of them. I think the Hunley should be discussed both in terms of its technology and its socio-political context, but I don't know what it means to make it "better known". It's not like I can tell you any of the other submarine forerunners either. But great video as usual!
